In Memoriam The PCPM community suffered a great loss when LeGrand Newman, M.Ed., Associate Dean of Student Affairs, passed away last June at the age of 54. LeGrand received his baccalaureate degree in biology from Elizabeth City State College and a Masters degree in education from Temple University. LeGrand served the College for over twenty years. He was a dedicated and important member of the Student Affairs staff. In addition to being instrumental in minority student recruitment, he directed the STEP program which introduced junior college students to the field of podiatric medicine and the College. LeGrand also coordinated the SARP program for incoming first year students. He was a friend and counselor to all PCPM students and in particular a mentor for minority students. He was also active in many outside organizations such as the National Association of Medical Minority Educators. LeGrand was a trusted colleague and good friend for many years. His warmth and service to PCPM are greatly missed. —M. Lucinda Strycker, D.P.M. D'Aprix President Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine JOHN F. D’APRIX rataocM To I he Class of 1996: You have negotiated successfully to its completion, the first leg of your professional journey by completing an unrelentingly challenging course of study experienced by only an exceedingly small percentage of our society. For this, you have my heartfelt congratulations. You also have my respect for having been so strongly motivated that you perserved in the presence of not only a daunting curriculum, but an anxiety-engendering environment of change. Yours Is the first class to feel the full impact of major sea changes in the healthcare sector which undoubtedly will alter irrevocably the course of podiatry as a profession. As it is unlikely that these seas soon will be calm, it is important for you to rely upon the anchor of your own skills and knowledge to secure your competitive position and to seek safe harbor with others in the profession. Finally, you have my best wishes for a healthy and prosperous future life in which the memory of this small College and your brief passage through it will be increasingly appreciated. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, eve the dull and ignorant; they too have their story Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit If you compare yourself with other, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in you own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass... You ore a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right tri be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Dr. John Fenice It began in September of nineteen ninety-two John and Ang moved to Phillv; his dream to pursue A lifelong ambition, a podiatrist-to-be. To earn the coveted title, doctor of podiatry. John studied hard; the hours were long yet he didn't seem to put a foot wrong. In clinic he easily withstood the heat while working on patient's aching feet. Congratulations, John, of you we are proud and Angie deserves some applause, long and loud! As a family we offer a special gift to you seven bunions, to corns and a hammertoe, too! We love you!!! Artie, Jennie, Marie, Van, Emma, Julie, Paul, Erin, Cheryl, Henry, Paulie and T.J.CONGRATULATIONS!!! JOHN FENIGE D.P.M. This is a story of four years in Philly, that turned out to be quite a dilly. We think it will be four, let's hope it's not more, to commute from New York would be silly. The day we arrived I knew, John had to find something to do. He was hired on the spot, at a place called "The Trot," PCPM beckoned and John said ado. Here's where life as we knew it did end, I said goodbye to my husband and friend. I learned how to shop, while John was at CHOP, all night keeping infants on the mend. Your years of studying have been long and hard, just take a look at your report card. We'll just have to wait and see, about that residency. Cross your fingers and hope its near Barnard. So here's to the class of '96, and to those whose feet they will fix. We raise our toes in salute, may the bunions bring you loot, so much so you'll do Clip Chip's just for kicks! I knew you could do it! ___________________________________Love always, Angie Dr. John V.
