biter oConcj RETIREMENT r. Walter Long has dedicated his entire career to Temple University. As a class, we thank him for his continued emphasis on our education, his supportive nature and for inspiring us through the world of microbiology. We congratulate him on his retirement. 1976-2012 Born jn Alabama with a keen interest in the sciences, Dr. Long was in a select group of students that participated in a countywide enrichment program. Dr. Long was exposed to a variety of possible scientific careers but what impressed him the most was a visit to the CDC’s Oatland Island research facility. With the encouragement of the CDC staff, he decided then that he wanted to become a microbiologist. Dr. Long attended the University of Georgia, where he graduated in 1966 with a B.S. in Bacteriology. He then earned his Ph.D. in virology from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1972. He continued to develop his expertise in virology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, where he was a postdoctoral fellow from 1972-1976. He came to Temple School of Dentistry in 1976. Dr. Long’s primary research focus has been on the role DNA methylation plays in Epstein-Barr virus latency and reactivation. He also became involved in the education of dental students. In 1985, Dr. Long took over the directorship of the Central Hybridoma Facility. He participated in numerous studies including the production of a library of monoclonal antibodies to HIV, a monoclonal antibody to inhibit neovascularization of tumors, and research to develop monoclonal antibodies directed against opioid receptors. Dr. Long transferred to the Medical School in 1986, but continued to participate in teaching virology and immunology to dental students until his retirement. In keeping with his dedication to teaching, Dr. Long took over leadership of the Microbiology and Immunology course at the medical school in 2000. His southern upbringing was reflected in his calm and orderly manner. He was patient with students and faculty alike. Dr. Long has always had the students’ best interests foremost in regard to all of his roles in teaching and curriculum reform. He was willing to take on administrators if he thought their plans for the curriculum were not educationally sound. Once changes were agreed upon, he worked tirelessly 30 RETIREMENT
