COE A. B., M. A. Dean of Students D James L. Robb To the Members of the Class of 1950 Greetings; From a number of standpoints this is no ordinary year and the class of which you are a member is no ordinary class. It is not the largest class to graduate from Tennessee Wesleyan, but my impression is that it is one of the best. As I have observed from my ivory tower the comings and goings of the members of the class I have come to admire each of you and to believe that each has a real contribution to make to the life of the nation. May I suggest here what I have proposed to a number of you in person, that in order to achieve your goals you may need to assume a hard boiled attitude toward yourself at times. Most of us are apt to be too easy with ourselves. It is all right to be easy on others but not on ourselves. My prayer is that God ' s blessing may be upon each of you and that with his aid you will achieve the full measure of your strength. May your life be rich in service to God and to your fellow man. Once elected, he appoints his staff and begins the long and difficult task of publishing a school annual. The annual publi- cation must be printed on time and the publi- cation completed before the end of the school year; this can be done only by a competent editor and the cooperation of both staff and student body. It is not a one-man job. There is also a scholarship of a certain amount given to the editor elect for handling this position. The annual is what the student body makes it. The staff is composed of: Editor — Dick Gill- ert; Asst, Editor — Vic Sparks; Sponsor — E, G. Rogers; Business Mgrs. — Barbara Coleman, Pearl Hamilton; Photo Editor — Nancy Bailey; Art Editor — Marilyn Hunt; Typing Editor — Marion McCamy; Social Editor — Mildred Kelley; Sports Editor — Don White. THE BULLDOG STAFF Deadline — September 20. That ' s the an- nouncement the Editor greeted the 1949-50 staff with, and to that same effect each staff member receives (with a groan) a card about once a month announcing another deadline. Then there is a rush to collect ads, take pic- tures, write and type articles, and lay out a dummy copy. Yes, it ' s work, but fun too! Left to Right: Sponsor — A. H. Myers, Editor — Pat Hick- man, Asst. Editor — Joyce McCulley, Bus. Manager — Barbara Coleman. RELIGION IS A WAY OF LIFE AT TENNESSEE WESLEYAN In accord with the purpose of the College, the Campus religious program is both full and enriching for all who participate. The Wednesday morning Chapel Service in the auditorium is dedicated exclusively to Christian worship under the direction of the College Chaplain. The churches of the city welcome the students of the College in a cordial manner and invite participation in all of their activities and services. Heading the Religious Activities is the Religious Council. This group is composed of the student officers of the various campus religious organi- zations, their sponsors and a faculty representative. The Life Service Volunteers is a fellowship of the students who are planning full-time Christian service as their vocation. The Wesleyan Fellowship is comp osed entirely of girls. It is formed principally for those interested in the world missionary program of the Methodist Church. THE RELIGIOUS COUNCIL Miss Martin, Miss Perkins, A. H. Phi Theata Kappa, the National Junior College Honor Society, which is open to those obtaining scholastic achievements, is one of the most active on the campus. The 129 cast of Delta Psi Omega, the honorary dramatic organization at T.W.C., is self supporting and produces at least three major productions dur- ing the school year. A Chapter of the National Junior College Debating Fraternity, Phi Rho Pi, is also established on the campus. It furnishes a wonderful opportunity for students interested in debating to exercise their powers of oration. THE PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL The Pan - Hellenic Council functions as the coordinating agency for the fraternal organ- izations of the College. Its membership consists of the presidents of each fraternity and sorority, their sponsors, and two faculty representatives appointed by the President of the College. The Dean of Stu- dents serves as coordinator of the Pan-Hellenic program. During the past year the Council sponsored a very suc- cessful barn party as part of orientation week. It also is the hub from which many other of the social events on the campus radiate. Pan-Hellenic Council puts on a radio program and a chapel program for the student body. With these, the purposes of the organization are put forth, and an explanation of the func- tions of the Council and of the fraternal organizations are pre- sented. They have been led by capable officers and feel fortunate in having such good officer material for the coming year. The year started off with a bang when the Zetas received the beautiful loving cup from the National Headquarters of Zeta Mu Epsilon for having the most progressive and outstand- ing chapter in the National So- rority. The girls of course were very proud of this honor and are in hopes they will be able to keep the cup again this year. If a chapter