-1984 Aggieland Each year a staff of approximately 20 students works year round to produce the largest college yearbook in the na¬ tion — the Aggieland yearbook, an Ag¬ gie tradition. The first annual, called “Olio,” was published by the Corps of Cadets in 1895. The name was Italian for “hash.” The annual had 133 pages and wasn’t much larger than a “Reader’s Digest.” The second volume of the yearbook 1949 Aggieland didn’t come out until 1903. The name was now the “Long Horn.” In 1913, the editors changed the name of the book to one word, the “Longhorn.” World War I came, deeply affecting the cadets who put out the yearbook. In the opening of the 1920 yearbook, the editor included a Gold Star section dedicated to the 51 A. and M. students who died in WWI. War also dominat¬ ed the yearbooks of the ’40’s. The Long¬ horn in 1944 fea¬ tured an allied coun¬ try on each division page. The next year¬ book, Volume 43, wasn’t published until 1946. Accord¬ ing to the editor, the lapse was “due to the difficulties encountered in procur¬ ing the materials necessary for publica¬ tion.” Volume 44 was also published as the 1946 Longhorn, but the cover had the Aggie shield with a 1947 on it. Most of the confusion came from the Aggies returning from World War II. In 1949, the student body voted to change the name of the yearbook to the “Aggieland.” The first edition of the Aggieland was a gray color and fea¬ tured the Aggie ring in gold. Since then, the Aggieland has grown to 848 pages and a subscription rate of 28,000 students. We hope that the 1984 Aggieland will be an accurate record of life at Texas A M.
