Some students are entering college for the first time while others are returning from summer school. Still others are returning from work and vacations. Septem- ber and October bring much activity centered primarily around football. Football is where the action is those first few months at A 84 I. At football games, we thrill to the band, twirlers and cheerleaders. Homecoming and Parents Day provide added excitement. These are the things that make September and October great. There's new classes, teachers, and schedules to get used to. Slowly but surely, we ease into the new semester. These months are cold and many times we donit feel like going to class in the morning. But we have to realize that the main purpose of our being here at A8LI is to get an education. But what would college be like without all the activities to round out our studies? There are basketball games to attend, and of course, parties. Aren't January and February great? if ,, Q. 1' Au , -'I V F f I- -nf! There are elections for Miss Texas A8LI as well as for cheer- leaders and the Students Association. We were fortunate that the Ethnic Studies Cen- ter presented several entertaining pro- grams. The Texas A8cI University Singers were also busy during these monthsg they presented some programs. The T-fights also added excitement to these months and of course there was our yearly visitation by "the birds". However, the most important event in ASLI history fat least that's how the students feelj came in late March with the opening of the Pub which was later named "La Cantina Javalina". With the half ending in a 7-7 deadlock, the Hogs began to build up their lead when Hughie Shaw broke loose for a 47 yard run to the 4 yard line. Stroman scored when he hit the end zone on an option keep. Joe Henke intercepted a Tiger pass which lead to the last score of the night for the Hogs. The Tigers did not give up without a fight, on a Seal-Black combination, the Tigers pulled their score within 8 points of the Hogs. The extra point was no good and the Javelinas ended their first game of the season with a 21-13 win. "Fourth quarter's ours." 1 ji. 'Er . f.. ,. .. if fans.. . Hogs Whip Tigers The second game of the season was at Javelina Stadium to the delight of the Hoggie fans. The game ended with the scoreboard reading 35-14. Two of the 'Hoggie TD's were acquired on the Stro- man and Starks combinations. Stro- man proved that he could pass, Starks proved that he truly has great hands. The other score came once again from Stroman when he scampered 15 yards for a TD on an option keep. Hughie Shaw also got in on the action when he broke through the Tiger line for a 49- yard run. Stroman scored the last TD from 13 yards out. The 21-point victo- ry was sweet for the Javelinas since the Oklahoma team was suppose to had been a big threat. Collins had 186 yards in 22 carries averaging a little over 8 yards per carry. The Hogs came through again after a few serious threats by the Tigers. One occurred following an A8tl fumble which the Tigers recovered and moved to the 5-yard line, the other was after another fumble which the Tigers moved to the 1 and into what they thought was the goal line. But the officials called it back saying it was stopped at the one. The scores were divided between the halves with Collins making the first score of the game. Stroman added the next score from 2 yards out. The second half had Stroman scoring once again on a 5-yard option keep. Hughie Shaw added the last score with a 2-yard run into the end zone. This victory was No. 42 for the Javelina winning streak. 224 25-25 Tie Breaks It Up With the end score of this game being a 25-25 deadlock, ACU halt- ed the mighty Javelinas winning streak. The Hogs still hold a 43 game undefeated streak. Nothing is to be taken away from ACU, but the Javelinas gave the crowd one of the greatest comebacks in histo- ry by scoring 25 points in less than seven minutes to hold on to their undefeated record. The Hogs were down O-25 until late in the third quarter. Then as only a Javelina could they came back with three touchdowns and a field goal to tie up the game. Two of the TD's came on a Starks-Stroman combination. Hughie Shaw had a 4-yard run for the last six points. Robbie Spencer added the field goal. Time just wasn't on the side of the Hogs, with a few more minutes, who knows? Dr. Doom wants this game. 3 Still on home ground the Javelinas smashed the Lumberjacks 36-8. Hughie Shaw made the first score on a two-yard run. Shaw who was still suffering from a bruised shoulder, but he had a remark- able game, with 103 yards in 13 carries. For the second score Larry Collins plunged into the end-zone from one yard out. Stroman reinjured his shoulder in the second quarter which gave Harts- field a chance to show what he could do. Hartsfield hit Franks for the third score of the night on a ten yard pass with 36 seconds left in that quarter. Another QB got to see action also, Darrel Jackson set up a TD with Davis making the final TD. The first score was a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Hogs scored once again after an 80-yard drive with Elvis Hartsfield taking in the score from 17 yards out. The Hogs were down by three points at one time, but came back with a TD by Hughie Shaw from 59 yards out. The third score came after a 13-yard drive when Hartsfield took it in once again. The score was 21-10 and in the third quarter Larry Collins