wins the cup three years straight, it becomes theirs to keep. The Fall Quarter was of course taken up mostly with initiation of the new girls into the sorority, and much fun was had by all. Also during the Fall Quarter there was the contest sponsored by Coach Hudson for the sorority or fraternity doing the best job of advertising for the football games. The Zetas were picked the lucky winners and received the prize of ten dollars. On the last day of the Fall Quarter the Zetas entertained the football team in the Rec Hall with a chili party and af- terwards played folk games. Everyone ate until he could eat no more. The Zeta Alumni Conven- tion was held on a week-end early last fall and the active members enjoyed meeting the former students and being with them. The two big events of the year are yet to come for the Zetas this year — the annual party and the chaoel proaram. The partv will be a St. Patrick ' s Day affair and we hooe it will be as successful as the parties given bv the other fraternities and sororities. All in all, it has been a good year for the Zetas and it will be with much regret that the Seniors will turn the active Chapter over to the Juniors, but they will have the consola- tion that they are leaving things in very capable hands. A new co-sponsor, Miss Betty Perkins, and a new patroness. Miss Jean Martin, are welcomed addi- tions. Rush week found the Kappas playing hostess at a hayride, a bowling party, and an old southern banquet. What fun! Katherine Mason is the newly elected Sweetheart of Eta iota Tau Fraternity. Also Mary A. Dennis is Sweetheart of Theta Sigma Chi. We are proud of Mary Alice ' s position as vice president of the Senior Class and of Margaret Beck- ett ' s place as secretary. Anne Bogart is girl representative and Virginia Martin is treas- urer of the Junior Class. Homecoming week- end brought old friends back; first prize to the Kappa float in the parade; and honorable mention for football game advertise- ment. The Queen ' s car carried two Kappas as royalty, Betty Inman as football queen, and Kather- ine Mason as senior attendant. Our party, The Kappa Kruise, was a big success. It left us a bit sea-sick but so relieved. Initiation was a riot with those Kappa box-houses. We were so tired that it was diffi- cult to tell who initiated whom. Our chapel program took us over an enjoyable tour of the United States on the train El- Kappa-Tan. Bernola Melborn deserves art work credit. The Barrets of Wimpole Street starred Barbara Griffin with Mary Alice Dennis and Norma Picard in minor roles. The alumni banquet was sort of a grand finale for the 1950 Kappas. It was good to see our old friends. We seniors will soon be alumnae ourselves and we wish the ne w members much success. The time has come for us to close our diary on another year. We feel that we have accom- plished a great deal for Kappa. The fact that our president Helen Hinds was chosen Miss T.W.C. is final evidence of Kappa Delta Phi ' s character. We all looked for- ward with anticipation to another good Gamma year. Our first outing was a hamburger fry, with the Gammas and their dates. We began at once with preparations for our big party of the year. We had a formal Harvest Moon Festival, Oc- tober 29th which was a huge success. We were glad to see so many of our old girls back, Rushing came November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th; our parties consisted of a scavenger hunt and chili supper at the home of alumna Roxie Smith; a hayride to the drive-in where we ate plenty of food while we watched a good movie. A Kid party at the home of Dean Ri- viere. Our rush parties netted us a fine group of pledges. In no time at all Christmas had rolled around! The Christ- mas spirit was strong in our Gamma Hearts, and we shared our material blessings in the form of a huge basket of food- stuffs with an elderly and very needy little lady. We had our Christmas party in which we exchanged gifts and had loads of fun being together. After Christmas vacation we came back to school full of ideas for mock initiation. We had our initiation on the cam- pus and in town, which proved to be very successful. This wss loads of fun, or at least we old Gammas thought so. Then came our beautiful formal initiation ritual, and the candlelight of secret ceremony created an indelible picture that will remain long after our days at Wesleyan are over. On February 24th we gave our Chapel Program, a take-off on Romeo and Juliet, which was humerous and educational. Plans are now underway for our big spring banquet, and then graduation. Several of our girls have re- ceived honors this year: our President Lois Robeson was voted the qirl with the best per- sonality; Vice President, Launa Sutherland was chosen Senior beauty; and Mildred Kelley, se- lected for the best dressed. The Queen of the fraternity was presented who was no other than Miss Katherine Ma- son of Chilhowee, Virginia, a senior here at college and a member of the Kappa Delta Phi sorority. The dance was made a success only through the co- operation of the members and the backing of the student body and the presence of our lovely Queen. Rush