We are celebrating our sixtieth year as Technical High School. In 1898 an experimental Mechanics Art School, located at Winchester Square and headed by Charles Warner, was formed to provide the young people of Springfield with both technical and acade mic training. In 1906 the school moved to Elliot Street and became Technical High School. When more facilities became necessary in 1924, the Spring Street building was constructed. After the death of Mr. Warner in 1926, Harold B. Marsh be- came the principal until 1934. His successor, Major Burton B. Adams, brought about the construction of the additions which included the auditorium, the cafeteria and the connec- tion of the Spring and Elliot Street buildings. Upon the retirement of Major Adams in 1940, M. Marcus Ki- ley became the guiding light of Tech until 1949 when he was succeeded by Dr. Leo Gans. In 1953 Mr. Donald Gifford took his place among the competent men who have led the faculty and student body. Tech has witnessed many changes through the years, but it has always been an extraordinary influence on everyone who comes in contact with it. On such a milestone in Tech’s history, it gives the entire student body great pleasure to say, ‘‘Happy Birthday Tech’’! ,5ON5 cREETING we -—_ The Mormon Tabernacle Choir A Cathedral Invader captured by the Tech Patrol eninge eaten Soiasammanee ink ae cet tee esrb ue _ C. SE, 5UN 5 CREE T1 Assemblies are a very vital function of our school year. Through these school wide gatherings, Techites have the opportunity to become ac- quainted with school organizations and activities, to honor fellow class- mates for both academic and ath- ASSEMBLIES letic achievements, to celebrate na- tional or religious holidays, or to have a ‘‘fireside’’ chat with school officials about various subjects. These occasions will hold pleasant memories for us in the years to come. RALLIES Tech students displayed their spirit at the rous- ing Tech-Cathedral rally. As shouts of approval rang throughout the school, the traditional hanging of the Cathedral player took place. The rally, inspired by the playing of the band and yells from the cheerleaders, proved to be one of the most enthusiastic events of the year. 13 Band flare and crowds cheer as the team en- ters. Sports at Tech have always aroused great enthusiasm and _ spirit. Tech-ites are always ready to stand by their team in victory and in occasional defeat. Each year Tech's various musical organizations present two concerts which have earned the rep- utation of being highlights of the school year. The band, under the direction of Mr. Meyers, and the Concert Choir, Chorale, and Chorus, un- der the supervision of Mr. Murphy, present skill- ful renditions of a great variety of musical com- positions. 4 The Christmas Concert was presented on De- cember 21, 1965. Among the selections of the combined chorus were: O Come O Come Emmanuel, Al- leluia, Silent Night, and Now Christmas Is Come. The Spring Concert was presented in the early part of the season. The musical groups again presented an extremely interesting program. Mr. Meyers RED CROSS On December 10, 1965 the annual Red Cross coronation dance was held in the gymnasium. Mr. Herbert Northrup retired at the end of the 1965-66 school year after forty-one years of teaching, thirty-six of which were spent teaching chemistry at Tech. Mr. Northrup graduated from the University of South Dakota with a B.A. degree in 1923. For two years he was one of three teachers, each of which taught five different subjects, at Emery High School in South Da- Mr. Northrup kota. For the next three years Mr. Northrup taught general science and chemistry at Balboa High School, Balboa, Panama Canal Zone. After two years of study at the University of Chicago, he earned a M.S. degree in organic chemistry. Mr. Northrup came to Tech in 1930 and has taught here since. In addition Mr. Northrup was the head of the chemistry department for many years. In 1946 he was a teacher at the Springfield Junior College. All the lucky students who have had Mr. Northrup understand the great loss his leaving is to Tech. The Tech Tiger, on behalf of all past and present Tech stu- dents, wishes Mr. Northrup a most happy and eventful future. After nineteen years of faithful teaching service, Mr. John Robinson re- tired in June. Mr. Robinson studied at Springfield College and Gorham College, Gor- ham, Maine. Before coming to Tech, Mr. Robinson taught in Bellows Falls, Vermont for many years. Since 1947 he has taught machine shop to many Tech graduates. Mr. Robinson plans to spend his time traveling around the world and doing everything he hasn’t had time to do. His immediate plans include trips to Mexico and Alaska. The great number of students Mr. Robinson has taught are the back- bone of many of the machine shops in the Springfield area. We, the peo- ple of Tech, would like to salute Mr. Robinson and thank him for many years of devoted service to the school. Mr. Robinson 32 IN MEMORIUM The Tech Tiger, on behalf of all of Tech, would like to devote this space to a memorial testimony to two of our late teachers: Lee Bennet Revels and Alfred Johnson. Mr. Revels died on April 8, 1965 at the age of twenty- nine. He had a good relationship with both students and parents. Mr. Lynch can be quoted as saying, ‘‘He was a kindly fellow who commanded the respect o f everyone he met.” Mr. Revels also showed his concern for students and children outside of school. He was a member of the N.A.A.C.P. and the Special Class Teachers’ Association, He was also an organizer of the North End Area Minis- try’s After-School Reading Program. The Tech faculty and student body will always hold a fond memory of this courageous and tolerant young man. Lee Bennet Revels Tech lost a great teacher when Mr. Alfred John- son passed away on May 3, 1965. Mr. Johnson taught for thirty-four years, twenty- three which were spent at Tech as a history teacher and a golf coach. Mr. Johnson did un- dergraduate work at Springfield College and graduate work at Columbia University. Mr. Johnson's greatest contributions were in education and teacher organizations. He was past president of both the Springfield Education Association and the Massachusetts Teacher’s Association. He also was state director of the National Education Association. In memory of Mr. Johnson's sacrifice to his stu- dents the Al Johnson Trophy will be given to the most improved golf player at Tech each year. 33 Alfred Johnson NEW TEACHERS FIRST ROW: Mr. Lynch, Miss Dongian, Mr. Shea, Miss Regina, Mr. O'Malley. 