Yes, the class of '67 had arrived. We had come to fulfill our required three years of high school education. Some will just get through by the skin of their teeth; others will do themselves proud by gaining scholastic honors. Some will sit back and let the world go by, others will be swept along by a thing called ‘school spirit.’ But in this assembling of seemingly lost newcomers, it is hard to say who will be who. Only the next three years will tell that story. Our freshman year proved itself a prosperous one, if for no other rea- son than just that of giving us a feeling of belonging. The elections of Student Council members offered us our first opportunity to act as a student body. Of course, we did not know all of the candidates personally, and so we voted about as democratically as we could. If you were a girl, you probably voted for the best looking guy running, or perhaps you voted for the candidate who promised a dance a week and music piped into the lunchroom. What ever the reason, though, as a freshman class we did not do too badly. We had a high percentage of S.A. and almost succeeded in crowning a freshman as Red Cross Queen, an event that up until then had been unheard of. Tech Tan- trums came and went, leaving us in a state of awe as to how Mr. Mur- phy, Mr. Meyers, and Mr. Karavestos could be such ‘good guys’ all year, but turn into such ‘slave drivers’ (if you’ll excuse the expression) during these few weeks. But, as usual, Tantrums '65 was a great success and a source of pride to all. We all looked forward to next year when we might be able to take a more active part in its produc- tion. Our freshman year was a good one for the entire school, sports-wise. Our baseball, soccer, hockey, cross-country, and wrestling teams competed in Western Mass. Tournaments. Our football team did a fine job of overcoming our rival (whose name at this time may as well go unmentioned, right?) Possibly, though we as freshman added very little in the way of contributions to these victories, they gave us all a feeling of pride and a source of inspiration toward our next years at Tech. It was September, 1965, and back we came, over 600 strong, as the Junior Class. Many of us realized what we had missed during the previous year, and now we were anxious to ‘get in with the swing of things.’ We had grown to full awareness of the fact that we must con- tribute if we expect to be on the receiving end of the rewards. Our first major event was the purchasing of our class rings. Oh, what a glorious day that was when the juniors made such a point of waving their right hands around for all to notice. But the glory of that day soon lost ares ¥ yi ee WAS Se en ‘ EN . em i eli a ee may ee SO ee me A AROS some of its glitter with the threat of approaching National Merit Tests, P.S.A.T.'s, and last but not least, college boards. The counselors advised us as to the importance of our futures and continually stressed the fact that if we planned to make anything of ourselves, we had better get started NOW. Near the close of our second year, we chose to lead us as reigning seniors, two members of the band. We selected our class colors of cranberry and white, and our class banner, which would be left behind as a remnant of the Class of '67 when we had at last departed from these ‘hallowed halls.’ We were set for another year, we all hoped it would be a prosperous one. Although glad to have a vacation, most of us must admittingly confess that we greatly anticipated the return to school and the events that would follow. It is now 1966, and we the Class of '67 have come to the ‘beginning of the end’. For many of us it will be a rough year. There will be deci- sions of great importance to be made concerning our futures, but we will be able to make them wisely and after careful consideration because for the past two years we have gained knowledge and maturi- ty at Tech. Our counselors and teachers have praised and reprimand- ed us, but even more, they have guided us. The past two years have been fun, exciting, and beneficial. Now we are in our final year, the Senior Prom and banquet, and then graduation will be here before we realize where the year has gone. Will we let the year slip by, or will the time between now and June be filled with excitement, fun, and benefits? It is up to us, the C lass of '67. On Friday, March 25, the 5 winners of the individual awards of the Science Fair were announced by Mr. Herbert Northrup. Two cash awards were also made. Commenting about leaving Tech, Mrs. Taback- man had the following to say; ‘‘l have had the satisfaction of working with and helping many fine students. Their success in college has been a source of gratification to me. Many who did not go beyond Tech have achieved success in their work and have often visited me to tell me about their achievements. The many genuine friendships | have formed over the tears with my colleagues and students | shall always treasure, and | shall always consider it an honor to have been a member of the Tech family.”’ As Tech students, we also regard it an honor to have had the opportunity to study under such a wonderful person and a great teacher. Studley 4 cs z 3 The Air Force Comes to Tech —————____4-— a ks [am U.S. AIR FORCE 47 In the fall the 1966 Air Force ROTC celebrated its 20th anniversary on collegiate campuses across the nation. Concurrently, the Air Force became a partner in a new ROTC pro- gram—this time in secondary schools. This new program is known as Air Force JUNIOR ROTC. Although the Army has long offered ROTC at the high school level, the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 enabled the Navy and the Air Force to introduce their own programs into certain selected high schools. Tech was one of the original ten high schools selected; the first in New England. Biddeford, Maine was in the first twenty. To be eligible a school had to: 1. Demonstrate an interest in aerospace ed- ucation. 2. Be within a reasonable distance of an Air Force installation, Westover in the case of Tech. 3. Be a secondary school that does not offer the JUNIOR ROTC program of another service. 4. Have a male enrollment of 100 students of 14 years of age. Retired officers and Non-Commissioned officers have been selected as instructors. They must have served a minimum of 20 years active duty. The officer must have at least a baccalaureate degree, have had ex- perience as an instructor, and be a gradu- ate of at least one of the Air Force profes- sional officer schools. Retired NCO-instruc- tors normally serve as classroom assistants, instructing in the curriculum areas where they have a particular competence. Al- though not mandatory that they have col- lege degrees, they are required to have high school diplomas and should have experi- ence as instructors. They must also meet ail school requirements for their particular duties. A fully accredited program, Air Force Junior ROTC basically a three-year program, has a fourth year added when offered by the mili- tary high school. ie SRS ms PAs 48 As planned by the Air Force, primary con- centration in Air Force ROTC is an aerospace education not vocational training. The cur- riculum is designed to make a substantial contribution to the total academic offering of the school. An important purpose is to enable the high school student to become a better informed citizen on matters dealing with designed to cover all important aspects of aviation and space. Primary emphasis is on important elements of the physical, nat- ural, and social sciences within the frame- work of aerospace education. Air Force Ju- nior ROTC is intended to develop leadership traits in its participants and to acquaint them with the problems of national defense. It is designed to promote habits of orderli- ness, self-reliance and self-discipline. ‘‘Aerospace Education’’ is the title applied to the classroom portion of the program. In the first year, normally taught at the 10th grade level, the student begins with a course entitled ‘Introduction to Aerospace.”’ It deals largely with aerospace pioneers and equipment, and a general preparation for studying aerospace principles and operation. During the second year, in ‘‘Elements of Aerospace,”’ the student acquires a knowl- edge of the principles of flight, propulsion, navigation, and other fundamentals. He learns about the people presently involved in aerospace operations and how the mili- tary professional fits into American life. In his final year, in the non-military high school, such as Tech, he studies ‘‘Aerospace Leadership.’’ Here he learns more about aerospace operations, the necessity for aerospace power, and the importance of leadership in aerospace. He also studies the principles of leadership, especially the fun- damental of working with people. Fifty more schools will offer the Air Force Junior ROTC program next fall. By 1971 a total of 275 secondary schools across the nation will offer its courses. ; : : : ; i | Warner Each year two deserving and outstanding seniors are selected by the Alumni Association to receive the Charles F. Warner Achievement Medal presented in honor of our first principal. The recipients are chosen by thirty-five members of the faculty and student body for four qualities: scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and personality. George Eliopoulos, son of Mr. and Mrs. Miltiapes Eliopoulos of 17 Beaumont Terrace, has been selected as one of the two recipi- ents of the Charles F. Warner Achievement Medal for 1967. George ranks first in a class of six hundred eighty-six. Dur- ing this past year George served as president of the Student Council. George is a member of the band; National Honor Soci- ety; Math Club; Math Team; French Club; Computer Club; and Crew Team. George has participated in the Science Fair, the Spring Concert, and the Western Massachusetts Festival. This year he was a Westinghouse Science Finalist and a National Mer- it Finalist. Congratulations George! 