Hilliker Through thirty-four years spent in the classroom she endeavored to apply the educational goals, teach the worth of life and plain the necessity for knowl- edge to a cosmopolitan group of students. In the long years of depression, wars, and the advent of the atomic age, obstacles often arose which might have dis- mayed a less intrepid spirit. Dauntless she was in battle for the rights of teachers; concern was hers for those decisions arising in public life which affected the profession. Her most vigorous oratory came in a crisis. She was a pioneer, a champion worthy of respect. The indifference and laissez-faire attitude of the public toward the plight of teachers brought forth a cogent response from her. Striving to enlighten and nourish the youth of this city she took on a distinctive role. The worth of a teacher comes not by social approval or statistical success, but from a personal union with the pupils who comprehend and recognize the author- ity of the individual whom they regard as The Teacher. In her, students found a living symbol of the teaching art and a source of wisdom, inspiration and courage. In retirement she has left behind her the fulfillment of an especial career which brought to multitudes in every walk of life material assistance and perception which can not be measured but only appreciated. So with Ovid one might conclude The end crowns the work. ” School Life ¢ oe Harvest Dance On November 17 a combined dance sponsored by the Student Council and Red Cross Council was held. The highlight of the night was the crowning of the Harvest Queen, Patricia Spagna. The members of her court were Suzanne Gagne, Jo-Anne Yvon, Bonnie Blair, Darlene Willette, and Lillian Anton. The music was provided by Burt Mason and his orchestra. Thanks goes out to Miss Bogass and everyone who helped with the dance. Assemblies Assemblies are held frequently during the school year. Each one is of some importance and value to the students. They are held to inform, honor, and many times just for pleasure. Often outside speakers will come to talk to the Tech student body. Everyone looks forward to the an- nual Memorial Day assembly. Other assemblies include the Sports Awards Assembly, the Spell- ing Bee, and the all important Awards Assembly, which credits people in all areas of school life. Games are an important part of the Tech school year. There are numerous kinds of games, ranging from chess to football and including soccer, hockey, baseball, crew, bowling, golf, wrestling, tennis, and basketball. Football seems to be the favorite among the stu- dents. Large crowds can always be seen at all the games and with them they bring their Tech spirit. Rallies Tech spirit rages at our rallies. The band swings, the cheer- leaders cheer, and everyone yells. Although our first rally is held before the first home game, the Cathedral rally is the most exciting and exuberant. At this time, “Go, go, beatum, beatum”, can be _ heard throughout the schools. Teachers leave the rallies with ringing ears and crushed toes while every student leaves with a hoot and a smile. Concerts Two concerts are presented each year by the band which is directed by Mr. Myers and the chorus and Concert Choir, under Mr. Murphy. The first is the Christmas Concert which spot- lights both religious and popular music. In April the Spring Concert presents a wide variety of music to appeal to all tastes. These two events have become popular traditions at Tech. At the end of the year the band and the choruses per- form at graduation. 11 Science Fair The annual Tech High Science Fair took place on March 16 and March 17. This year’s Fair was under direction of Mr. Curran, chairman of the Science De- partment, and Mr. Hopkins, chairman of the event. The judges included teachers from schools in the Springfield area, who select- ed winners in each of the five categories. Timid and shy we scurried by the many senior hats. It wasn’t long before we elected our Student Council members and class officers. Bob Doleva was chosen President, with Chris Mac- Innes as Vice President, Bill Lynch as Treasurer and Sandy Cote as Secretary. As the year went on, we realized that we too were contributing to the Spirit of Tech. After our summer vacation we returned to Tech, just a little more self-confident. This ye ar leading us was Bob Doleva, again President; Mary Corbin, Vice President; Jane Somers, Treasurer; and Sandy Cote, Secretary. In December, we ordered our class rings not knowing that we were in for a long wait. Well. . . it was March before we were waving our hands around the halls of Tech. On April 28, we held our junior dance “April Showers”. The decor- ations were beautiful, thanks to Miss Bogacz, and we won’t talk about the large crowd. . .? College boards had finally come. On Saturday, May 6, some of us stayed at the school for six hours. This year was a great year for our athletic teams. We were State Soccer Champs, Western-Mass. Champs in Hockey and Wrestling, City Baseball Champs and our football team beat you know who! Here again another great year was coming to an end. Many of our friends were graduating and we would be the upperclassmen. This year when we came from vacation we were wearing the hats. We were the Seniors! For many of us, our years at Tech have been the best years of our lives. Before long, our prom, banquet, and graduation will have come and gone. We will no longer walk the halls of Tech. Many of us will go on to college and many to work, but for all of us will be memories of the Spirit of Tech. 111 112 Candids Junior Log Richard Valarose Vice-President Jim Broderick President Class Council Standing—Bonnie Blair, Cathy Smith, Paul Rasid, Carol Wilk, Pat Sawyer, and Ken Davies. 114 Class Advisors Mr. Donati, Miss Murray, Miss Borner, Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Savoia.
