Teéh is known far and wide as a school with loads of school year loyal Techites earned some $3,000 and co-operation. This is the spirit we Le fe) illustrate in Tech Tiger 1958. The roar of the crowd at football rs Oe the thundering applause after Tantrums, the dreamy music at school dances, and the busy ‘scratch- scratch” of pencils hard at work—all these parts of the enthusiasm we call the Tech Spirit. When asked his opinion of Tech spirit, Mr. Donald G. Gifford said, “I think that Tech spirit is tremendous. My only hope is that we can provide the kind and quality of activities which will nurture and strengthen this spirit.” Mr. Melvin A. Lynch replied, ‘The Tech spirit is something that all other schools would like to have, but they really don't know how to get it. .” In the opinion of Mr. Belding F. Jackson, “. . There are few places in the world where friendliness, hard work, and loyalty are more evident than in this school. . .” MR. LYNCH MR. This year was no excep- tion, as nineteen teachers joined Tech's faculty. The English Department took a goodly portion of these “profs.'’ Miss Rose Lynch, Miss Judith Carl- son, Miss Betty Roth, Mrs. Dorothy Pryor, and Miss Ruby Bevens tackled the task of teaching Techites. Mrs. Pryor came to Tech after serving as a sub- stitute for many years, while Miss Lynch, Miss Carl- son, and Miss Bevens came from junior highs. Miss Roth came to Tech from Vinton, Iowa where she taught speech. In the realm of atoms and molecules, Mr. Robert Dooley, Mr. Norman Forest, and Mr. Joseph Hopkins joined Tech's Science Department. All four teachers have had previous experience. Tech's Math Department took on Mr. Charles Withirell and Mr. Joseph Laronda. Mr. Laronda hails from Norton High, while Mr. Withirell served two years as Dean of Men at Wienstevoh, an agriculture college in Germany. Miss Elizabeth Huller, the only addition to Tech's Foreign Language Department, is well qualified, hav- ing attended Our Lady of the Elms College and the University of Massachusetts and having taught at schools in Belchertown. Both gyms have new additions this year - Mr. Donald Foley for the boys, and Mrs. Mary Jo Walkup and Mrs. Fredrica Vaughn for the girls. Mr. Foley, a graduate of Springfield College, formerly taught at Buckingham. Mrs. Walkup comes from Texas where she taught in the Pasadena schools. Mrs. Vaughn hails from Buckingham and Forest Park schools. Tech’s Music Department took on two new profs, Mr. Richard Kegerreis and Mr. Warren Myers now teach pupils about sharps and flats. Mr. Kegerreis is in charge of the vocal groups, and Mr. Myers is in charge of instrumental groups. In Tech's Shop Department, Mr. Neal Bradstreet and Mr. Charles Piterse teach Tech students drawing. Mr. Bradstreet previously taught at schools in Rhode Island, and Mr. Piterse had teaching experience at Forest Park. Last, but not least, Mr. Harry Vatousiou is a welcome addition to History Department, Mr. Vat- ousiou, a Tech grad, has had teaching experience in Canton, Mass. middle of this year with one’of the finest records a_ teacher could have. She: taught at Tech for 31 years. With the exception of one year as an exchange teach: er in Tacoma,. Washington, she has avaye, taught here. Miss Allen has said that Tech is an excellent school in which to teach, and, Even after: teaching _ for over 30 years, I still don't know any ot her school ° I'd rather be in than Tech.” Besides the usual duties of a teacher, Miss Allen was active in Tantrums and Pro Merito. She was not | only a very good math teacher, but also a wonderful person to know. She was always willing to help any-. one, whether the aye was one of her auger oF not. M U S 18 The operation of the Music Depart- ment is a hard job, but under the able direction of Mr. Warren Myers and Mr. Richard Kegerreis, the job has been well done. The Band used its new uni- forms for the first time this year and at the rallies and games really added to the Tech spirit. Techites should really be proud to know that they solicited the funds to help buy these flashy uniforms. In our Freshman year we got off to a wonderful start by being the top class in S. A. membership. Dave Coupal was President; Joe Guertin was Vice- President; Judy Turowski was Secretary; and Sonia Boshko was Treasurer. The big event of the year was our first dance, ‘Hawaiian Moon.” During our Junior year Bob Savoy was President; Joe Guertin was Vice-President; Judy DiSanti was Secretary; and Judy Cowles was Treasurer. Our first Robert Savoy, Junior Class President. dance was “Starlight Serenade.’ Our concluding ¢- vent was the Junior Prom, ‘Almost Paradise.” The class of 58” designed the new and modern school ring. This year with Vinny Hudzikiewicz as President, Ray Jodoin as Vice-President, Judy DiSanti as Sec- retary, and Judy Cowles as Treasurer, we had three dances. Our first dance was “Sophisticated Swing.” We then had our semi-formal ‘Sweethearts on Pa- rade” with Judy Cowles and Karl Pearce as king and queen. Our biggest and final events were the “Senior Prom,” the banquet and, of course, graduation. 