I Listen up, Ags! Well, Rock was a tad distressed at all this change. What had happened to the good ol’ Ags, he barked out. He cursed the two-percenters, or t-sips, or coogs, or whatever it was that had in¬ vaded AGGIELAND. Suddenly out of the maroon came a booming, HOWDY.” A young man reached out his hand and asked, Sir, do you need some assistance?” Rock took kindly to this well-dressed lad. Rock told him how he fought in WWI and WWII: Wherever in the world I have been, I knew who the Aggies were. You could always tell by their Aggie rings, all right, but you didn’t have to — they had the spirit. Something at Texas A M instills it in them.” The young man listened, he understood what the old man said; he had felt the spirit. The old man asked about those that shunned the Aggie traditions: What was wrong with these people, and what were these groups that they joined?” Rest Army The young man tried to explain: The unity that held A M together in ’37, the common enemies the Aggies bonded together to fight against, do not exist today. For some, the spirit is not strong enough to hold them. They tend to splinter off and support their own groups. But it is the University — the overall University — that counts, that is where the spirit is, that is what makes the spirit strong. Rock and the young man arrived at Kyle Field. The Twelfth Man, 35,000 strong stood in support of the football team — two percenters, long hairs, greeks, non-regs and cadets alike. A big smile came over Rock’s face. The roar of Farmer’s Fight” echoed throughout Kyle Field. Rock looked at the overflowing stadium and turning to the Heavens said, Outside of things growing, and I guess all living things must, most all that I’ve seen has been good.” The referee tossed the coin. The Aggies won the toss. The Twelfth Man stood at attention as the Texas Aggie Band began to play The Spirit of Aggieland.” 6
