There was i feeling in the air that made it unlike the years mmediately preceding it. Students seemed more nterested in school activities. New clubs were ormed and old ones increased in membership. Students seemed more interested in classes and :lass work. The results of the North Central •valuation gave the entire Tempe High community i psychological boost with its findings of an utstanding program. There was a concerted effort o keep up with the technology explosion in both :urricular and extra-curricular activities. Nearly ;veryone was taking or planning to take a ;omputer class of some kind and a surprising lumber of students had computers at home. There v as a sense of urgency, a desire to get on with it, to :atch up with and then keep ahead of an ncreasingly faster moving world. Though students till worried about those less fortunate than themselves and the service clubs were very active, there seemed to be a more pragmatic view toward the world and its problems. People were concerned at even earlier ages about what they were going to do with their lives. The fighting in the Middle East and Central America, some of it causing casualties among American servicemen, was certainly sobering and of some concern. But those things were still far away for most of the Tempe High community and they didn’t seem to play much of a role in our every day lives. The athletic teams did as well or better than they had in several years. School spirit seemed to have been found again. Students and faculty were proud to be members of the Tempe High family and bragged about it. Perhaps the feeling was best expressed by Coach Glenn Alford at the football season’s first pep rally when he said, The Buffs are back!” And it seemed that he was right. What gives you an opportunity to show off, catch up on your sleep, finish your homework and get out of class? A pep rally at a school with an apathetic attitude. And Tempe High students had a reputation of being fans who rode with a winner and forgot a loser. Our primary spirit goal was to erase that reputation. Despite the hard work of many individuals and organizations, we nearly didn’t make it. Remember after the Marcos football game? There was hardly anyone at the next game against Saguaro. But the spirit groups stuck with it and we finally decided to hang in there with our teams, win or lose. Among the most spirited organizations were Pom and Cheer, who painted signs, decorated hallways and locker rooms, made spirit boxes and performed skits at pep rallies, and the Buff Band who was always there, always whooping it up, and always letting the world know that the Buffs had Spirit! The Buff Varsity bursts through a Cheer-constructed Runthrough' the beginning of the Corona game. Who will take us to lunch today?” is asked. Generally, one out of a group of several friends will know someone who has a car. Suddenly, all vehicles leaving the Mill Avenue parking lot look like sardine cans. For 35 minutes the students are transformed into free wheeling teenagers who are not worried about homework, tests or other tension causing problems that are part of the school day. They invade and take over nearby fast food outlets. Just being somewhere off campus is as much a part of the joy as is the eating of America’s favorite foods. After all, no one, but no one, eats on campus, particularly not in the cafeteria. That’s the place for freshmen and other underclass elements of the society. And after school we When the dismissal bell rang at the end of seventh hour, students scattered to the winds. Their destinations were almost as varied as were the colors of the clothes they wore. Many went home, particularly if they had to ride the bus. Others headed for after- school jobs. If they were out for an athletic team, they went to the gym for a quick change into a practice or game uniform. Many attended meetings of the clubs organized on campus. Some, worried about classroom problems, sought out teachers for extra help. A few participated in intramural sports such as racketball. During most of the year, there was generally a group practicing for a play, dance or music performance in the auditorium. And, there was always a handful of students waiting at curbside for mom or dad to come pick them up. The Buffalo Symphonic Band was one of four high school bands in the nation chosen by tape audition to play for the 37th Annual Mid-West National Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago from December 13 to December 18. Their playing before this prestigious group was outstanding and brought the audience to its feet in a standing ovation even before the conductor, Mr. Steve Peterson, could turn around. No other band at the clinic received such an immediate standing ovation. Band members spent the week practicing for their concert and sightseeing in cold, windy Chicago. They made many new friends and enjoyed a musical learning experience they will probably never be able to duplicate the rest of their lives. Senior Vernon Richardson responds happily and readily to questions about the Buff Band’s performance from two coeds from Evanston. Indiana. The Chicago skyline became a familiar sight to t Tempe High Band. It will always bring back memories snowy days and sub zero nights. 30 - Student Life Ski trip to Purgatory The Gnomes Ski Club went to Purgatory, Colorado, over the Christmas break. But everyone, freshman through senior, has to go somewhere. Nobody goes straight home! The underclassmen head for Peter Piper’s across the street. Upperclassmen disdain the pizza’s they had before they could drive and head down the block for Tony's and his “real Italian food.” Others drive to Snow or Paradice Cream, both a few miles away. If it’s on the weekend and there’s no dance, the upperclassmen head for the Riverbottom, the Tree, the Bikepath or wherever the party is. Some hardy souls who disdain sleep will head for the midnight movies. For the girls, boots and Keds in lots of colors made the scene. Many students showed up in hats or wearing buttons. In the warmer months, there were plenty of miniskirts and shorts. But the one thing still popular over the years was Levis. All in all, most people dressed very casually. Sophomore Leanne Espinoza and Senior Janice Coggins watch the basketball game. But the highlight of the year had to be the trip to Chicago where the band played for the Midwest Band and Orchestra Director's Convention. Not only did the members enjoy them- selves, but they brought great honor to Tempe High and the entire southwestern United States by being one of only four high school bands from throughout the nation selected to play at the convention. In order to get to Chicago, however, they had to raise a great deal of money. They held car washes, sold candy, sold newspaper subscrip- tions, held their annual cheese and sausage sale, and, of course, manned the concessions at ASU’s home games. The Band Boosters, a parents group, sold concessions at all THS home games and held a rummage sale. The Buffs even sponsored a Woody Herman concert to help provide the funds needed for the Chicago trip. X f- fTie Senior Class Council jmposing the elected members of the Senior Class Council were Neil Martin, esident; Lucia Austin, Girl’s Representative; Beckie Rupert, Secretary-Treasurer; a Johnson, Vice President; and Chip Wortlley, Boy’s Representative. Ah! Seniors at last! The class of ‘84 had reached the ultimate peak in their high school careers, for nothing surpasses a senior. The year was a year to top all. The seniors played a major part in Tempe High’s winning teams, active clubs and rowdy crowds. They set an example for future classes that will be passed down for many years to come. It took four long, hard years to reach this point but most all of them succeeded. The year went fast and before anyone had realized it, graduation, one of the most awaited events in high school, was upon us. Now, all the activities the seniors had contributed to, Homecoming, Senior Walk, Baccalureate, and all the homework, are nothing but memories. But the memories will always live on because, the class of '84 will never die. Daniel Aguilar In his TV Productions class. Wayne McCabe operates the video monitors for the THS News.
