After meeting their dead line, they started the sale of annuals by presenting The 564,000 Question showin assembly, as a re- sult of which, more annuals were sold than ever be - fore. The staff photographer spent many a moment snapping action shots to enliven the annual. Therefore the typical teen-ager, not so much for what they are, but for what they stand, has been chosen by the staff as its theme of the 1956 Tiger. The scene portrayed on each di- vision sheet illustrates one phase of the many teen-age activities at Texas Senior High, 1 9 V 4.4 'x 6 A L A w fy, r ,, 4 fi Q4 , is dxf r' 'af at .ww 1 'L Q r sv' W Q lg V, ww? ADMINISTRATION For the teenager to receive the greatest benefit from his school life there must exist a cooperative and understand- ing relationship between him and the ad- rninistration. The Board of Education, superinten- dent, principal, and faculty have exhibited a sincere interest in the welfare of our students. Through their maturity and wide ex- periences, their genuine love for their profession and their students, as well as through their wise instruction, the ad- ministration have proved their value in leading and guiding the typical teen-ager. 11 199 MR AUBREY WOOD V1ce Presxdent MR BURNI-IAM .TONE S fn-Af MR T A BAIN Pres1der1t BOARD OF EDUCATION OF TEENAGERS The members of the Texarkana Texas School Board play an unportant part 1n the everyday 11fe of the typ1cal teenager w1thout h1s be1ng aware of lt The1rs 15 the knowledge and exper1ence wh1chu.nobtrus1ve1y gu1des and moulds our 11ves and somet1mes even our des t1n1es On th1S page the staff of the 1956 T1ger teenagers themselves pay tr1bute to those who have so l11'lS61flSh1Y contrxbuted to the educatwn and progress of the typ1ca1 teen ager MR W R KELLY Secretary MR JOHN HALTOM MR HALE PARKER 12 MR BILL WILLIAMS caumss nesrmv y R we I e-el I R ' SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE IS HUB OF SCHOOL'S PROGRESS ar- -fl ---x f4: 7 b'---- MRS VIRGINIA LYNCH Sec reta ry AT uv 'Z' MRS ELIZABETH TAPP Secretary and Regrstrar MR DALE HOWARD Supermtendent of Pub11c Schools t Mr Dale Howard the new supermtendent of the Texas Publ1c Schools can be found 1n h1s off1ce at the h1gh school busy w1th the ever mcreasmg problems of a growmg school system He 1S always co oper last year as Assoc1ate Supermtendent and succeeded to h1s present posxtron on the res1gnat1on of Dr H W St1lwell 1n July All of the aCt1V1t1CS of our h1gh school stem from th1soff1ce The combmed efforts of Mr Howard Mrs Tapp and Mrs Lynch go 1nto the plans and success of our many aCt1V1t1eS ,rgsi 13 f af Q Y A , MQ Zi, an ,, 7 A A A ly, I I jf . 1 . , 1 ative and eager to help the teenager. Those who were elected feel as honored in being favored as the class does in choosing them. The runners-up also hold renowned places in the class. The undefeated Owls displayed awesome power in rolling over the Tigers into the State finals. Tiger dreams were shattered by a rash of bad breaks early in the game. When the Tigers finally got started, the damage had already been done. The only Tiger touchdovm in the first half was called back, and the Tigers could not make a score that counted until the fourth quarter. But when the Tigers started, they rolled to three touchdowns. The first one came on a 45-yard screen pass from McKinney to Erie, after the Tigers had rolled 80 yards in eleven plays. McKinney carried over from the four, clirnaxing a 47-yard drive. Only seconds later Mc Kinney scored the final Tiger TD, and the game ended 44-18. The Tiger defensive unit, led by Petty, Rhoden, and Vann, played a whale of a game as the Tigers won their first playoff game since 1952. The Tigers tallied twice within 3 minutes of the second quarter. Danny Petty smashed over from the 4 for the first Tiger touchdown. Then Erie made his spectacular 90-yard run. Fowler booted the point to make it 13-0 at halftime. After an error-filled 3rd quarter, the Tigers finally started clicking again late in the game. They marched 43 yards for their final counter. Adding to the gloom was the fact that the Tigers must face the powerful Temple Eagles in their opening game. In a game characterized by staunch defensive play the Tigers proved that they were a team to be reckoned with. The game was scoreless going into the final quarter. Midway through the quarter the Tigers scored with McKinney going over from the 2-foot line. The Tiger lead looked safe until Temple struck back on a quick 62-yard pass play, knot- ting the score at 6-6, and forcing the Tigers to settle for a tie. Little Rock gained a 14-13 lead in the 3rd quarter, but the Tigers came from behind on a magnificent 66-yard pass play from McKinney to Erie to take a 19-14 lead. Fowler iced the game for the Tigers with only 1 minute 5 seconds left, scoring from the 6. TIGERS 39 - DENISON 6 Despite the absence of many local fans due to a flood at Clarksville, the Tigers pounded the Denison Yellow- jackets 39-6. Only once before, in 1952, had the Tigers gone so far in the State playoffs. The final season record of 8 wins, Z losses, and Z ties compared favorably with any other pre- vious Tiger record. For the fifth time in the past nine years, the Tigers won their district championship with a 3-1-1 conference slate, They went on to capture the Bi-District Championship and were finally defeated in the semi-finals. 1955 was one ofthe finestyears in THS football history. BASKETBALL TEAM COMPILES FINE RECORD Typical scene in the Tiger Gym SEASON 1955-56 was also a banner year in basketball at Texas High School. The Tigers copped Second Place in the district and compiled a very fine record of 15 wins and 4 losses through the season. Rex Ray captured District 4-AAA scoring honors with 191 points in ten games. Texarkana also produced the district's second highest scorer--Red Tallant--with 175 points. Jerry King took sixth place with 114 points. For the complete season, Ray scored 356 points, Tallant, 2959 King, 2135 Springer, 95, and Johns, 91. Because the football season ended later than usual, the Tigers did not swing into action until the later part of December, The first game was actually played before football season was over, the Tigers defeating Hooks 38-30, The Tigers were defeated ol-5o by Mount Pleasant in the first game in which the full tearii participated. They downed Mount Pleasant 53-47, and then went on to post victories over Byrd High and DeKalb, before DeKalb gained their revenge by beating the Tigers 63-59. ln the city championship game the Bengals outpointed the Arkansas High Razorbacks 48-45. After defeating Byrd High again, the Tigers swung into con- ference play with a 59-46 victory over Lufkin. fxfarshall took advantage of their home court to hand the T1- gers their first conference setback, 57-51. The following week the Bengals showed their anger by crushing the Nacogdoches Dragons 77-42, King leading the way with 26 points. The Tigers returned home to post an important 61-53 win over the 1.or:gview1.obos. They then pinned defeats on Kilgore, 63- 42, and Lufkin, 55-45. ln the showdown battle at Tiger Gym for the, district crown, the Tigers just could not cope with the superior heighth of the Marshall Ixfavs. and the visitors went home with the all-im- portant victory, 51-47, during the 1955-56 basketball Season. SUMMARY 112 But the Tigers kept their hopes alive the following week as Red Tallant paced the Tigers to a 56-48 victory over Long- view. Rex Ray and Red Tallant led the way with 28 points each as the Tigers buried Kilgore under an 84-53 attack.
