Marcus Kiley Itis withthe pride and affection held bysons anddaughters fora wonderful father that the students of Technical High School dedicate their 1963 TIGER to Dr. M. Marcus Kiley, retired deputy superintendent of the Springfield Public Schools and principal of Tech from 1940 to 1949. We know that other fine leaders preceded Dr. Kiley at Tech, but they were before our time. Here is the man associated in our minds with most of the causes for the out- standing reputation our school has made. As Principal Gifford sowell said: At first Tech was Mark, Mark was Tech. In fact, eventhough his scope has necessarily broadened in the past several years, one sus- pects that good secondary education and Tech are somewhat synonymous in his think- ing even today. Dr. Kiley came to Tech as a chemistry teacher in 1921, and became itceeets one principal in 1936. For forty years he dedicated himself to the welfare of the young peoplesomthisi city. Many of his ideals have been accepted far and wide across the nation. His devotion to mathematics and science has made Springfield a leader in these fields which are so important to present-day America. His standards were always high; his dislike for second-rate effort evident to all who knew him. Tech will always remember and honor Dr. Kiley. Great faith he had in youthful hand and mind Working with God to benefit mankind. AS 38 38 As we mirror our last three years at Tech, we will remember our able leader Mr. Gifford and his two assistants Mr. Lynch and Mr, Jackson. We will also recall the counselors, who were instru- mental in guiding our paths at Tech, and the effi- cient office staff, without whom the school's adminis - tration would not be able to function, The combined efforts of all these devoted people have helped to make Tech the superior school that IE LS ae , Ge, S Se Ree ee Secretaries, Miss Duquette, Miss Carr. CHARLES R, ALLAN March 8, 1902 -- February 20, 1963 From September 1930 to February 1963, Technical High School had been graced by the presence of Charles Reid Allan, a gentleman anda scholar, a beloved teacher and a highly respected and admired colleague. Although keenly interested in his subject, physics, he was more interested in his students, and strove to stimulate their minds in the direction of ever greater achievement. Fortunate were those young people who came under his benign and constructive influence and learned his meticulous way of doing things. He was devoted to the aims and ideals of this school and put his whole heart in his work. Of him it may be truly said he was a great teacher. His deathhas been an irrevocable loss to all of us, for he combined in his person those qualities of character, mind, and spirit which have inspired us in the past and will con- tinue to do as long as Tech endures. His memory is a blessing. Would you like to be Gey NSN Bourg Sa0gy, bd Watch it ther a : CaS Now that we havecompleted our three years at Tech, we can look back and see the wonderful experiences we have had. We will alwaysremember our first wary days as freshmen, but how quickly we became ad- justed to the fast-moving high school life. We will also remember, of course, the class dances we attended and the many other activities in which we participated. As seniors we took over, (or so we thought), and this proved to be our most exciting year. During this year we began to think about our career or college plans, and to discuss these plans with our friends and counselors, Toward the end of the year, however, we began to regret our leaving because it meant having to part with old friends. Looking backupon our years at Tech is a pleasure for us, and we hope that all future senior classes will be able to recall their three years here with as much enjoyment and satisfaction. ee Warner KATHY O'SULLIVAN scholarship, service, citizenship -- these arethe criteria by which cach yearsan. selectedthe winners ofthe CharlesH. Warner Achievement Medal, Tech's highest award. This year's winners could not have been better chosen. Endless energy, inexhaustible friendliness, bubbling laughter, and complete de- votion to Tech's tradition and spirit characterize Kathy O'Sullivan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice O'Sullivan of 383 Nottingham Street. With executive positions in both her class and the Student Council, and interests ranging from music, science, debating, and chess to news editing, cheerleading, and Tantrums - cavorting, Kathy indeed typifies the best that any school can put forward. Achievement MAX POLAK Scholarship: first in a class of 475; service: offices in Mu Alpha Theta and Engi- neering Clubs and membership in the Student Patrol; citizenship: the high regard of bothhisteachers and his fellow students -- these are the qualities which led to the selection of Max Polak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Polak of 54 Hyde Avenue. Quietly capable, modestly excellent, Max is a talented musician, mathematician, and Latin