To these thirteen who gave their lives that posterity might enjoy the life of peace which they were deprived of, we reverently dedicate this 1945 NOCATULA. To them we give our faithful promise to carry on the work that they were not privileged to complete. And with this dedication, we offer our fervent prayer that these dead shall not have died in vain and that through their supreme sacrifice and that of thousands like them, all nations under God shall have a new birth of freedom. EAUTIE jean Harnett adelon S vtvidi c eona J- i ranees ui llawi J rc awer pi op — Interior of Lawrence Hall Looking down from Library Jentsr — Old College Building lottom — Petty Manker Hall K tass rrlstom Well Seniors, now that we are sitting back contentedly with a sheepskin clutched in our greedy little hands, let ' s tell all these good people the history of our assemblage, from the moment that we swept in through the arch two years ago, until our departure. ' Twas in early September, 1943, A.D. when we came into this haven of learning. We came with an eager gleam for knowledge shining from our eyes and it was by sheer force that the faculty kept us from plunging into our studies the very first day! We were a junior class that to all outward appearances was the same as many of our predecessors with the exception of one major difference; the near absence of males. However, there were enough to still safely say, Wesleyan is co-educational. The fairer sex was amply represented on the campus by a group of juniors sev- enty-one strong. At the appointed time our little group went with level heads and light steps (or was it light heads and level steps?) into the library to matriculate. No one had told us the secret of maintaining our equilibrium while travers- ing these glass-like, waxed floors, so a few steps produced damp palms and agitated nerves, for it would have been very unbecoming to clumsily fall on our face at the face of some superior senior! Some hours later we emerged and amid the babble and confusion, these naive remarks were heard to per- meate the air: Is Orientation a Prof, or a course? , I just know I can ' t take this biology course, why I ' d just die if I had to look at the inside of a worm. Somebody told me that all you had to do was come to class every day and you automatically passed. You know I ' ve heard that they ' re going to take the blackboards out of Prof. Evins room, it seems that they ' ve deteriated from nonuse. The bystanding seniors were heard to mutter, Live and learn. Although all of us started on an equal footing, some, due to their divers abilities, came forward to lead their classmates. Our noble clan was under the leadership of such class officers as David Giles, James Guffey, Elnora Daniels and Frances Cunningham. Later in the year, after a vigorous campaign for the election of Nocatula President, and Vive-President Editor of the Student Body, Frances Cunningham, Nelle Rose Ware and Doris Dickson were respectively elected to these high positions, promising to try and make everybody happy! At the end of the year we were feeling that School life here a ' t best is passing. In the fall of 1944 our enrollment had decreased. (Probably due to a condition of survival of the fittest !) This time when we matriculated in the library we were able to stride confidently across the floor, having acquired the art of balance. In November our country was in the midst of a presidential election, and being politically-minded we couldn ' t keep out of it. In order to familiarize us with voting procedures, the Student Council conducted a poll. Soon the ol ' Wesleyan campus was a near facsimile of a political battle ground. We had a heated debate in chapel one day and the enthusiasm of the classes was such they practically threw chairs and knives at the debaters. (Can we help it if we ' re public spirited?) Democratic supporters of Roosevelt and Republican supporters of Dewey had rousing conventions and rallies and finally went to the polls to vote. When the smoke of battle had cleared away and votes were counted, Dewey, the Republican candidate won. However, republican Wesleyan yielded to a democratic nation. Since we are a war class it was only natural that we engaged in drives and campaigns to aid in the war effort. One distinctive activity of our class work was the W.S.S.F. (World Student Service Fund) campaign. We had Red Cross drives and War Bond drives. We also heard many fine lectures on world affairs. 1944 rushed by us dropping 1945 in our laps. We felt that we were being whirled through a labyrinth with graduation day as its end. And we thoroughly understood the phrase, Fast the moments flee. As we sing our Alma Mater on graduation day, all of these and other phases of our college life will well up in our memory and we will for all time Pledge in word and deed our love for T.W.C. ass We, the Senior Class of 1945, being about to pass out of this sphere of education in full possession of a well- trained mind, sound judgment and almost super human knowledge, do hereby make, publish and declare this our last will and testament, revoking and making void all former wills and promises by us heretofore made. To the Junior class we give and begueath all the rich wisdom and experience of Seniors, namely how to stay off Dean ' s carpet, wangle extra week ends, and plant hackberry trees. Being possessed of numerous and valuable individual possessions, we hereby dispose of said articles, and throw in a nicely assorted lot of slightly used chemistry problems, English Lit and Psych guestions guestions that we had to skip over, hoping that some up and coming genius may probe their myserious and unknown depths. David Giles leaves his musical talent to James Craid — also his way with women. Jewell Raper and Madge Jacobs will to anyone interested, their quiet and dignified manners. I, Jeanne Elliot, bequeath my basketball captaincy to Louise Williams. I, Ginny Massengill, leave my wim, wigor and witality to Hazel Kibler. Virginia Harris wills her ability to maintain her equilibrium on a glassy library floor to Helen Ratledge. June Linkous and Marie Hart will their Friday night dates to anyone who can get them. Mildred Stephenson leaves her pet spider to Virginia Webb. Roxie Lee Thomas gives her teaching ambitions to Peggy Parton. Frances Hampton bequeaths Y worries to Jeanne McGovern.