gave us an examppe of his lightening quick speed and ran 62 yards for the score. The ex- tra point was good. The last score of the game for the Hogs came on a Hartsfield to Franks combination. Collins moved 168 yards in 16 carries Homecoming Fans Treated To Good Show The Javelinas really gave the Homecoming fans a treat on Oct. 29 by just playing good football and running all over Angelo State. lt was just the night of the Hog. Lightening quick Col- lins broke the conference career rushing mark, Hartsfield and Starks put together a crowd pleasing show when Starks pulled down a 33- yard pass. The Border Bandits should be given a lot of credit also, Dr. Doom set up the second TD when he hit the Ram QB, who had to give up the football or his head. The Bear calls that tackle, "the Royal Crown." Rodriguez recovered the fumble. Greene recovered another one when the Rams fumbled at their 34. This was the night of the Hog and they proved it with a score of 35- 7. The Border Bandits did it again. 22 226 The JaveIina's Non-Losin Streak Ends East Texas Was Ready For The Javelinas Almost four years after it began, A8tl's non-losing streak came to an end on Nov. 5 in the town of Commerce, Texas. The lost left the Javelinas two games short of the all-time national college record of 48 games without a loss. The only East Texas score came after Rogers sprinted half the field after catching a 79-yard pass. The Hogs had trouble all night trying to score. Their only score came in the second quar- ter on an 80-yard pass from Hartsfield to Starks. The snap for the extra point was fumbled around until Starks had to pass it into the end-zone only to be batted down by an ETSU defender. Field goals were tried, but they also failed later in the game. The chances to score were there, but the Hogs just did not use them. The final score was 6-7. Collins moves for a few more yards. The Hogs Removed The Stinger From The Yellowjackets Starks does it again. In this game against HPU, Starks sets two records and tied one. Starks caught eight passes for 196 yards and two TD's. This surpassed the school and conference yardage records and tied the ca- reer record for TD catches. Several changes were made in the Javelina line up, some for injuries and others for just reasons. The oth- er scores came from Hartsfield on a five- yard run. Hartsfield was later replaced by freshman QB Darrel Jackson, and he ran the show until the end of the game. Jackson took one TD in on his own and Starks helped him out on a later one. The Yellow jackets thought they were going to make a quick comeback on the last play of the game, but Steve Fefer put a stop to that on the A8tl 30. The Hogs then trav- eled to the West Coast to capture 3rd place in the Malibu Classic. The Hogs lost to Loyola Marymount, and beat UT in Arlington for the 3rd place honors. Bobby Kinzer was named to the All-Tournament team. The Hogs also lost a close one to Cal State during their stay in Califor- ma. Their next game was against Tex- as Lutheran in Seguin. Then the Hogs hosted the Mighty Pan Am Broncos here in the Gil Steinke Cen- ter. 239 240 Hogs Lose Home Games By A Hair ln the Lone Star opener for A8tl, the Hogs lost to Howard Payne in Brownwood. The Hogs played a good first half, but then HPU built up a large lead and held it for the entire game. After traveling to Commerce the next day the Javelinas lost to East Texas 82-72. The coaches approve of whats going on. The Hoggies returned home to host the ACU Wildcats. Even though the Wildcats won this encounter, the Hogs gave them a good game and really began to look like a good team, only to come back the next Monday night and play one of their worse games all season losing to Angelo State, 60-64. K7 95' N ACU Gets To Feel The Heat Of The Hoggie Hoopsters Javelinas Began Their 5-Game Homestand In Style The Javelinas began their 5 game homestand with a good show by up- setting the SFA Lumberjacks. The SFA game was very close. Two free throws in the last five seconds sunk by Fred Stephenson sewed up the Javelina win for the night. The Hogs Are Fired Up! Frank shoots over a Lumberjack. 24 242 Hogs Continue Winning Streak The Hogs have kept the fans hap- py by continuing their winning streak at home. After beating Sam Houston 83-80 Monday night they came back a few days later to pull probably one of the biggest upsets in the LSC. The Hogs beat East Texas 71-64 in a very heated game. Like everything good, the Hogs winning streak came to an end when No. 1 rated Howard Payne sneaked by the Hogs 66-61. The Javelinas In LSC Tourney The Hogs ended their season on the road winning two of their last three games. In their first appearance ever in the LSC Cham- pionship Tourney, they made a reasonable show- ing. Abilene Christian was the first victim of the Hogs. Later that night the Hogs lost a close one to Howard Payne. They had a good first half, but the score at the end was in favor of HPU by ten points. A8tl had three players selected for the All-LSC team. James Johnson was chosen to the first team and Bobby Kinzer and Eric Staten were selected to the second team. Womens' Track Team Coach Livia Diaz and the women tracksters had an eight-meet schedule this year beginning with the Javelina Relays in February. Coach Diaz was impressed with the number on the team this year after having only four people run last year. Nine of the ladies that represented A8tl in track and field this year lettered.
