Joan Balthazar, a hostess for American Air- . lines, is also making the excursion. ln addition to these, a group of newspaperwomen is traveling over to cover the show for the New York papers. Among them are reporters Priscilla Littlefield, Ann Metzger, Peggy Pellet, Charlotte Willich, and Marilyn Young and fashion illustrators Marion Renner, Lucille Sposa, Joan Tutschek, and Deborah Wallwork. Editor Richard Steinmetz of the Times is also sending his brilliant cartoonist, John Karaffa, to caricature the models and the audience, Making the trip to represent the United States are five American models, Janet Berk- shire, Patricia Gay, Claire Hogan, Doris Kuver, and Marjorie Owen. Mary Ellen Conlon and Nancy Stuart, buyers for Gimbel's and Macy's respectively, will also attend the show. lsignedl 1 Wessel Brodhead, Master l I . Bob lDorsey Ill Birtwhistle began the evening's entertainment with a saxafone rendition of "Poppa's Staying ln Nights 'Cause The Warden Keeps The Key." He gave several encores. Then an informal duo, composed of Sam Litzenberg of the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra on the bass fiddle and Joe Zucca of the Boston "Pops" Orchestra on the violin, rendered several numbers. Next May Carter, Ida Coffele, and Rina Chini, featured artists in Spike Jones Jr.'s Band, did their version of "TenafIy Alma Mater" in honor of President Saydah. ' Following this Catherine Walten, the celebrated Metropolitan mezzo-soprano, sang "Mule Train" and "Ragg Mopp." The balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet" was presented by Arthur Williams and Lea Von Hoff, famous Shakespearean actors, at present on a leave of absence from the brilliant new mystery play by Don Walls, "The Case Of The Two Italians ln The Maternity Ward, or Which Tony has Twins?" Don Kimmick, Lois Poucher, Gloria Geer, and Dick Hollis, stars of Geraldine Woodbury's revival of "The Merry Widow", sang practically every song in the operetta before the audi- ence let them stop, the applause was deafening. Doris Rencken, Dolores Walker, and her sister Patricia Walker, ballerinas in the "Ballet Russe", then performed several of their newest dances, and after Joan Beck did her famous novelty twirling act, Gail Lindsay, new singing? discovery of Andy DeSantis, MGM talent scout, and Tom Carrino, barker in the Ringling Brother, Barnum and Bailey Circus, concluded the program by singing "l've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts." Many famous members of New York society and "Cafe Society" were seen in the audi- ence, bedecked in the richest clothes and jewels. Prominent among the celebrities was mil- lionaire playboy Tom Clarke, who is reputed to have made his money as a disk jockey under an assumed name. Wealthy socialites Veronica Amicucci, Millie Ascolese, Marion Burkhardt, and Janice Holland, all making an around-the-world cruise for the seventh time, were also seen in the audience. After the show quite a knot of admirers gathered around Charles Bonanno, David Elg, Paul Gilmore, Keith Kerr, Richard Kuhn, Herbert Schuffenhauer, and Thomas Sheeran, founders and charter members of the "Retire At 2l, Live to lO0" club. Anyone may join the club, and their only rule is that by the time a member reaches the age of twenty-one he must retire with at least a million dollars in the bank. All of the founders achieved this by marrying rich widows. Vincent Kane, world-renowned yacht designer, who designed the "Half-Century"'itself, was also present. lsignedl Wessel Brodhead, Master I li Mbgihy ,, . Our beauty parlor operators, Ethel Schade and Dorothy Wright, first reported it. Three of their clients, Miss Anita LaBella fiancee of Al Smith, the basketball ace, Miss .lane Payton, fiancee of football hero George Haynor, and Miss Noris Messinger, personnel manager of Sak's Fifth Avenue, succumbed in rapid succession. Next, Mr. Robert Smith, our dancing instructor, reported three more cases, Miss Barbara Coady, Mr. Donald Logan, and Mr, Fred Schollenberger, I The ship's doctor, Mort Sullivan, could not diagnose the cases, and ship's pharmacist, Charles Heuslein, could offer no assistance. Therefore New York specialists Ned Castner and John Hogan, medical technician Jean Reinberg, and even veterinarians Kenneth Juechter, Chad Nelson, and Josef Winter were called in on the cases before they were finally deduced to be merely spells of seasickness. Quite a bit of difficulty has been caused this trip by a group of agriculturists and animal breeders who are going to study European farming methods. Farmers Irving Bond and Charles Giguere have brought seeds and a couple of barrels of soil aboard along with their luggage, and they have started to grow corn in the bathtubs. Horticulturist Charles Travers has his stateroom full to the brim with tropical plants. Richard Giguere, a bee-keeper, has somehow smuggled two beehives on board and the ship is now aswarm with bees. The stateroom of Charles Haas, the herpetologist, is crawling with snakes, and conservation workers Robert Jorgenson and Robert Vicari are trying to grow trees in the lifeboats. As if this were not enough, Miss Barbara Robinson, who raises horses, has sneaked a colt into her cabin! ln addi- tion to this, dairy farmer Richard Carlson has a cow in his room and ranchowners Leo Cevasco, Donald Marden, and Charles Menzer have a bull in theirsl Three engineers, Robert Frasco, Ronald St. Laurent, and Charles Stone, and electrician John Thomas are also giving the crew a hard time. They insist on venturing hints on how to make the ship go faster and farther on less fuel, Heaven Help Us! On the brighter side our photographers, Naomi Hallden, Theodore Louv, Robert Mc- Cormick, and Robert McDonald have reported a thriving business. Among those who have had their portraits done are Donald DeSaIvia, head of the DuPont Laboratories, Sanford Dorf, General Manager of Rolls Royce, Ltd., John Keck, the geologist, Ned Eller, the renowned architect, his draftsmen, Allen Kent and George Miller, and his accountant, Terence Rempe. John Ortiz Gerald Sheeran, the famous stunt fliers, Henry Westphalen, the printing execu- tive, John Ricardi, the wealthy importer, Glenn Purcell, New York businessman, George Simon, President of Frigidaire, lnc., and Ralph Quackenbush, Chicago textile magnate, also had their pictures taken. Two wild-eyed fellows who give their names as Arthur Brummer and Henry Muller keep pestering me every time they see me. Under the able leadership of Coach George Clark, Tenafly proved itself a power to be reckoned with. Headed by Captain George Haynor, the team played through a hard schedule that saw them win 2, tie l, and lose 5. We'll never forget the game with Cliffside Park which we won 34-l 3 or the game against the strong Teaneck club which resulted in a tie of l2-l2. During the next few games the Tigers were unable to display the football of which they were capable. However, in the last game of the season a rejuve- nated Tenafly eleven met Dumont in a post-season contest and won, l4-l3. With some returning veterans Tenafly hopes to make next season's team one of the finest. oothall l My-J "'2"' .
