Jr. Boys Place Second in E.P Q , District Runners-Up--from left to right are bottom row--Ricky Stanley, Jackie Billingsley, Doug Autrey, Tom Beavers, J. B. Taylor. Top row--Roy McDan- iel, Bobby Joe Steward, Doug Autrey, Rodney Lacewell, Larry Burns, Jim Webb, Donnie Morris, Gary Burris, and Manuel Martinez. Also on the team but not in the picture is Ray Valerio. .C. Tournament The Jr. High Boys took second in EPAC softball tournament play after dropping a tough 10-inning game to San Jon, 5-4. At the end of 6 innings of play the score stood at 6-all. The game then went into extra innings with Roy McDaniel in there pitching a whale of a game. This is how it stayed up until the 10th, when San Jon managed to push in a run on an error to take home the trophy, The boys had previously beaten Dora, 15-3g and Elida, 14-3 in the tournament. They ended the season with a 6-3 record. Larry Burns catches one that Roy McDaniel threw down the grove Jim Webb comes into third with the crowd roaring, for another called strike against the slugger from Dora. Mr, C. B. This was an anxious moment for the team and spectators. Girls Eliminate Rivalsg Take Second in Tourney With the fine pitching of Sue Starbuck, a powerful hitting attack, and g ood field ing , the Texico Whirlwinds took s e c o n d in the District Softball Tournament. They won a victory for themselves when they beat one of the best teams in the district, the Grady Broncos, with a close score of 7-6, in their first game of the tournament. ln the second game of the tournament, the Whirl- winds were beaten by the Melrose Buffaloes, 10-6. Sue Starbuck comes to home base for another point. l Vivian Duncan tags up a little late to put out Kathy Frazier at third base. Millie Autrey slides in to third base safely. 65

Jr. High Girls Talk about ball playing! That's precisely what those Jr. High girls did this season, Sweeping the tournament series in two straight with scores of 12-5 and 14-13, en- abled them to emerge district champs. The House girls were ahead 4 points until the final inning when the Texico team pushed across 5 runs to win the trophy. The girls had previously beaten the Grady Broncos 12-5 in the first game of the series. Frankie Lambert, backed by good fielding, turned in a good season of pitching by leading her team to 7 straight victories against no losses and to a district cham- pionship. Tula Ortiz gets all set to catch a ball coming down the third base line to tag out the runner coming into third, Emerge District Champions Vi There's a man behind every woman and Coach Stockton happens to be the man behind these girls. He is giving them some helpful hints on how to win a championship. The girls gathered around him are the girls on his champion- ship team, ,. si ' 5 Monnie Sanford gets ready to catch the strike coming over home plate, while Coach Green gets ready to call it. 67