71 A TIGER Of the opening day few remember anything specific, yet all recall some vague impressions of that day of days. There was that first mass march through for- bidding halls to a room that would be known as home for the next three years. There was the sink- ing feeling that came when you realized that not only the senior class but also your own group was full of strangers. There was that small useless map on page twelve of the obsolete handbook. And, of course, there was the endless filling out of those cards that you had the strangest compulsion to tear, fold, mutilate, and staple. Having survived the sudden onslaught of new teach- ers, regulations, and upperclassmen, the Class of '66 was well on its way — somewhere. Next came the freshmen elections when most people voted, many for unknown candidates. We also ratified a constitu- tion, the function of which few understood. But de- mocracy has always managed to survive such short- comings, and thus our class was Officially launched. Many of us bought something known as SA without knowing exactly what it was, but it was through membership in that organization that we were intro- duced to school functions. We had a great football squad that year and lost only one game. The news- papers that we received with SA were found to be excellent book covers. And then came the crowning touch of every Tech year — Tech Tantrums. This wild conglomeration of talent was the one success we he RIE LElC IRS could always count on. Though few of us had much to do with that first show, the confusion managed to effect us all in some way. Our one activity came in April, when we made the first attempt at holding a class dance. Again confusion reigned; however, we somehow got it off the ground, and there was some rumor to the effect that it actually was a SUCCESS. In the outside world things were happening that affected us in different ways. A President was as- sassinated one afternoon in November, Civil Rights had become the issue of the day, and there was a small war somewhere in Asia that occasionally re- ceived notice on the front page. On the less serious side of matters, we lived through a full-scale inva- sion of Englishmen who were described by Caesar in Book IV of his commentaries. As the end of our first year approached, we again set ourselves to that business of politics and elected new leaders. Finals came a short while later, and then the Class of '64 graduated. It would only be a short time before we again undertook our scholastic burdens. The beginning of our junior year was comparatively quiet. Although there was some confusion here and there, for the most part the Class of '66 was off to a smooth start. The mundane task of gaining an edu- cation went along fairly uninterrupted until mid- year. 1h) The football team turned in a respectable rec- ord and beat Cathedral for the second season. Mid-years were no longer a novelty, but it was at about that time that things began happening. Tech was becoming a victim of creeping apathy, and the results were the cancellation of our class dance and the formation of an all-school affair. For a school wide event, the dance didn’t draw many more students than would a class function. Nevertheless, we optimistically chalked that one up as a success. It was at about this time that we received our class rings-expensive little ornaments that we spent the rest of the year watching disintegrate. Undaunted by all other things, we turned to television and watched our basketball team lose achampionship. But spring came along and brought some relief to our disheartening misadventures. We again set out to create a dance that might draw more than curiosity seekers. This would go down in history as the Junior Prom of the Class ’66. With the usual amount of trouble the dance was finally completed, and to everyone’s surprise, a goodly number attended. Not long after this we were faced with that terror of terrors — col- lege boards. For one terrible Saturday in May Tech was full of miserable souls, who suffered for periods ranging from two to six hours. But again we Survived. me PALMER HIGH SCHOOL [al Y Br | TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL” [im The outside world had changed only slightly in a year. A new President had been elected, Civil Rights was still a big issue and was moving closer to us, and that small war was big enough for headlines. On the lighter side, Dick Tracy had conquered the moon, and those English groups seemed to be well entrenched in spite of the opposition shown by a few rebellious souls. Elections came again. We set about the task with not much more order than we had two years before, and we chose not only officers, but also class colors and a banner. With that we bade a fond good riddance to the Class of '65. Of the senior year there is not much to be said. At the time of this writing we were suspended in the midst of all of our final activities. Members of the class had received senior hats and made a final push for SA. Yearbook pictures, that lack of which has resulted in this post mortem, had been taken; and the yearbook staff was in its frantic last minute push to meet a deadline. College boards had once again shaken our sense of security and college applications had brought us back to reality. A number of sub- versive organizations such as the IRA and the Hairston Society popped up. We had even found time to get in one senior dance and were pres- ently working on the second.
