Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1987 volume:

A YEAR TO REMEMBER Tennessee Preparatory School was founded in 1885 by the late Colonel E.W. Cole as a memorial to his son, Randall, who was killed in an accident at the age of nineteen. T.P.S. is part of the Tennessee State Board of Education. Dependent and neglected children, ages twelve to eighteen, from all areas of Tennessee are placed here. The children are provided with housing, food, clothing, education, extra- curricular activities are also available for those who wish to participate. T.P.S. has been a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1935. A well balanced curriculum, offering individualized programming as well as college preparatory courses and vocational training classes, is offered to the students enrolled here. Many T.P.S. graduates have continued their education and hold degrees from such institutions as Auburn, Peabody, Tennessee Tech, University of Tennessee, and Vanderbilt, and have become prominent in the business community as well as good leaders in other fields. ln keeping with its purpose, T.P.S. has been home for thousands. Much growth and many changes have occurred over superintendents. This year marks the completion of an exten- sive building program which created residential cottages and new school facilities for all students. The future will continue to hold many improvements as we strive to provide the very best we can for those students enrolled here. HEAR YE, HEAR YE! Mr. Barnard, Do Women Always Fight Over You? Are Ya'II Working Or Posing? fx"'QX Many of us didn't know at the time - but we lived, worked and played with a legend. Yes, a legend true and strong walked among us. Now he is gone. Murray Spencer was a legend if there was one. He touched so many lives at Tennessee Preparatory School. He was a good man. A hard - working man. A man of discipline. A man of charity. He died September 23, in his sleep, after suffering the last several years with crippling arthritis that confined him to a wheelchair. There are grown men working across this nation today who would not have a certain ingredient in their character had they not been privileged to have Spencer as a friend and mentor during their early years. He spent much of his life helping those of us who, during a period in our lives, needed someone who cared, someone with a strong hand and a charitable heart. I know that his former boxers will not forget the early morning wakeup calls to run track. He kept a stopwatch so that he could time the laps and ensure that one was cutting across the backstretch. Many of us will not , cannot remember the Spencer of the last years. To us he was a robust, strong, masculine guy who fought bears with switches and drove nails with his fist. He fought in the Golden Gloves in the 1930's as a heavyweight, although he weighed only 164 pounds. An aggressive, busy type of fighter, he kept his opponents moving backwards . . . or down. He loved golf. He used to practice his short games in front of IN MEMORY OF MURRAY "LARKY" SPENCER Il' 5' Q I , QQ I l f' ,lk the boys' high school dorm, or on the football field whenever time allowed. And he loved dogs, too. He always had one or two as pets. They were with him almost everywhere he went. You couldn't visit the boys' barber shop without seeing them. They hung closely by him and wouldn't allow anyone to fake a playful punch at him without snarling viciously. He was an accomplished barber. But that is the least of the memories we have of him. More notably, he was a strong, dedicated man whose love of Tennessee Prepartory School was unquestioned. He was at a Friday night football game before his death on Tuesday. Though obviously in great pain most of the time, he still drove himself to be near his beloved school and the students. He never missed a club 40 reunion, where he regaled alumni with tales of yester- year. And he laughed harder than anyone. He was not a scholarly man. He did not need to be. His life's work was helping the underprivileged children in the way he was best equipped - listening to their stories, showing sympathy when they needed it, cheering their success, encouraging them when they faltered, and, yes, reprimanding them when they strayed. They will be talking of Murray Spencer in years to come. They will say how devoted he was to the school and its students. How he helped many of the kids with money from his own pocket. How he strode the sidelines of every football game. How he cheered every athletic success, be it football, basketball, baseball, boxing or track, And how he shared in the agony of the defeats as well. He was a legend, no doubt. Now the legend has passed.