week wqs a hectic one as usual, but everything went off fine for the Hits. They were pledged and are now members, some of T.W.C ' s finest in quality and quantity. Let it be known that the Hits are always there on top. Mr. Jack Housts, our spon- sor, is an asset to the frater- nity. He has put plenty of time and work into the organization. He has assisted in our handling of financial affairs, and has given to us that needed coor- dination. Hats off to The pro- fessor of Musical Knowledge, A. J. Houts. REMINISCING In the spring of the year 1947, Dean Richmond as- sembled a group of Wesleyan- ites for the purpose of organ- izing a new fraternity. Their effort founded Theta Sigma Chi, Beta Chapter; accepted as a national organization in the summer of 1947, at the Na- tional College Pan- hellenic Council. Although we Chi ' s are a young organiza- tion, we have projected the fra- ternity into all campus activi- ties. Our record speaks for it- self. Socially: The largest single contingent in the Homecoming Parade — namely, (12) floats. The finest Pledge Banquet in Sigma Chi history. Our annual party was its traditional suc- cess. Scholastically: Amos Calli- han and Harry Norton are members of Phi Theta Kappa, plus a host of members who have made the Dean ' s List — Jack Pool, Tom Phillips, Don Wolford, Michael Passa, Amos Callihan, Edell Hearn, Harry Norton, and Julian Wilde. Civically: Our organization has produced the Vice-Presi- dent, Edell Hearn, of the stu- dent body who also assumed the President ' s office in the third quarter. Our Sweetheart who has been elected annually in all Chi Fraternities has been a tremendous asset to our organ- ization, and we take this time to express our thanks to Mary Alice Dennis. To our sponsor. Professor Fred H. Puett, who has shown a sincere interest in our lives as young men, we owe our deepest thanks. His effort is shown in the success of our fra- ternity today. With heavy hearts we rem- inisce upon the activities of another successful year for Theta Sigma Chi. Although life ' s paths will separate many of the brothers, our feeling of unity will always exist. PHI SIGMA NU ! It has been our purpose to serve to promote friendships and wholesome social activities on the Tennessee Wesleyan Campus. Only those students who have attained a high stan- dard of scholarship and charac- ter are accepted into the fra- ternity. To begin our list of activi- ties, we sponsored a hayride for the members of the frater- nity and their dates. Our even- ing was spent around a nice bonfire on the Mayfield farm. Everyone enjoyed this hayride and it gave each of us a chance to become better acquainted. Our next social activity was during Rush Week when the Phi Sigma Nu Fraternity held its annual Rush Week ban- quet at Norwood ' s Cafe. About fifty members and pledges were present at the banquet. Our toastmaster was the well- known Dr. Burton of Athens. Among our guests were Profes- sor E. E. Tebeau and Mr. Nor- man Nagel. We were honored with the presence of Mr. Clif- ford Cunningham of Athens, who was elected Grand Secre- tary of the National Organiza- tion. Our last social event of the season was the Carnival of Carnations. This was our annual Valentine dance. Carn- ations were given to the ladies at the door while members of the fraternity wore their fra- ternity flower, the yellow rose. The music for the dance was wire-recorded to give an even, blended array of music. The gym was decorated with the traditional Valentine colors of red and white with large red hearts covering the walls. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the King and Queen of Hearts. These two royalties were represented by none other than Louis Freyre and Alma Martin. During the year we selected a Dream Girl from the many beautiful lassies of the campus. The final decision rested on Miss Nancy Bailey who, in our opinion is certainly a Dream Girl. FEATURE S ' 5 One of the traditions of the school is the a of a King and Queen of Hearts. As they celebration of Valentine ' s Day, the heart theme has beeri chosen for their title. The persons elected are chosen for their good. personality, friendliness and probably most of all, popul Each year a week or so ahead of the annual Valent Day Party, nominations for candidates for the election are taken up in chapel. The three highest of boys a total nominations are placed on a ballot are then voted on and the winners are crowned at the formal Valentine ' s Day Party. This year the popular choice for the honor of King and Queen of Hearts were Louis Freyre an and Alma are both most representative tradition they stand for. During the of them have endeared themselves to the dents and faculty, thus is most appropri them the title of King and Queen of ularity. •i l-r.V . entine s , ;-4f ri ' A ' vw nd girls in ;;W,V, {:V! six people ' ' ' ' ?