Dedication The 1984-85 Nocatula staff is proud to dedicate this yearbook, as a welcome into office, to President James Cheek and his family. James E. Cheek II, Sixteenth President of Tennessee Wesleyan College, succeeds George E. Naff, Jr., who retired from the position on June 30th, 1984, after serving for 9 years. Dr. Cheek had been serving as Vice-President for Institutional Advancement at Tennessee Wesleyan College. A native of Rossville, Georgia, he took his B.A. in English while an undergraduate at Emory and Henry College. He taught English at Brentsville District High School in Nokesville, Va., between 1962-65. President Cheek joined the faulty of Hiwasse College in 1965, where he spent eleven years as English instructor and coach. During his tenure, he was selected three times as Teacher of the Year by the student body. Dr. Cheek took his Master of Arts in Teaching in English from the University of Chattanooga in 1967. He has completed his work for the Ph.D. in English at Florida State University and has done further graduate study at the University of Virginia, East Tennessee State University and The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He is a graduate of the College Management Program of Carnegie-Mellon University. In 1983, he received the honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Lin- coln Memorial University. After joining the faculty of Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1976 as associate professor of English and a Chairman of the Department, Dr. Cheek has served in various capacities including assistant to the President, Dean of Student Services, Director of Admissions, Director of Development, and Vice-President for Institutional Advancement. James E. Cheek II is married to the former Rosemary Dickson of Chattanooga. Mrs. Cheek is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and is active in community and church affairs. Dr. and Mrs. Cheek have 4 children, James E. Ill (Trippe), Caroline, John Christopher, (Chris) and Rachel Dickson.
