PENNSYLVANIA 19140 orncf or nir dean October 31, 1977 TO THE CLASS OF 1978; You are entering the dental profession during a time of turmoil, unrest, and change. Dental insurance programs are proliferating rapidly, providing the opportunity to obtain dental services for millions who are unaccustomed to regular care. The very foundation of all of the professions is being challenged. Ethical values are being changed. It appears likely that advertising by dentists, physicians, and attorneys will become acceptable conduct. Cost and quality of services are being questioned and monitored. Individuals without any formal training are claiming the right to work directly for the public. Perhaps now more than ever, it is imperative that the members of the profession be prepared to defend the principles and practices which have brought dentistry to the position of respect which it enjoys today. You must get involved, participate in and support your professional organizations, while constantly maintaining the principles of professionalism and providing the highest quality services for your patients. To do so, you will have to continue to learn and to adapt to the changing profession and society. Congratulations, and sincere best wishes for a most satisfying and successful career. Dale F. Roeck, D.D.S. And he tells me, "Drill some more." Gently 1 apply the pressure. The round bur touches, slightly harder, dentin tubules, smaller fragments. Am I near the chamber door? The sweat upon my brow grows heavy, 1 fear the worst has yet to come. Where's the teacher that my light's for? Again he tells me, "Drill some more." My hands arc shaking as I press. Upon my high speed drill, I guess, Where the pulp will show up first. Am 1 near the chamber door? I flick the light and it shines on. I'm humming some unknown song, I knew before he came along. That I would have to Drill some more. Suddenly, my bur went slipping, In the hole some blood is seeping. Should I look, I do not dare. But look I did, the blood was there. Coming from the chamber door. The light comes on, and here he comes. And says that I am just all thumbs, To endo now, that's whats in store. Is the list each day of where we should, Stand lined up like good girls and boys. Waiting to get Christmas toys. "We need the chairs!" they shout and plead. Trying to achieve their needs. For patient who will cancel out. And fail to show, that's what it's about. So get up at five, come at six-o-nine. Only to see, that at that time. That you are twenty fifth on line. To get the chair that means so much, To give that crown its final touch. You can't depend, towards any end. That you will have a day to spend. Without your name on a list of fools. At least while you're in Dental School. Resign yourself to endless lines. You'll just have to make the time. To arrive and sign that endless list. And hope that with a clever twist.
