{SCHOOL DAYS} PROPHECY Pre-reading my diary for 1950, I was much surprised to find an acco nt of a trip that I took in 1948 from New York to California. Some extracts follow: First Day 7e took off hy plane piloted by Alvira Bartels at 10 a.m. Had an interesting talk with Gertrude Cummings famous manufacturer of high-heeled shoes for men, and ate some ice cream from Doris Jane McCandless’s Ice Cream Factory. I landed in Chicago in time for lunch at Frances Moller’s quainte cafe made in the shape of a tooth, whose bouncer vm3 the famous strong woman, Dorothy Pope. I decided to stay over nxght, when I saw In the Chicago Paper, edited by Gilbert Pearson, that the Seward-Buethe toe-dancing troop was to appear at the “Chief Tecumseh Theatre owned by Myrtle Murphy. Another feature was George Bramman, famous for .juggling ten plates on the end of his nose. Second Day My hair was waved by the famous flying beautician, Norma Lillicb, on my way to Omaha in one of Margaret Scoville's private planes. Wandering around after lunch In Omaha, I found a bird 3hop -where Verna Miller taught the canaries to type by hopping from one key to the other. Investigating a book shop that had a huge sign by the international poster painter, Margaret Gardner, I discovered that it was .-jointly owned by LaVerne 01mstead and Ellen Lane who specialised in “Big-Little Books. Third Day- Idling away my time on the way to Salt Lake City, I thumbed through Life now edited by Vernon Kreps. In a prominent part of the magazine were pictures, by Arnold Hedges, of the international golf meet, won by Viola Elenga. This blew to bits the prediction of Paul Anderson, noted golf authority, That women cannot play golf! “ On the same pages were pictures of Margaret Ann Sullivan who recently took all honors of marksmanship, in the International Gun Meeting. t % -EbE-t
