I want to tell you that you are the Temple University School of Podiatnc Medicine While it is true that we have classrooms, dorrmtones. clinics and laboratories, a school without the life and energy of the student is a single purpose building whose purpose has disappeared. You entered TUSPM in a tune of transition. You have seen new faculty, new facilities and the positive growth that affiliation with Temple's Health System affords. During the past four years, this was your school, but in a larger sense, you became the school. As you leave us here in Philadelphia and begin post graduate training or practice, you take the school with you. You will forever be identified as a Temple University School graduate Because of this, you and TUSPM will always be connected. We have given you the finest education in the nation. We have given you clinical experience that is unrivaled in the history of our profession and we have given you the degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. Now it is your turn. Because you will always be a TUSPM graduate, we look to you to carry that degree with competence, compassion, and ultimately, success. You now enter a career in which your patient and his or her condiuon will demand your attention As you build a practice and you expand your roots in the community that you choose, 1 ask that you never forget the roots that you leave here at TUSPM. 1 want you to wear the degree that we have bestowed upon you with pride and I challenge you to use that degree to the benefit of both your practice and your alma mater I want you to join your class alumni association and maintain connection with your class mates. 1 want you to come back to Philadelphia to visit us periodically and I want you to visit us on the web consistently. Wherever you go in your life, you take our name and you remain our graduate. Never forget that because we will never forget you and the time that you have spent here. Go now and apply those skills that you gained here. Be diligent Be tenacious Be inquisitive and be successful. You are now a permanent pan of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. Now you arc about to take your nghtful places as podintric physicians and surgeons. You have my nrx:crest congratulations In reflection, I sought the appropriate words to commemorate your accomplishments Predictably, they had already been written. These words were originally composed to congratulate others in far different circumstances but still have relevance to you. They were first addressed by General Scott to his troops at Chapultepec and subsequently repeated by General Patton to the soldiers of the Third Army and Nineteenth Tactical Air Force sinking for Bastogne and beyond: Brave rifles, veterans, you have been baptized in fire and blood and have come out steel. The sacrifices you have made to reach this milestone in your lives are not of the same character as those of the stalwart wamors of yesteryear However, the inner strength and drive needed to achieve all victories is much the same. Much has been asked of you these past four years and you have always risen to the occasion. Please grant me the indulgence of asking one thing more: Go forward and continue always to exemplify those qualities in yourselves that have caused we, the faculty, to take such justifiable pndc in each of you. I find myself at a loss for words of wisdom to impart to you as you make the transition from being my students to being my colleagues. However, 1 speak for the entire faculty in urging you to remember one thing: Relationships do not end simply because they change Always feel free to call upon us if we can be of assistance in the future and please keep us apprised of your accomplishments. DPM[Natalie R. Peine, DPM University of Texas at Austin B.A. Economics, Psychology To my family who was always just a phone call away, thank you for always being there for me. The last four years have passed by so quickly, yet were packed with so many real life events. I continued to focus on my goals and dreams w ithout allowing any obstacles to stand in my way for too long. Thank you for your support, your understanding, and most of all for your love. Aside from all of the huge amounts of textbook information and clinical experience, my greatest lesson in the past four years w as not learned in the classroom or the clinic. It had to do with distinguishing empathy from sympathy. I always thought that I was a sympathetic person toward others, which I felt would be a great quality for a doctor. But. this past year one of the major support pillars in my life was taken away from me. I lost my father to cancer in a five month time period, which seemed so unreal and hard to accept. When I left Texas in 2000 to set out on my journey to become a doctor 1 never would have imagined that my father wouldn't have been there with my mother to see my graduation day. I now can truly understand the feelings that others must go througli when they experience the loss of a loved one. This is empathy. I know their pain, but before I was only able to sympathize. Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you lake your eyes off your goals. ■Author Unknown People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing. -Dale Carnegie It is not the length of life, but the depth of life. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Natalie R.
