We, the members of the staff of the 1.934 EAGLE, Wish to dedicate this, the ninth vol- ume of our annual, to Professor Herman Pinkerton, a man Who, through his kindness, deference, and interest for others, has Won a place of esteem in the hearts of both students and fellow members of the faculty, Who, through his active interest in the-Institute, its students and affairs, has helped to main- tain and promote its high standards of social contacts, and above all, its primary object as an institution of higher learning-that of scholarship. The staff presents this book to the student body so that in future years they may turn the pages of THE EAGLE of 1934 and live again, in memories, the days at Tech. f V ' V. ilk if . The Hres of this experience have burned into their conscience the faith, perseverance, honor and hope necessary to meet every duty courageously. THE DEAN Throughout the countless ages Industry has been a faithful rewarder of those who worshiped at her shrine. She has blazed the way through forests and laid the foundations for great citiesg she has written volumes of choicest literature and recorded "the achievements of mang she built the pyramids, dug the Panama Canal and revealed the secrets of nature. She daily tramples indolence under her feet. She scorns the sluggard whose offspring must beg bread. Thrift, contentment and plenty are her children. She is the first to greet the rising sun and the last to lay her shovel down. Pasteur loved her, Edison embraced her, and poets have sung her praises. Her magic touch banishes the ills' of society. An honest day's Work is her motto, and success is her crown. f f ' -1 AUSTIN W. SMITH FACULTY J. M. HENDERSON ElIgilIL'L'l'iIIX Dcpnrlmezli DR. D. R. BARTOO Biology Dr'11.fu'lmeul I T. L. PASSONS A. "PUTTY" OVERALL, despite many inexperienced men, has constructed a successful team this year. His season was some- what handicapped by injuries ap- pearing before some of the hardest games scheduled. Coach is ever ready to help young athletes with their problems and has a knack for selecting material and shaping it into a winning combination. The man behind the scene in the athletics of Tech is none other than F. U. Foster, secretary of the Athletic Council, he is responsible for a large part of the recognition and prestige gained by Tech teams, and for those splendid schedules we have enjoyed. Wliere could be found a more com- petent basketball coach than R. M. Smith? With the spectacular Frosh team of '34 We know that Coach Smith has formulated a con- sistent, winning hardwood quintet, for varsity material next year. We ap- preciate the loyalty and effort put forth by these men. They have labored enthusiastically to give Tech her place in athletics and we will miss them next year. "Luke" Lucas, the tackling tackle from Winchester, was a big factor in Tech's line this year. We will find it hard to replace him next year. "Wink', Midgett, the kicking, passing quar- ter from Watertowii, has been a mainstay of f' ics! the backfield. His ex- cellent playing this year gave him the title of "most valuable player in Mississippi Valley Conference." "Woodie" Forbes, the chunky guard from Millington, has held the Old Tech line admira- bly during his two years at Tech. His absence will cause a gap that will be hard to fill. "Jimmie" Barlow has rendered valuable serv- ice to his Alma Mater. He was our cool- headed full from Sa- vannah. "Strick" Strickland is a powerful full f r o m Hartford, Ala.
