It is with a sense of pleasure that I write this letter to the Class of 2011. Each of you has just completed the most challenging four years of your lives and 1 take pride in congratulating you. More than that, however. I want to tell you that you arc the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. While it is true that we have clinics, laboratories, classrooms and dormitories, a school without the vibrant energy of the student is a building whose purpose has disappeared. You arrived at TUSPM at a time of evolution. You have seen new faculty, upgrading of facilities and the progress that be part of Temple’s Health Sciences affords. During the past four years, this was your school, but in a larger sense, you became the school. As you begin post graduate training and leave us here in Philadelphia, you take the school with you. You will forever be identified as a Temple University graduate. TUSPM and you will always be connected. We have given you the finest education in the nation. We have given you clinical experience that is unequaled in our profession and we have given you the degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. Now it is your turn. Because you will always be a TUSPM graduate, we look to you to carry that degree with competence, compassion, and success. You now enter a career in which your patient and his or her condition will demand your expertise. As you enter practice and develop roots in the community that you choose. I ask that you never forget the roots that you leave here at TUSPM. You have earned the right to wear the degree that we have bestowed upon you with pride. I challenge you to use that degree to the benefit of both your practice and your alma matter as those who gave gone before you have done. I want you to become active with your alumni association and maintain connection with your classmates. Your alumni peers have generously endowed scholarships for the benefit of TUSPM students and have given of their financial resources for the continual upgrading of TUSPM. I want you to come back to Philadelphia to visit us periodically and 1 want you to visit us on the web consistently. Wherever you go in you life, you lake our name and you remain our graduate. Never forget that because we will never forget you and the time that you have spent here. Go now and apply those skills that you gained here. Be diligent. Be tenacious. Be inquisitive and be successful. You are now a permanent part of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. Spadone, D.RM. Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Program Integrity Congratulations on attaining this milestone in your personal and professional lives. You have successfully traversed a long path that few embark upon and still fewer complete. Even as today marks the culmination of years of effort and sacrifice, it heralds the onset of even more of the same before you can truly begin to reap the rewards you deserve. I have every confidence that each of you will persevere and sooner rather than later find light at the end of the tunnel. What is this almost forgotten light? Is it a mythical thing, a Jungian archetype of our collective unconscious? I suspect for many it represents the prospect of broadening your horizons, to devoting more time and energy to personal and family lives, recreational pursuits, and more, all made possible by the end of unremitting study. You arc already far along the learning curve in this profession. By the time you complete residency training you will have progressed somewhat further. You will make still more progress, albeit incremental, along this path until you achieve board certification, but learning does not end there. You can never reach a point at which you have learned all there is to know. New knowledge and understanding arc being developed at exponentially increasing rates, far faster than any of us can assimilate. At this juncture you must transition to becoming selective learners, able to sift through the morass and keep up with that most germane to your needs and those of your patients. The ability to be selective has its foundations in your ever increasing knowledge base and it is this selectivity that will enable you to broaden your horizons as you so richly deserve, but you must continue to leant throughout your lives in order to support this ability. It is one of the circles of life: Learning is life and life is a continual learning experience. Learn long and prosper! Sincerely, __- Samuel J. Spadone, D.P.M. The next greatest biggest thank you is to my parents, for all their love, encouragement, and understanding.