87 f ve Ahi iant 1 a eae. Class Officers And Council Vice-President, Judy Falt Secretary, Cynthia Shaw President, Barry West Treasurer, Robert Dobek Junior Log Our Junior class started the year with a new slate of officers. We sure kept them busy. Barry West was our president and Judy Falt assisted him as vice-president. Cynthia Shaw kept a careful record of our doings and Bob Dobek counted our money, especially what we took in at the Black Cat Fiesta. We experienced the unprecedented idea of hav- ing Friendly Ice Cream serve us at our informal dance, ‘Snow By Starlight.” The music was marvel- ous and the atmosphere alluring. In February our Class Colors and Banner Com- mittee stepped in to make sure we'd be ready for “the big year.” Our advisors, Miss Mary Shea, Mr. George 98 1 S| a : . 7 ane @ « i . pe Andrews, Miss Mabel Potter, Miss Helen Borner, Miss Eleanor Reardon, Mr. Frank McMahan, and Mr. John Loiko, guided us through another success- ful year. We wound up our year in a world of fantasy through the Junior Prom. Who can forget waltzing midst our classmates to the strains of melodious sounds? Our prom added the remaining jewel to the crown of success which we hope to wear throug h the promising glory of our senior year. It is our hope to continue the work we have started by showing the great Tech Spirit as we pro- gress into the future. Tech will always remember the originality and determination of the class of ‘59. Ingenious signs cov- ered the inside of the building and all kinds of pins and tags hung from pocketbooks and button-holes. After all this campaign activity, the freshmen elected Sherman Danio, president; Judy Barry, vice- president; Linda Keating, secretary; and Jean Stewart, treasurer. Class advisors are Mrs. Ethel Wilson, Mr. Alphonse Jackowski, Miss Miriam Whittemore, Miss Katherine Roy, Mr. James Curran, Mr. Pasquale Romano, and Mr. Emil Biscaldi. The advisors and the class officers did a great job of guiding the class in all their activities. In the beginning of the year the freshmen showed their school spirit and good sense by head- ing the S. A. drive, leaving the juniors and seniors far behind. The freshman contribution to the Black Cat Fiesta was the coffee and donuts booth, which proved to be a big attraction. In May the freshmen held their dance which turned out to be a big success and loads of fun for everyone. Individually the members of the class of 1960 have been active in many of the school clubs and affairs. , Congratulations to the class of 1960 for doing a wonderful job of keeping up the Tech standard. The highlights of the year are given here. The enrollment week in November started with a stirring assembly--the theme of which was “No Man is an Island’’- -and ended with a beautiful dance at which Judy Cowles reigned as queen--and what a beautiful queen she was! Her court--composed oi five pretty girls--and the decorations made an ideal setting for the “Autumn Coronation.” Another noteworthy project undertaken was the J. R. C. booth at the Black Cat Fiesta. After taking can- did shots of typical Techites followed by frantic edi- ting and topped by a hair-raising ride up a mountain through a blizzard to get it developed, the J. R. C. proudly pre sented their movie, “Life at Tech.” It was a very successful project. The money received from the Enroliment Drive was spent on several worthy projects. Over a hun- dred Christmas gifts from Tech were received by the Ledger, Jane Herrick, Carolyn Peterson, Robert Robillard. A school chest, to be sent overseas was a long range project. The mem- bers of J.R.C. bought sufficient health, school, and athletic supplies to supply one classroom of thirty students. The past two chests sent from Tech went to Viet Nam and Hungary. Besides the projects mentioned there were many others which were carried out by the talents and time of the students at Tech. Acts from Tantrums will be used in local hospitals. Hospitals also receive cookies baked at Tech. The sewing classes cooperate in mak- ing clothing for children in institutions and hospitals. The International Art Exchange include work from Tech. The J.R.C. has also taken an active part in the activi ties of the inter-high council for the past year. The Junior Red Cross Council wishes to thank everyone who has helped to make the year 1957-1958 such a successful year. Over 200 students entered exhibits, making the Tech Science Fair one of the biggest in the state. Exhibits were divided into five classes - - physics, chemistry, electronics, life sciences, and mathe- matics. Tech students put their hearts into their projects and came up with such interesting and informative exhibits that the judges had a hard time choosing the winners. The first prize winner in physics was Mark Sirulnik with his project, The Centrifugal Force Arlaine Anderson; First Prize, Biology TOME HN ERLE ae oa Don Trice; First Prize, Chemistry POH Mark Sirulnik; First Prize, Physics CIENCE FAIR Meter. Instead of the traditional one night's performance of the Festival of Music, the music de- partment went “all out” in its support of the band uniform drive and presented two nights of musical entertainment renamed Band Booster Night. Wednesday night, April 10th, was given over to music for the whole family. It was just that. There was something for the everybody - - sacred music of the 16th century, folk music, novelties, operetta and current hits. Thursday night's program was prepared for the students and featured the Band, Swingsters and Concert Choir in a Pops Concert that had the audience really “jumping.” In addition to the money raised by the concerts for new uniforms, the homerooms, clubs, cheerlead- ers, crew, faculty and Student and Corridor Patrols raised money by different activities. Also, there were