4 VALEDICTORY Thus year marks a mllestone ln the llves of thls Class of 1942 At last we are to be emanclpated from the controlllng mfluence of our parents and teachers, abruptly we are left to our own lnltlatxve ours the responslblllty of maklng and preservlng a better world Terrlfvlng as thls prospect must appear to many of us, we are not totally wlthout the assets to cope wlth lt successfully In our four years at Tech, we have enyoved the prerogative of gamma a profuslon of knowledge, cultural as well as practlcal In addltlon, through our relatlons wlth our classmates and teachers, we have learned to properly appralse those human characterlstlcs of honor, truth, loyalty, and fa1r play, whlch, more than any amount of educatlon, serve to make one truly a man, worthy of the blessmgs of llberty and opportunlty bestowed by thls country Thus armed wxth our ambltlons, knowledge, and ldeals, we strlde forth to take our place nn the world But we find that thls IS a world ln whlch our ldeals and our way of llfe are serlously threatened wlth eradlcatlon by those who cannot achleve thelr greedv ends whlle Amerlca exlsts as the llvlng example of those ideals Our Hrst duty , therefore, IS to defend our way of llfe for ourselves Many, no doubt, wlll feel that thelr dutv can best be performed bv actual service ln Amerxca s armed forces The large majorlty however, wlll comprlse the vast army behlnd the army the thousands of cngmeers, chemlsts, deslgners, electrlclans, machmlsts, and other vltal workers, upon whom the soldler and the country depend Fmally , there wlll be those who wlll contmue thelr educa tlon, that they may undertake the dlrectlon of the reshaping of the postwar world So now we, the Class of 1942 bxd farewell to Tech, to our classmates, to our teachers, whose lndefatlgable efforts have gulded us to where we stand today May we justify thelr altrulstlc en deavors by succeedlng, ln some measure, to gamfully employ that education of mmd and Splflt whlch has here been mstllled into us, ln the servnce of our country and of mankmd May we always remember that to find honesty, courage, decency , and happiness ln llfe, we must put them lnto llfe ourselves And may we always be loyal to Tech, our Alma Mater, even as we are to our country' Chester W Marynowskl .,' .. 1 O and our posterity. . . . . . , . . 1 . .
