Dr. Schneck graduated in 1959 and completed his internship in 1960. He returned to Temple, his home institution, as faculty. He taught gross anatomy, histology, embyrology and neuroanatomy all during his first year. At this time, he simultaneously pursued his PhD. In 1965, Dr. Schneck became the first person to receive a doctorate degree from the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. In 1974, he was promoted to full professor. He has won countless teaching awards including the first Alpha Omega Alpha Distinguished Teacher’s Award in basic science, the first Temple University Great Teacher Award, and of special note, the nation’s first Golden Apple. He stresses that the awards that come from his students mean that much more to him, “To receive an award from a national organization is not the same as receiving an award from the students I love.” Understandably, his recognition is well deserved. Outside of medicine, Dr. Schneck enjoys reading theology and gardening. He and his wife, Freda, married in 1956 after final exams. Raised half a block apart, they actually met at the end of high school, dated through college a and have been together ever since. They have two daughters; Deborah who received her BS and MBA from Temple, and Stephanie who received her BS and MD from Temple as well. In a recent reflection of his time at Temple, Dr. Schneck had the following to say: Temple, as they say, has been an amazing ride. Since my first day on campus 58 years ago, the school and its people have deeply imprinted my life. With my retirement comes a sense of awe for Temples myriad imprints. Imprints of time, events, teachers, students, colleagues, patients - imprints of a million varieties. Some that shaped us, some that have been shaped by us. I enjoy thinking about how these imprints will resonate out across time to influence people we will never even know and events and discoveries that we cannot even imagine.
