This year's eouneil has submitted a very active and interesting program typical of Tech Seni- ors. To provide funds for Class Day and to meet other various expenses the Senior Class sponsored its annual skating party on January 26, at Scott's Roller Rink. The Class Day exercises were held on the afternoon of Nlay twenty-seventh in the school auditorium with the traditional ceremonies. This was followed by a farewell banquet at the Consistory. The Senior Class wishes to pay tribute to those advisers, Mr. Dry, Miss Schultz, Nliss llerlihy, Mrs. Brooks, Miss Flavin, and Mr. Andrus who were instrumental in our successes. We, the Senior Class of 1942, would like to extend our hearty thanks to them for their generous efforts. We hope to repay Technical lligh School for the many opportunities for development given us. We have been very proud of our record and we shall continue to do our best for Tech. The executive council with the help of its adviser plans the yearly program. 'Ks usual, the Tech social season was opened with the Fifth Year skating party held at Skateland on November 2 l. Viiith the skating party and a sleigh ride behind them. the class looked forward to the presentation of its assembly program, annual banquet. and possibly a Graduates' Prom. A majority of the Fifth Year Class has been represented on the honor roll as well as in extra- curricular activities. They have been active in athletics. school affairs ami fraternal organizations. In addition every fifth year man has a chanee to speak before an assembly. This opportunity is made possible through our announcement system. The Fifth Year Class has wholeheartedly supported the school newspaper and the motion picture fund. ln addition to presenting a generous cheek the class has contributed to this fund by helping with the collection of money during the free movie shows. The United States is at war and is fighting those totalitarian states that threaten to engulf us. The fifth year class is determined to do its part. Nlany of us will join the colors or obtain vital positions in our nations' war effort upon graduation this June. Lintil then. we serve our country by purchasing national defense stamps and bonds. The fifth year class gratefully acknowledges the kind cooperation of its adviser, 'lliss llelcn Flayin, who has guided us through this our last and happiest year at Teehnieal. Anthony Anthony The Tech Senior Hi-Y, affiliated with the national and international Hi-Y movement, boasts of one of the largest memberships of any club in the school. With other Hi-Y groups throughout the country, we pledge to supplort the following creed: I will seek to create, maintain and extend high standards of Christian c aracter throughout my school and communityf, Seeking to combine the intellectual, social and physical sides of its members, our club has enjoyed an unusually successful year. Again this year the Tech Senior Hi-Y was represented at the State Hi-Y Convention which was held in Albany and again at the Older Boy's Conference which was held in Olean. Our club was also active in Hi-Y Day in Buffalo. With a variety of speakers, including Reverend William H. Horner, Mr. Harry W. Large, and. Mr. Norman Ludlow, the club was kept abreast of developments in national and internation- al situations. We especially enjoyed Mr. Large's address which was entitled Parliamentary Proce- durev. This year the Tech Senior Hi-Ycelebrated its 35th anniversary by holding Anniversary Week with an assembly, a faculty and alumni banquet, and a dance, which were held on various days throughout Anniversary Week . The inauguration of a Father and Son Banquet has established a precedent which we hope all future Tech Hi-Y clubs will follow. Swimming, semi-monthly gymnastic periods and inter-club basketball games with other clubs constitute our athletic program. - It is doubtful whether much can be said or written about the Tech Senior Hi-Y without men- tioning our counselor and friend. Mr. Wallace W. Shaw. To him we wish to express our gratitude. , - I 5 1 ' V hr, :df 3 5 if 9, 2, , , M! '3'f Qfff-'Q W- f 1 ,-. Yiigf Y .. 'EN of sk.. F U' iQ C639 Row 4. J. Gruber, F. Rechin, W. We have, however, continued our week- ly meetings and kept our thirty odd members interested. Talks have been delivered by Mr. Bens- man and Mr. Ranney on subjects of interest to electrical students. Highlight of our social activities for the year was our induction banquet, held at MacD0el's Restaurant. We wish to express to Mr. Bensman, our faculty adviser, our sincere appreciation for his patience and assistance during the past year. Our organization is open to all Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Fifth Year students in the electrical course. New members are admitted at the beginning of each term. The objective of the society is to keep abreast of industrial development of machines, through plant visits Ccurbed in '41-'42 due to defense programj, films, speakers from industry and by subscription to Machinery and other appropriate technical hooks. In addition the club main- tains a social program consisting of bowling and skating parties, basketball games and picnicing. This organization takes particular pains to sponsor a good assembly program by obtaining