THE CHILD, ' WEENA ' As soon as the Indians learned of the perfidy of the whites they followed them with a yearning for vengeance. A few of the older chiefs tried to warn the white men but arrived too late. The mass- acre was already going on. One chief, Atta- kull-kulla noticed a young woman begging for mercy for her baby boy. He bade the warrior spare them and took them both into his household. About a year later a baby girl was born to the Indian chief and the white woman whom he had taken as his wife, now known in the tribe as Ocama. She was named Na-ca-too-la- Coo-we-na, which meant sun shining on dew drops . This was shortened to Weena. As she grew into womanhood she became a very beautiful maiden and was a great joy to the old chief and his wife. THE COLLEGE A