student, andthe winner of the Harvard Book Award, given annually to the outstanding Junior boy. Max has continued to be outstanding in his senior year, crowning his achievements with this medal, the highest acclaim Tech can give. Tech's very best wishes go to both Kathy and Max. As juniors, however, we were supposedly experienced and familiarized with the procedure here, and we discovered that our once valid excuses such as I for- got my class or I went to the wrong lunch” were now considered worthless. We became accustomed to this quite readily though and settled down to work, show - ing our worth by having 55of us qualify for member- ship in the National Honor Society, and having about 59% membership in the S.A. race. Our spirit showed forth through our two successful Junior dances, the latter being our Prom. Now as our Junior year comes to a close, we forget the past and concentrate on the next year, when we, at last, will become the Senior class of Technical High School. President Vice-president Jack Auger John Drummond Junior Log Secretary Treasurer Evy Cram Margo Gregory Our second wonderful year at Tech began with a new slate of officers. Jacques Auger was our president, and John Drummond assisted him as Vice-president. Evelyn Cram kept a careful record of class activities, while Margo Gregory counted our money. As we look back over this year, we are filled with pleasant memories. We will always remember, for example, our Junior dance, Moonlight in Autumn, the thrill of finally receiving our class rings, the sense of unity we felt when as a class we decided upon our banner and colors, and our most successful Junior Prom. We are now looking forward to our Senior year because we know that the year ahead of us will be even better than the year that has passed. Mower, this gis Johny” Now that our first hectic year at Tech asthe insignifi- cant Freshmen has finally come to a close, we reflect upon the many memories, both good and bad, which we have accumulated, remembering primarily those first bewildering days here and our class activities. After having spent several disheartening hours wander - ing through the seemingly endless corridors of Tech, we finally became familiar with the school and pre- pared ourselves for three active years, When we were finally accepted by the upperclassmen, we were well received at all games and rallies where we displayed typical Tech Spirit. Our enthusiastic support of Tech's clubs and other organizations was also appreciated by our school. We arenow looking forwardto next year when, as the members of the juniorclass, we will be one year clos- er to graduation, FRESHMEN ... dhed Freshman Log Treasurer Kathy Evans President Larry Cote Vice-president Secretary Mary Ann Allen Barbara Chmielewski In September the frightened members of the Freshman class entered the realms of Tech. It didn't take long, however, for them to get over their self-consciousness and begin their class activities. They soon held their first election, and when the excitement of campaigns was over and the results were announced, Larry Cote, who was elected president, was in a man's Utopia because his fellow officers were: Mary Ann Allen, vice-president; Barbara Chmielewski, secretary; and Kathy Evans, treasurer. In the spring the Freshmen held their class dance, which was a great success and is sureto be remembered for many years. The members of the class of 1965 contributed their enthusiastic support to manyteams, clubs, and other extracurricular activities. Their presence was also well received at all games and rallies. One activity in which everyone participates is S.A. This organization supports many of the other activi- ties at Tech such as the Tech Tiger, Tech News, and band. In the student patrol, corridor patrol, stage crew, and visual aids, boys find opportunities to serve, while girls may give their time as cashiers, office aids, or library aids. The Drama Club, Tech Tantrums, and the various foreign language clubs provide a chance to demon- strate one's talents and abilities. The enthusiastic support which these and other ac- tivities such as Pep Squad, cheerleading, National Honor Society, and Student Council receive have helped to make Tech Spirit what it is. Reflecting upon our years at Tech, we recall that the various Tech teams did extremely well against tough competition. In the fall our football and soccer teams battled against some of the best teamsin the state to achieve good records, During the winter hardy Techites, members of the basketball, bowling, wrestling, hockey, andswimming teams braved the snowstorms for a typical show of Tech Spirit. With the arrival of spring, our baseball, crew, golf, tennis, and track teams maintained their excellent records. We congratulate the members of these teams for their achievements, andthank them for their enthu- siastic participation in Tech's athletic activities. ie oe. enon ye Ry no eae SOON STANDING: 1. tor.: Jim Wainwright, Don Martin.