either a unique sound film or an outstanding speaker or both. Un January 13, we had the honor of being the first society to use Tech's new 16 mm. sound projector, when Bridging San Francisco Bay was shown. The film was outstanding as it showed one of the greatest bridge construction feats in the world. The club's annual contribution was made toward the purchase of the projector. Our society arranged for a skating party in April, several more bowling parties and a picnic for the remainder of its activities. The Machine Design Club is active not only in school, but out of school. The 1941 member- ship organized a passive chapter which meets monthly under the leadership of Mr. Charles Mcfllartin The purpose of the club is to continue the friendship, started at Tech, through the medium of social gatherings held at each of the member's home. The purpose of the society was, at first., to promote interest in debate within the school, but recently it has become an organization for the purpose of promoting good fellowship among the students. A number of the present students participate in Tech's Varsity Debates. The highlight of the past year's activity was the fourteenth annual Freshman-Sophomore Debate. The topic for discussion was Resolved that several states abandon the jury system . The Freshman team emerged victorious with a score of 2 to l. Delta Chi presented a silver loving 1-up to the victors. The primary purpose of Delta Chi in the sponsoring of these debates is to discover and develop future varsity debate talent. Instead of holding meetings at school we hold semi-monthly meetings in the homes of mem- bers. Wve have had many such gatherings and there are more in prospect for the spring season. Since we were so treacherously attacked and forced into hostilities against the Axis powers, the club has been looking for some way to help the country in its time of need. Our way was made clear when Secretary of the Nav y Frank Knox announced that the navy needs thousands of models of all the present day war-planes to he used for altitude estimation in anti-aircraft target practice and to familiarize civilian aircraft spotters with the different types of planes. The Aeronautical Society is looking forward to taking an active part in this campaign to make these models. The club is looking forward to continued success in the coming year, and the members express their sincere gratitude to Mr. May, their active and interested adviser. fi' Row 2. E. Szymanski, S. We have accepted the challenge and will strive to uphold Tech's honor on the chessboard. Negotiations are also underway for a meeting with Burgard High School players. Our faculty adviser, Mr. Ernest Zeferjahn, is an ardent devotee of the game and a player of high caliber. To him we express our appreciation for his helpful and friendly counsel throughout the year. May the Tech Chess Club continue to benefit from his guidance in the future. Mr. Harold Owen, W8CHX Amateur radio operation has come to mean much to the national defense effort. Amateur radio operators are filling the great demands for experienced communications officers in the armed forces of America while other amateurs have been and are now ready to act as emergency communi- cations officials using ultra-high frequency radio equipment for this purpose. The T.A.R.A. is serving too. Here at Tech, the club had established its station, W8VXN and did, until the outbreak of the war, operate its equipment regularly on the 75 meter ,phone band. The members of the T.A.R.A. are being trained at present in reception and sending of code signals and in elementary radio theory, so that soon they may pass the F.C.C. amateur operator examina- tions and stand ready to aid our country. At present, much experimentation is being done on a low frequency, wired, emergency com- munications systcm for the school. This system will be put to use during emergencies when the regu- lar communication lines are not usable in the school. The T.A.R.A. which is a member of the American Radio Relay League, meets every Thursday in Room 10 which has been recently remodeled to facilitate greater operation flexibility for both amateur operation and instruction classes. Our deepest gratitude goes to Mr. Owen, our adviser. for his excellent guidance and his part in furthering the interests of the club. Row 3. R Belles D. Kobcmuss, J Gilmour, M. On several occasions we have gone skating as a group at the various skating rinks. We have purchased skating shirts for the members and held meetings after school each Friday. In the future we plan to hold these group skating parties every other week. We also plan to purchase an official club insignia to identify club members who do not wish to purchase a skating shirt. Irving Chriswell In 1934 the Tech Astronomical Society was founded by a small group of students, who could foresee the advantages a club of this type would offer to others interested in exchanging information on the fascinating subject of astronomy. Since that date, there have been many advances. The first of these was the construction of our six-inch reflecting telescope. Through the generous co-operation of Mr. John W. Greenwood, former head of the mathematics department of Tech, we were able to place the instrument. on his estate, where it became available to all the members. This year a new foundation has been made within the city limits. Each year itihas been our aim to include lectures by the members. In former years sky charts and models of ancient instruments, were constructed. by the members. This year the society, has undertaken and successfully fabricated, a scale model of the giant two hundred inch telescope, put into operation on Mt. Palomar, in California. Films entitled Sun and Moon . Planets, Asteroids and Comets. The Wvorldis Largest Telescope Reflector, were the main feature of our annual assembly. on April 17 of this year. Dr. Chriswell, for his unflagging interest and guidance. in making our club one of which to be proud. 