Pharmacology HOODERS Graduation is a cultural tradition considered a rite of passage from one platform in a student’s life to another. It has its origins in antiquity where many tribes were found to be celebrating their passing from youth to adulthood through various customs and observances. Today's graduation ceremony is a manifestation of this ancient rite of passage in the modern context. An important part of the graduation ceremony is the giving of the hoods. The origin of the hood lies with the Celts and Druids (the Celtic priests). Among the Celts, only the Druids wore mantles which had hoods attached to them as a mark of their rank in the society. In the schools of the Middle Ages, the hoods were worn as a covering to protect against frigid temperatures. Gradually, it was integrated into the academic system with much symbolic significance. Now, the wearing of hoods symbolizes authority, high standing, or a new graduate’s institution and degree. A hood is always black in color, but the edges and lining have individual significance. The hood is lined in silk with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The edging of the hood is velvet, with a color representative of a field of study. The official colors of Temple University are cherry and white. The dark green velvet signifies medicine. One of the great continuing traditions is the presence of hooders - individuals who symbolically bestow the medical degree upon each graduate. Each senior class chooses four individuals to assist with the placement of the hoods. These distinguished members of the faculty were selected not only for their superior quality of teaching, but for their passion, hard work, and dedication. Each hooder has committed themselves to challenging the minds of medical students and encouraging the development of future doctors to this great profession. Thank you Dr. Cash, for showing us gentle care of little ones. Thank you Dr. Heckman, for always putting us first. Thank you Dr. Savior, for encouraging us to do our very best. Thank you Dr. Schneck, for your love of teaching and inspiration through the years. Thank you Dr. Sterling, for your never ending support and dedication to our learning. 4 HOODERS 2013 «2V. John 2)Jj DEDICATION t was with great pleasure that Dr. John Daly was selected as the dedicatee for the 2013 edition of The Skull. For years, Dr. Daly devoted his time and experience to the students of Temple University School of Medicine. This dedication is but a small token of gratitude for improving our education. He will be particularly special to us, and we know our class will be special to him because of our fellow classmate, Maureen Daly Moore. On this rare occasion, we thought it was appropriate to have Maureen write some words to her father: Dad, On behalf of the class of 2013, please accept our deepest gratitude for your tireless effort in helping us become better doctors. You imparted your medical and professional knowl- edge on the medical students in order to make them excellent physicians. Your vision of a new medical school (where future students would learn and grow), not only became a reality, but also exceeded all expectations. You also knew that the foundation of any medical school was not in the infrastructure, but rather in its occupants. We as students benefitted tremendously from the support you provided to the existing faculty members as well as the new ones you recruited. On a personal level, you led by example in being a great father and great husband while also excelling in your professional career. I am proud and honored to be following in your footsteps. Thank you for all you do. Love always, Maureen DEDICATION 5 DEDICATION Every year, a dedicatee is chosen that a leader and physician helped to embodies a profound respect for the inspire us to continue moving medical profession. Fortunately, we chose someone that strived to make sure that the profession continues to grow and improve with each generation. Dr. Daly has ensured that our class will continue this legacy by providing us a firm foundation to learn. forward through the mercurial sea of medical school. Our home for the past four years was built mainly due to the effort of then Dean Daly. When he retired from the position of Dean, we were fortunate enough to thank him for his dedication to us as students by actively assisting in hosting his retirement party. (According to Dr. Daly, he fondly remembers this.) Most importantly, we will always remember Dr. Daly as our first introduction to Temple. His example as Born here in Pennsylvania, Dr. John Daly has made his mark in history in the state of Pennsylvania as well as the lives of many members of our class. His career began after he graduated cum laude from La Salle University. He started his medical education here at Temple and has remained dedicated to this institution since then. He graduated from Temple as an Alpha Omega Alpha in 1973 and went on to complete surgical residency at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. After residency, Dr. Daly further expanded his career at esteemed institutions such as Cornell University Medical College, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, before returning to Temple University School of Medicine as the dean. 6 DEDICATION His journey back to Temple was his way to give back not only to his community, but also the institution that he accredits to launching his illustrious career. During his time as Dean, he was able to raise the bar of excellence for the education provided to each class. Through the introduction of newer technology as well as new faculty, Temple University School of Medicine reached new heights in ensuring its students were prepared to pursue their careers in medicine. If we were to list all of his accomplishments, it would probably take up this whole dedication section. Dr. Daly not only achieved much, he continues to attain more credits to his name and reputation. He has been named as one of the Best Doctors in America since 2001. He has authored many research articles as well as sat on editorial boards for various journals. He also maintains affiliations with many medical interest groups. One of Dr. Dalys greatest honors -------------------------------------□ while at Temple includes his selection as Second Vice President-Elect of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Patricia Kelly Seetha Chandrasekhara His advice to the Class of 2013 is to continue the enthusiasm, steadfastness and desire to be the best physicians. He is happy for us to join the ranks of Temples dedicated alumni and he knows that as alumni of Temple, we will remember our time here warmly. SCHNECK m dr 1960-2012 To say that Dr. Carson Schneck is a Temple institution is an understatement. His name has become synonymous with Temple Medicine since the day we first stepped foot into our building. As we began delving into the world of anatomy, a day would not pass without at least browsing our Schneck notes, discovering a new “Schneck-ism” or learning through his demonstration. We offer our most sincere gratitude for his dedication to the past fifty years of Temple School of Medicine graduates. Dr. Schneck was born on October 10,1933 in Allentown, PA. He came from a hard working family. His father drove a beer delivery truck and his mother sewed buttons at a shirt factory. His parents always valued a strong foundation with education, and his mother had always hoped that he would become a physician. After graduating high school, however, Dr. Schneck took a different route. He began a job in construction and recalls loving the experience: “I could’ve been a drywaller for the rest of my life.” Fortunately for us, Dr. Schneck continued on his course towards medicine by attending Muhlenberg College in Allentown where he pursued premed classes, as well as others in philosophy, ethics and religion. It was at this time when he discovered the Socratic method of teaching and learning, which is present in his own teaching style. (Surely, we can all remember being called on by name during his teaching sessions.) After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955, Dr. Schneck began his medical education at his first choice, Temple University School of Medicine. He chose Temple because the faculty here were internationally recognized, but more importantly, for their great reputation as teachers. “I was pretty convinced that Temple had some of the best teachers and researchers in the world,” he remembers fondly, “I started considering a career in medical academics. It sure looked like fun.” His choice to pursue anatomy was due in large part to influence from his mentor, Dr. John Huber. Dr. Huber was internationally known as an anatomist, an excellent educator and the person that discovered the bronchopulmonary segmental subdivision of the lung's lobe. This discovery allowed for pulmonary resections of less than a lobe. 14 FAREWELL TO DR. SCHNECK Dr. Schneck graduated in 1959 and completed his internship in 1960. He returned to Temple, his home institution, as faculty. He taught gross anatomy, histology, embyrology and neuroanatomy all during his first year. At this time, he simultaneously pursued his PhD. In 1965, Dr. Schneck became the first person to receive a doctorate degree from the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. In 1974, he was promoted to full professor. He has won countless teaching awards including the first Alpha Omega Alpha Distinguished Teacher’s Award in basic science, the first Temple University Great Teacher Award, and of special note, the nation’s first Golden Apple. He stresses that the awards that come from his students mean that much more to him, “To receive an award from a national organization is not the same as receiving an award from the students I love.” Understandably, his recognition is well deserved. Outside of medicine, Dr. Schneck enjoys reading theology and gardening. He and his wife, Freda, married in 1956 after final exams. Raised half a block apart, they actually met at the end of high school, dated through college a and have been together ever since. They have two daughters; Deborah who received her BS and MBA from Temple, and Stephanie who received her BS and MD from Temple as well. In a recent reflection of his time at Temple, Dr. Schneck had the following to say: Temple, as they say, has been an amazing ride. Since my first day on campus 58 years ago, the school and its people have deeply imprinted my life. With my retirement comes a sense of awe for Temples myriad imprints. Imprints of time, events, teachers, students, colleagues, patients - imprints of a million varieties. Some that shaped us, some that have been shaped by us. I enjoy thinking about how these imprints will resonate out across time to influence people we will never even know and events and discoveries that we cannot even imagine. As a class, we thank him for his continued emphasis on our education, his supportive nature and for inspiring us through the world of microbiology. We congratulate him on his retirement. 