50 Achievement Patricia Chisholm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Chisholm, has been selected as the girl’s recipient of the award. Pat’s rank is seventeenth in the senior class. She has received the D. A. R. Citizenship Award, and has served as both President and corre- sponding secretary of the Red Cross Council. Pat is a member of the National Honor Society; Concert Choir; Senior Hat Committee; Will, Ballot, Prophecy Committee, and Dance Committee. She has participated in Tech Tantrums, Spring Concerts, and the Graduation Choir. Pat was the chair- man of the Freshman Welcoming Committee. David Pallotta John Ruscio Kathy Mallett Gail Hogan Senior Log As the class of '67, our first official act was the election of our class leaders. Serving as President was: Paul O’Connor; Vice-President; Chris Irzyk; Secretary; Cynthia Butler; and as Treasurer; Karin Engley. Our junior year saw an entirely new slate of officers with the election, of Chris Ir- zyk, George Eliopoulos, Nancy Cummings, and Gail Hogan. We received our class rings in January, and in April our Junior Prom, ‘‘Hearts and Flowers’’ was a moderate success. As seniors, led by Dave Palotta, John Ruscio, Kathy Mallett, and Gail Hogan, we looked forward to our Senior Prom and Banquet, and finally graduation of our class of ’67. 102 Class Advisors Mr. Cummings, Mrs. Jones, Mr. Kennedy Class Council First Row: L. The Student Council’s senior Class Will We, the class of 1967, being sane in mind and sound in body but fully aware of the precariousness and uncertainty of this threshold on which we now stand, do leave this, our LAST will and testament, declaring as of this moment all other wills null, void, and invalid in the eyes of God, man, Mr. Gifford, and anyone else who might see fit to raise an objection. . Bart O’Connor leaves his muscles to some 90-Ib. freshman boy. . Heather Duncan leaves her natural blond- ness to the junior girls, so that the makers of peroxide will go out of business. . The seniors in band leave the Kick Step to next year’s Cross Country team. . The ‘‘Top 5” leave Mr. Moriarty and Mr. Snow the time to budget % of a term paper. . French IV. leaves Miss Roy seventeen rules for forming the subjunctive. . Gail Hogan leaves Tech as the only girl in the entire senior class who was brave enough to enroll in the once all-boy mechanical class. . Nina Laurie and Vito Gramarosso leave Tech— together. leave Mr. Sheehan high hopes and a copy of an empty ad book. . Denise Prairie and Don Franco leave Mr. Murphy a copy of West Side Story and 3 bro- ken notes. The senior girls bequeath what few mirrors there are to the uninitiated freshman girls hoping they won't get an inferiority complex from them. We, the class as a whole, leave our strong di- gestive systems to the tender incoming freshmen who have not as yet been treated to the products of Tech’s lunchroom. The girls in Mr. Sprague’s third period class willingly leave their seats to any class willing to listen to Mr. Sprague’s jokes. Because George Eliopoulous has scholastical- ly equalled the rank set by Steve Donnelly '66 and Walter Wolnik '65, the class of 1967 leaves it to any junior boy who can even come close—any takers? 105 14. Mr. Moriarty’s homeroom leaves the broken plate glass window from the door to the Art department for use in mosaics. Henry Thomas leaves his worn football shoes to next year’s team and a 100 yard dash to the track team. Ron Prior leaves his latest book, ‘‘How to Be- come a Politician in 10 Easy Lessons. ’ The basketball team leaves ‘‘Soapy’’ Sprague their uniforms and three cups of detergent with the time-worn advice “If at first you don’t succeed—try, try, again.” The Senior members of JETS leave Mr. Bud- dington fifty plans for science trips (during school time.) Mr. Burns and the junior members of the soccer team a state championship—with the admonition—‘‘Get out and earn it.” Calculus Il leaves Mr. Woodworth 87 rules for differentiation, 229 rules for integration, and 27 volumes of revolution. Cindy Butler leaves the Yearbook deadlines to anyone who wants them. The seniors on the make-up committee leave to next year’s Boy’s Chorus Line 12 dozen tubes of indelible lipstick. An annual assembly at Tech is the Memorial Day assembly. Assemblies are a main part of the school life here at Tech. 136 Beat Cathedral Dance On November 10th, we held our first dance of the year. It was a combined dance, therefore everyone was eligible to attend. The Student and Red Cross Councils planned the event, which was the first Beat Cathedral Dance ever held at Tech. It was also the first time a freshman was crowned Red Cross Queen. The victory over Cathedral the following Saturday made the dance successful. Our first rally is held before our first home game. As the band plays ‘‘Cheers”, everyone waits for the cheerleaders to begin the first cheer. There is the introducing of the football team and the performing of the majorettes. However, this first rally is not the biggest one. The Cathedral rally is al- ways more exciting. There is the traditional hanging of an effigy of a Cathedral player. Shouts of approval are heard throughout the school during this event.
