The annual Battalion Award program was instituted in 1947 by the student daily newspaper of A M to recognize meritorious achievement on the part of members of the faculty and staff of the college system. Honorees are selected by a student committee which includes the co-editors of the paper and certain departmental editors. Lt. Col. Marion P. Bowden, tactical officer in the Office of the Commandant, for his outstanding work as dormitory tactical officer, in which he has proved that discipline can be tempered with understanding. Dr. John H. Hill, associate professor in the Department of History, scholar and teacher, who maintains the highest class room standards and the highest class room respect and interest as well. Dr. T. F. Mayo, head of the Department of English, for a third of a century of making A M ' s a broader education by injecting, in a variety of different ways, much of the arts and letters so essential to a well rounded life. J. S. Mogford, professor in the Department of Agronomy, for his work in origi¬ nating and building the Cotton Ball, Pageant, and Style Show. J. Wayne Stark, director of the Memorial Student Center, for his consistently conscientious work and his visionary planning on the Memorial Student Center. 1949 AWARDS Dr. J. P.