8 BAND 'I941-42 As usual, the Tech Band headed the procession which marched to the All-High Stadium at the opening ofthe football season. The band also played at all succeeding games in which the school was represented and did its part in backing up the spirit of the team and student body throughout this most successful season. In addition to the music supplied by the regular band for assembly programs, volunteer members were active in playing at all home basketball games. The band also aided the Tech exhibit by entertaining visitors in the auditorium. The band members, though looking forward to the annual Spring Concert and the Band picnic, are sorry that these events will mark the close of this enjoyable season. Members of the Tech Band hope that they and other musical organizations will continue to be able to benefit the school during this time of stress. Although winning nine' of the last ten games, Tech finished one game short of the cup. The team proved itself of championship caliber bv defeating the Champ- ions, liast and Seneca, with whom we were tied for second. A truly determined and fighting team, in many of the games it overcame early deficits, by fighting till the gun to win. ' The teanfs fine showing can be attributed to the excellent coaching of Mr. Thayer, a former Tech player. While losing early in the season, he never lost faith in the team, but worked harder, encouraged them on and the result is evident. Hr. Thayer was able to give valuable advice from his play ing experience. and proved he still could play by tossing the ball through the baskets better than any member of the team. We are grateful to him for his untiring efforts and wish him better teams and the Yale trophy in the future. To Tech went the honor of havinff the leavue's to J ierformer, in its ca xtain, Len Serfustini. s s I I lle was the unammous choice, at center, on all All Ili h teams, and was named as the lf'2iUllC,S most Q s aggressive player and most efficient operator on the backboards. The team's lngh scorer. he finished fifth in the league race. His great playing was the big factor in our success, and he will be hard to replace. Bill Hudick was the same hard playing, very quiet and modest athlete as before. klthough he specialized ln setting up plays for his team mates, he did score enough to finish seventh in the league standings. Most of his points came on foul shots, his fifty-six for the season established a league rec- ord. ln the Bennett game, for the first time Hill was shooting and was out to score, for we were be- hind and our high scorers were tied up. :Ks a result he scored twenty-six points. one short of the record and led the team to an easy win. Rudick has been a great performer in football, basketball and base- ball for four years, and the school will lose one of its best athletes when he leaves. Doyle Daughtry. was the short, speedy fellow, who on many an occasion has made the fans chuckle as he outjumped opponents who lowered over him. A great set shot, Doyle will be a star player and scorer next year. if he shoots more. The fellow who loves to score baskets the hard way was, ofcourse, Henry Sackman. Very deceptive, Ceven his teammates wondered what he was going to doj, Henry could be counted upon to score the games most spectacular baskets. Dennis Kieffer, was the only one who knew what to expect. and together they made a great combination, scoring many a thrilling basket. Kieffer is a good shot, and on several occasions introduced, football into tl1e game, by piling on top of any op- ponent who fell to the floor. Joe Zoldaz. is another quiet fellow, a good shot and most efficient at setting up plays. johnny Klawitter was the big fellow no one wanted to check as he came a pounding down the court. The teanfs veteran athlete, Nick Yalvo. completed his fifth year of basketball, working harder than ever. His loyalty to the school is unparalleled, and we are sorry this is his last year. Always willing to help. Nick has been a great sport despite the heckling he has taken about his car, which got many of the players to the games. For Robert Michaels we predict a great season next year. Fast and clever, he has basketball sense. NX e look forward to much from Joe Jamieson and Paulie Poliachik next year: Kennedy and ,Ierman are other good prospects. NY e wish to thank Ciachini, Perillo and Yeager who although they were unable to play this year, helped and supported the team. John Blelisz, Blanager C915 S0151 'N CX , . . H11 fN1ar1'11 31.