• V i You ' re the same to him no matter who you are. He ' ll be ' your friend both near and far. No truer words could be uttered than theje to portray the personality we are trying to describe. Everyone at Tennessee Wes- levan College has grown to love Edell Hearn for the high stand- ards he has stood for and the example he has set for us here on the campus. His leadership as vice-president of the Student Body, of the Student Christian Association, as member of the Theta Sigma Chi Fraternity, Fellowship Team, Life Service Volunteers, Religious Council,- and other minor clubs and or- ganizations, will never be for- gotten by those who have shared in these fellowships with him. We, the students and faculty members of Tennessee Wes- leyan College, have felt it a great honor to have been able to share in these wonderful ex- periences, which have been portrayed by such a wonderful Christian personality in such a Christian way, that they will never be forgotten. We know that Edell will be successful in life and make a great contribution to his fri- ends, his community, and the world, for the great principles of life and the consideration for others that he has stood for while in our midst. Here ' s wishing Mr. T. W. C. of 1950, all the success and happiness that may be his for the future. MR T WC Have you heard the history of Rockwood, or what about the great ship Titanic? If not, then look up our most talented senior, Miss Helen Hinds, who has been chosen Miss T. W. C. for this year. With Helen ' s popularity, personality, leadership, talent, and friendliness, she is tops with all who know her. Not only is she President of her sorority, Kappa Delta Phi, but also Secretary of the Pan Helenic Council, and a member of the Art Club, Nocatula Staff, and S.C.A. Her vocation is in the field of teaching. Helen will always be remem- bered as our most representa- tive girl in the senior class. BULLDOGS ON THE GRIDIRON The football team, although plagued with injuries, had a fair record this season. Although the record does not seem so good, the team really showed a lot of cooperation. In the opener against East Tennessee State at Johnson City, the Bulldogs lost by a 19-6 score, after coming back in the second half and playing the East Tennessee boys to a standstill. The Bulldogs played their second game on the next Friday night in Milledgeville, Georgia, with Georgia Military College. This was the only setback by a Junior College this season — T.W.C. losing by a score of 25 to 0. On October 18, the Bulldogs were host to the South Georgia Junior College this being their first home game and by far the most outstanding game this season. The score of this game was 25 to 14 in favor of Wesleyan. Wesleyan played a powerful and strong Austin Peay (Senior) College at Clarksville, Tennessee, on October 15, losing to a tune of 64 to 19. The Bulldogs on October 22, played their next home game with Athens (Ala.) College to a 7 to 7 deadlock. The following weekend found Wes- leyan really romping and stomping over the University of Tennessee Junior College from Martin, Tennessee, to the score of 48 to 0. November 5 found the Bulldogs again in Johnson City playing the Milligan College Buffaloes and losing by the score of 19 to 7. As part of the Armistice Day celebra- tion, the Bulldogs played host to the T. P. I. freshmen from Cookeville, Tennessee, and won by a score of 20 to 7. Homecoming was on November 19 which found the Old Grads and friends of the College seeing a ball game that was a -■■ ' .;•■ ,-f« ' ..v . In f ' Jk3 r ?,■ «.. _::- , Coaches Rankin Hudson and Robert MaHhews hard fought affair. The Bulldogs played host to St. Bernard College from Cullman, Ala- bama, defeating them by the score of 39 to 0. On Thanksgiving afternoon the local grid fans saw their second afternoon game of the season and also the final game for 1949, between the Bulldogs and Middle Georgia Junior College from Cochran, Georgia. The score of this game was in favor of Wesleyan 39 to 0. 1949 SEASON SCHEDULE We They 6 East Tennessee State 19 Georgia Military College 25 25 South Georgia College 14 19 Austin Peay 64 7 Athens College 7 48 U. LENIER GOWENS CRUTCHFIELD KNOX GEORGE NICHOLS BULLDOGS ON THE HARDWOOD The Tennessee Wesleyan College Bas- ketball team completed a successful season recently. One of the highlights of the past season was the grand opening of the James L. Robb Gym. Approximately 1000 people were present to see Wesleyan put up a stiff battle only to lose 66-62 to Maryville Col- lege. Other outstanding games of the sea- son were with the University of Chattanooga, which Wesleyan won 77-58; Wesleyan tak- ing a hard one from the Dixie Spinners 60-54; Wesleyan losing a tough battle to the University of Tennessee Freshmen 57- 56; and losing the final game of the season to Emory and Henry 66-78, The team was led by Co-captains Smith and Rutledge with Hoggatt, Partain, and Stevenson making the starting team. The Southeastern Junior College Basket- ball Tourn ament was held in the Robb Gym, March 6 and 7 Teams from Kentucky, Ten- nesseee, Alabama, Georgia, and North Caro- lina made up the tournament. Tennessee Weslevan won their wav to the semi-finals bv defeating a strong Young Harris team 85-61, but were defeated in the semi-finals by the team which later pi-nved to be the tournament champions. The score was Camobellsville 49, Tennessee Weslevan 48. Co-Caotsin Smith and Hogatt were chosen on the All-Tournament team.