patrons and sponsors for the concert. A total of $2700 was eared to date. The purpose of the Fair is to give credit to those who have done meritorious work. This is done by displaying their talent and presenting awards to those who have done outstand- ing work. The Fine Arts division was separated into four sections, namely, Design 10, Advanced Design, Draw- ing and Painting, and Third Dimensional Design. The award winners of Design 10 were the follow- ing: Ist place, Jacques Faure; 2nd place, Sally Stewart; 3rd place, John Scozzafava. Awards of Advanced Design were received by the following: Barbara Mortimer, Ist place; Fred Robinson, 2nd place; and Nancy Baillieul, 3rd place. The Drawing and Painting Awards were pre- sented to Judy McMullen, John Cunningham, and Maureen Gorman. The purpose of the show was to raise money for the Band Booster project. In two and a half hours many things were ex- hibited ranging from dogs to fly casting. The show began with an archery demonstration by the Aga- wam Bowmen and concluded with the fabulous Shooting Linds.” Balloons were popped and aspirin shot out of the fingers of Ernie Lind by his wife. They concluded their act with a bullet drawing of an Indian. The dogs were a fox terrier and a poodle trained by dog obedience classes. They were taught to re- trieve by senses. Fly casting as a sport was shown and it was quite remarkable to note the distance one Mr. Sprague, Agawam Bowmen could obtain by timing and motion. Fishing equip- ment was displayed in the hall throughout the show. Two of Tech’s own students, Jeff Cardinelli and John Sullivan, were on hand to contribute an amazing show of skill on the high bar. A movie on wildlife in Alaska was shown for the first time. It pictured the abundance of fish and game in northern woodlands. Also in the film were natives of the country and the conditions under which they lived. The show went off without a hitch largely be- cause of the efforts of Mr. Sprague and Mr. Jacko- wski. It concluded the drive for money to obtain Band uniforms. The only comment after the show was, “a job well done by all who participated—enthusiasts, amateurs, and professionals. 133 — Once again the Black Cat Fiesta returned to Tech. This year’s Fiesta consisted of booths sponsor- ed by various Tech organizations. Two special attractions this year were the movies of Tech life and the variety show. The profit made at the Fiesta was used to pur- chase more band uniforms. This was Mr. Peterson's first win over the invaders from Chicopee in his five years of coaching at Tech. Tech tied Chi- copee last year. The Tigers marched on to rack up large scores against their two opponents, Greenfield and Holyoke. The non-league Cathedral game, the second of its kind, was cancelled. After a week's rest, Tech came back to roll over last year's champs, West Side. The alleys hum- med and the candle pins flew as Tech took on all city comers in- cluding a new member to the league, Longmeadow. 149 FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Richard Bolt, John Schenk, Frank Savoy, Bobby Clark, Neil Maurer, Mr. Bowler. SE- COND ROW: Charlie Bowman, Bill Frank, Dick Monighetti, Harry Dederian, Dave Kretschmar. Tennis ! The Tech tennis team, due to the ) hard work of both Coach Bowler and the players, came through their season on top. Of the thirteen regular: matches, | Tech's netmen took seven and lost five. Bill Frank, No. 1; Charles Bowman, No. 2; and Captain Frank Savoy, No. ) 3, all seniors, led the attack against the | opposition. The other three starters were freshman Harry Dederian, No. 4; and Bob Clark, No. 5 with junior, Neil Maur- er, No. 6. Mr. Bowler said, “This was the best balanced team I've had in the past few years.” Some of the matches play- ed, although lost, were the best the courtmen had played. In the finish of the Greenfield match, Tech needed both sets of doubles. They lost these sets by small margins, but played over their head all the way. In the Western Massachusetts Ten- nis Tourney, the first tourney in this area, Tech was represented by Frank, Bowman, Savoy, and Derderian. Both Bill Frank and Harry Dederian stayed in the running to the third round, but failed to bring home a cup. SECOND ROW: Kenneth Brochu, David Tetreault, Roger Potvin, Mr. Al Johnson, Stuart Taylor, Stanley Merek. Golf, another of Tech's better sports, Golf is hitting a bigger spotlight as the team gains ground. Under the fine coaching of Mr. Al Johnson, the team showed considerable ability for a new one. Much of the nucleus of this year’s goli team will be returning in “58” to stari off a new and strong season. The team showed great potential golfers in that they had a strong over-all average. Tech’s greensters teed off agains! Cathedral in their opener. The Panthers, with a strong team, came out on top in these games and also in a later match The Bengals bounced back in the nex game to hold Holyoke scoreless. In the away games we showed poorly, beinc beaten by Northampton, Longmeadow and Mount Hermon. Against Trade the greensters did well, beating them twice by the same score. Classical, our othe city opponent, was held well and we managed to beat Mr. Johnson's mer twice. In Chicopee, the Tech boys spli the two matches. Tech, with many ex perienced pplayers, entered the West ern Mass. Tournament in Chicopee anc placed 5th. Finishing the season with « 5 win, 7 loss record, the Tech golfer made a good showing.
