PROLOGUE When the last hot breath of summer Ceased to stir, We returned to the citadel of Tennessee Wesleyan. Entering once more the ritual and pattern of collegiate life. Old rendezvous revisited — cronies, colleagues — new faces — A subtle change is evident, an aura of transition. Progress is the motif. The interminable slowness of endless lines — This is registration An hour ' s twitching pencil ' s labor swept away by an advisor ' s dissenting nod — This is Registration Blank staring faces emerge, Clutching class cards, wondering . . . . . . did I really sign away a pint of blood? This is registration . . . m 1 Freshmen! confused, inhibited, neurotic, New products of pubhc education- hiding heads in fear of air invasion; transformed into: confused, sophisticated, neurotic, collegians. Mr. B ' s beammg smile, the pulsation of the walls as the Wurhtzer blazes at 120 decibels — Slap, slap, riffle, slap, bid a heart and the floating bridge game goes ever onward. The euphonous din of classmates: bantering, cajoling, reflecting. Calloused elbows — Struggling for position — Craning — Straining — Bargain day at the book store? No — the daily 10 o ' clock mass compulsion to compress 500 bodies into the confines of the post office. Again we relive these reminiscences at our rollicking recluse.
