E LIBRIS P . 1 P J _ an liiteiee t lu4.4 (llA.ed aa-d jfl-nii -nine PUBLISHED BY THE SEIVIOB CLASS OF TEI IVESSEE WESLEYAIV COLLEGE traditions and no ing Tlkisteates- etter th heritage hers than the legend of the two., trees, a hackberry and an oak, which have stood near the " sidewalk just north of Ritten; Hall. The hackberry died in rfecent years, but uje oak still stands after. 170 years,. Here Vi brief is the story as it was. hand downTtV the Indians. W Soon aTter the battle of King ' s Moutitain, about 1780, a hunting party of Cherokees found a young English officer wounded and almost dead not far from their village near the present site of Loudon. The In- dians, being friendly to the British, brought the soldier to their chief Atta-Kulla-Kullq), who had him carried to his own wigwarri ' Here he was iiursed back to health by th ' bi chief ' s daughter, No-ca-too-la Coo-we-nc , which means, " Sun shining on dew drops ' ' . After his recovery the young soldier ' s chief delight was in his daily association with the Indian maiden and soon their friend7 ship developed naturally into mutual lov After many moons ' lie old chief, mov « by the young soldier ' s sincerity and d ' votion, consented to his adoption into }fm tribe and gave the couple his blessing. Ttii soldier was given the name of Con-ne-stq- ga, " The Oak " , and was received in th , council circle. A new wigwam was biiilt ' ' and the two were happily married accord- ing to Indian custom V Late in the folIdwi« 3 ' " n»itiimb- the tribe moved westward, in a leisurely hunt, fin- ally camping ' 0 ' the big springs on the west side of the Eastanalle, from which the city of Ath ' ns now obtains its water. Then, xDne never-to-be-forgotten morning loHhesioga, with several hunting compj ions, left the, camp to make a deer drive ' a little farther down the valley. Here, while eeping toward the game, Connestoga gs attacked from behind by an unsuc- cessful rival for. the hcind ' of- Nocatoola. This young warrior sprang, upon him and _nlunged a knife into his neck. Turning, tA ohnestoga raised his rifle and fired at the fleeing brave whose deathsshrjek rang fcut witjf the Report of they J lln a v w short time Nocdtoo-la was at her lovOTs side and as the life breath ebbed from her loved one, and with the words " I cannot, " " ! will not, live without hira-; ' ' she p,],unged Jlae =iiIs ,Urt ,h --aWT bg ' ' jVccording to Indian custom the bodies re not distiirbed and before the earth ering was applied, the grief-stricken oid chief placed in the right hand of each olpeed. In Connestoga ' s an acorn, in No- CGMoola ' s a hackberry. From these grew the two trees, symbolizing undying love and devotion, truly among the richest of WesleycFD- ' s many heritages from the past. DR. JAMES I. ROBB In recognition of his thirty years of faithful service to Tennessee Wesleyan College, his high sense of duty and responsibility, through which he has won a host of friends both for the institution and for him- self; and in recognition of his high sense of justice, his wise counsel, his breadth of vision, and his perseverance in adversity and success, we, the Senior Class of Tennessee Wesleyan College, dedicate this yearbook of 1949 to Dr. James L. Robb, President of the College. The physical plant and the academic position of the College are largely a product of his leadership and foresight, and under his skillful guidance Tennessee Wesleyan looks forward to new horizons. TWC ON THE GRIDIRON The Tennessee Wesleyan " Bulldogs " under Coach Rankin Hudson and assistant Bob Matthews retained the Championship of the Southeastern Junior College Con- ference in 1948. Led by co-captains R. L. Ballew and Bill Blair, the squad compiled an impressive record against tough junior college and senior college competition. Although the season ' s records stands at four wins and four loses, Wesleyan justified its cham- pionship calibre by defeating some rug- ged senior college competition. Wesleyan ' s defeat of highly-favored G. M. C. and Austin Peay, junior and sen- ior colleges respectively, were the out- standing triumphs of the season. The leaders of the Blue and Gold ' s of- fense were Alex Williams, devasting fullback, with nine touchdowns; and Ar- thur Farford, fleet wingback, who scored four touchdowns and one extra point. Such stalwarts as R. L. Ballew, Grady Gowens, Ed McBroom, and A. J. Reeves played stellar roles on defense. While several key players will be lost through graduation this year, Coach Hud- son will have a sturdy core around which to build another championship team in ' 49. At our annual Football Banquet, spon- sored by the Athens Jaycees letters were awarded and outstanding individuals cited for their performances. Fullback Alex Wil- liams received the Most Valuable Player Award; and Coach Hudson received a trophy from the team in expression of its gratitude for his fine leadership. As a final act as the 1948 Bulldogs, the team selected A. J. Reeves and " Buck " Mitchell as co-captains for the 1949 season. CO-CAPTAINS R. L.