1976-2012 Born jn Alabama with a keen interest in the sciences, Dr. Long was in a select group of students that participated in a countywide enrichment program. Dr. Long was exposed to a variety of possible scientific careers but what impressed him the most was a visit to the CDC’s Oatland Island research facility. With the encouragement of the CDC staff, he decided then that he wanted to become a microbiologist. Dr. Long attended the University of Georgia, where he graduated in 1966 with a B.S. in Bacteriology. He then earned his Ph.D. in virology from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1972. He continued to develop his expertise in virology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, where he was a postdoctoral fellow from 1972-1976. He came to Temple School of Dentistry in 1976. Dr. Long’s primary research focus has been on the role DNA methylation plays in Epstein-Barr virus latency and reactivation. He also became involved in the education of dental students. In 1985, Dr. Long took over the directorship of the Central Hybridoma Facility. He participated in numerous studies including the production of a library of monoclonal antibodies to HIV, a monoclonal antibody to inhibit neovascularization of tumors, and research to develop monoclonal antibodies directed against opioid receptors. Dr. Long transferred to the Medical School in 1986, but continued to participate in teaching virology and immunology to dental students until his retirement. In keeping with his dedication to teaching, Dr. Long took over leadership of the Microbiology and Immunology course at the medical school in 2000. His southern upbringing was reflected in his calm and orderly manner. He was patient with students and faculty alike. Dr. Long has always had the students’ best interests foremost in regard to all of his roles in teaching and curriculum reform. He was willing to take on administrators if he thought their plans for the curriculum were not educationally sound. Once changes were agreed upon, he worked tirelessly 30 RETIREMENT to implement the new programs. He was a true advocate for the students and cared deeply about student welfare. In all of his roles in course administration and teaching, he was a true professional. To those of us who have followed in his footsteps, he left his famous litmus test for dealing with any situation “What is best for the student?”. Dr. Long supported the students outside the classroom as well. One-year the second year medical students named their intramural team “Dr. Longshots”, much to Dr. Long’s delight. In his spare time Dr. Long enjoys the outdoors. He is an avid fisherman, camper and gardener. It is no surprise that he will be spending his time after retirement in a cabin he built in Georgia on a lake with plenty of good fishing. His parting words to the class of 2013 were, “I have enjoyed my association with your class and wish you a future filled with success, happiness and the satisfaction that comes with a career devoted to helping others ” Bettina Buttaro, PhD Toby Eisenstein, PhD udy retired from Temple on 9 30 2012, 38 years to the day that she started to work in the Dean’s Office of the School of Medicine. “I greatly appreciate all of the opportunities Temple gave me to advance in my career. I have met, worked with, and been mentored by wonderful people, many of whom I value as friends today. I hope that my efforts over the years have contributed positively to the School of Medicine and the University.” 1974-2012 For over twenty years, Judy was a professional singer, as a core member of The Philadelphia Singers, a member of the chorus of the Philadelphia Opera Company and mezzo-soprano soloist at The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Judy has a wonderful daughter, Jennifer and a grandson, Tony, “who is the light of our lives”. She is looking forward to enjoying retirement with her husband of 44 years, Lou. PA. We also continue to enjoy having the main campus students join us for their required and elective rotations. The Temple University School of Medicine Clinical Campus at West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) offers a stellar learning environment. The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, the first in the area to earn Magnet Recognition for excellence in nursing services, became the first and only hospital in the region to earn Magnet redesignation, on Sept. 14, 2012.
