Today we are faced with many challenges, choices and problems. These challenges are not much different from those faced by our parents and our grandparents. But the increasing complexity of our world has magnified the importance of our decisions. What we make of ourselves, the world around us, and our solutions to the problems we face depends to a great extent on how we handled the mini-problems of our early years, our school years. We have selected a number of challenges, choices and problems faced during the past year by students at Tempe High School. We have examined them throughtout this book. Reflect on how we met the challenges of: Dedication: many long hours were spent studying, practicing and perfecting skills, preparing us for the future. Individuality: each of us tried to find ourselves a to express that unique, 'one of a kind' person t each of us is. Communication: through a variety of words, soun gestures, looks, common interests and activities, attempted to let others know who we were, what felt, what we thought, and what we wanted. Involvement: active participation in the unique mi world that is Tempe High, whether it was holding our end of a discussion, doing our share in a assignment, joining a club of special interest to us, going to a game.. .we learned and grew by worki with one another. Sharing: we shared the ups and downs, the succes and failures, the joys and heartbreaks of our year learning and living 5 7 8 Communication 10 Sharing 15 The Future? Our future, like the crystal ball, is unclear. We are unsure of the road ahead. But we are certain that what we do will be a reflection of our years at Tempe High 16 TABLE OF CONTENTS HIGHLIGHTS . . Sports-107 INVOLVEMENT Nearly every student at Tempe High gets involved with some activity during his f years. The variety of options is nearly endless, encompassing everything from athlet and art to war gaming. Some special interests are spin-offs from classes in the curriculi such as language clubs or the Photography club. Other activities are not really clubs I are extensions of classes which interest students to the extent that they spend long ho outside of the classroom perfecting their skills and learning more about the subje Examples of this category of activity are the music groups, both instrumental and voi There are also the dance groups, the student publications, the Future Farmers of Am ica, the drama clubs, and the speech club. There are those activities to which interesi students are elected by their fellow students or by faculty and student committees st as student government, the Cheer lines and the Pom line. Activities aimed at helping student decide on a future career or to gain work experience while getting credit a getting paid include the Cooperative Office Education class (COE), the Home Econon Related Occupations class (HERO), and the Distributive Education Clubs of America c (DECA). There are those activities in which there is simply enough student interest gain a group of adherents who want to learn more about the subject. Examples of t type activity are the Ski club, the Backpacking club, the Chess club, the Science club, . the Bicycle club. And there are those clubs aimed at supporting athletic teams such the BasketBuffs, the Matmaids, the Striders, and the Mermiads. Each group spent m; hours in fund raising activities, selling candy or baked goods, washing cars, or sponsor dances. The money was used to further the organization's goals. But all of these types involvement had one thing in common. They were aimed at helping their memb increase their knowledge—to learn. 108-Involvement Student Council ent Council Secretary's Miriam Richardson and Sharon v instruct Mark Ellingson in an excutive board meeting. and Girls representatives: (I to r) First Row: Eddie Yue, Tennes ana Patty Thomas. HERO Involvement-141 CLASSES Classes are a dominate factor in a Tempe High stude life. From his entering day as a freshman, he is codified I: number representative of his class and he keeps that m ber, staying with the same group, throughout his f years. From being a scared, lost freshman learning wonders of the Mass Media and the intricacies of algel he moves up the social scale to become a mighty sop more. His classroom activities include Composition, C Expression, more math and probably the joy of dissectir frog in biology. He also lords it over the new crop of lo freshmen. As a junior, the student learns more ab American History than he ever thought possible, explc chemistry, advanced math, and works long hours to m the Junior-Senior Prom a success. Capping his stay Tempe High, the student becomes a mighty senior wh his class choices are greatly varied, government and e nomics being the only absolute requirements. And goes through all of the happy moments of measuring f cap and gown, attending the Prom as a guest, geti senioritis in the spring months, and finally graduat Throughout the entire four year span, he has grown, tured, and, sometimes surprising to himself, he has re learned about life in this world. 142-Classes Senior Honor Couples r DRESSED-Corinne Do- tuez MOST INTELLICENT-Marjie Laninga and Marc Patten MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED-Brian Fees and Pattie Eliason BEST DRESSED-Larry and Jerry Hill Classes-143 MOST SPIRITED-Patti Thomas and John Stephens 144-Classcs LOOKING LEGS-Todd Nelson and Anna Kniei BIGGEST APPETITE-Dennis Ehasz ST LIKELY TO GET MARRIED-Rosa Alvarez BIGGEST APPETITE-Terry Boswell Tim Cranny Classes-145 MOST MUSICALLY INCLINED-Terry Boswell MOST ATHLETIC-Pat Smith and Marc Daniels MOST ELIGIBLE-Michelle Rozell MOST ELIGIBLE-Don Westfall 146-Classes Seniors Senior Class Council. And, unfor- tunately for school yearbook editors, some things take place after a particular section in which they should have appeared has gone to the printer. In order to record some of these events, we have inserted this section which is somewhat of a melange of everything. Stu- dents work off campus, both as part of orga- nized groups from the campus and on their own. In terms of occupations, office work and food service jobs are clearly the most popular among students, probably because such occu- pations are the most plentiful. Some students are involved in an Intern program, working with professionals in many occupations to decide if that is what they want to do with their lives. Other students are volunteers, helping those less fortunate than themselves. And the process of learning, both formally and informally, con- tinues. Potpourri-225 Senior Mike Bray is being measured for his graduation cap by Grace Jones from the supplying firm. Sophomore, Kim Brunson was one of many students from Tempe High who worked part time at Monti's La Casa Vieja. Through the HERO program. Senior Becky Radar worked as a teacher at McKemy. 226-Potpourri As part of the Professional Internship program. Kirk Thornhill also volunteered to be a blood donor. 234-Potpourri FACULTY Students at Tempe High spend hours each day being influ- enced by a wide variety of people we neatly label as teach- ers or faculty . Tempe's faculty is large and diverse, both in age and experience. There is little turnover among them, with the school adding about a half dozen new teachers each year to replace the few who have retired or quit. Teachers are supposed to spend at least eight hours each day at school but find the time runs closer to ten or more. They spend countless hours preparing lesson plans and teaching aids, in composing and then grading tests, in giving individual help to students who are having trouble. They sponsor each of the wide variety of clubs and activities available to Tempe High's students. They attend meetings, go to night school to improve themselves, and participate in regular community activities as good citizens. They are here to help students learn but most will admit that they learn as much from the students as the students learn from them.
