This team certainly was a "holy terror" to its opponents. The scores for the important games of the season were as follows . 12A-12B 4 0 IZA-12C 2 0 12A-11C 1 0 The high scorers of the year were: Louise Larsen, Alice Ricord and Mickey Caroussis. Elizabeth Tobey played a brilliant game as goal-keeper. Page 96 A ' T' ici: T 5 ii E Girls' Basketball 'THROUGH a series of elimination games, these Seniors emerged victorious from the tournaments, with not one defeat. The girls have "grown up" this year. In place of two-division basketball, Miss Hunter, the new coach, trained them to play three- division basketball. As a result, this year's teams are much speedier. Girls from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades partici- pated in the tournaments. The members of the winning team are: Charlotte Brielmaier Doris Larsen Louise Jordan Elizabeth Tobey Alice Ricord janet Smith Page 97 Dance Pageant FOR the first time in the history of Teaneck High School, a dance pageant was presented by the girls of the school at the Physical Education Exhibi- tion. Most of these girls had never received a dancing lesson previously. The dance was "A Cycle of Time,', a group of original dances by Miss Hunter, in which the cycle of a day was depicted. The pageant commenced with "Dawn.,' To the music of Gregg's "Morning,', six girls, dressed in the pastels of sunrise, awoke the sleeping world. At the conclusion of their dance, the "Chariot of Apollof' driven by a ruthless Apollo and drawn by his horses, rushed madly onto the stage summoning the sun. As he drove his horses off, a group of girls, dressed in the green of the forest, danced amid the sweet scents of summer, as they carried long garlands of flowers. This was "Day." Then, immensity and peace once more, as "Night" brought with it the "Moon," calm seren- ity shining from her face, and those roguish rascals, the "Stars," which concluded the pageant. 4 Page 98 T T1 Girls' Leaders' Club Ojicers Presiclcfnt . . . ..,. Louise Larsen Sc'crc'fary . ....., Alice Ricord Sponsor , s , . .Grace O. Hunter THE Leaders' Club is a new organization in this school. All girls in the Senior High are eligible for membership. These girls assist the Physical Education teachers in sports that are carried on after school. For a new organization, this club has been extremely active this year. In addition to organizing and refereeing all the sports' tournaments for the girls, they managed a fashion show, participated in the Physical Education exhibit, and danced in "The Pied Piper of Hamelinf' a dance created by Miss Hunter, in the Girls' League Vaudeville. The Leaders' Club was also formed to help any organization and to lend a hand in any way to help the school. Page 99 Cheerleaders Raymond Hansen Eva Manno Virginia Reeves Evelyn Laird Faculty Advisers . , . .... Miss Moller, Mr. Galanti ABOVE are the best cheerleaders in Bergen County. They introduced new Cheers and worked with the school helping to make Teaneck High a place where sportsmanship is Hrst, last, and always. "Ginny,' Reeves was captain and showed other schools what cheer- leading really is. But who wouldn't with the personality "Ginny" shows? "Ginny,' is leaving the school this year and we hope that she will be as successful "out in the cruel world" as she was in Teaneck High. "Chip" Hansen with his novel methods of punctuating the cheers with handsprings also helped to put Teaneck on the road to success. He, too, will be leaving this year. Good luck! "I-lappyv Manno and "Mickey" Laird were the other peppy mem- bers of the cheerleaders. Both will be back next year to lead Teaneck to new laurels. They deserve great praise for their hard and earnest work. Page I00 onlfffror' f Football Sl'0l'l'K T. H. S. Several players were outstanding, such as Ray Wild and Tony Zaycek, who formed a wonderful pass combination. Danny Ruess played a great game at tackle and his kicking saved the team in many a tight spot, while Denny Averill and Bill Bridenberg played excellent games in the backfield. During the season the boys lost three games, won one and tied five. This shows that while the boys had plenty of fight they seemed to lack the winning punch. And to Coach Rea we all owe a vote of thanks for making such an interesting season when the possibilities seemed so poor. Page 1 02 ,e 4- e . . . lvl 1 7' LJ n 1-3516 .,. - f -I Basketball TEANECK,S basketball team was outstanding this year, just missing the championship of the league by being defeated by Fort Lee 25-16 when both were tied for first place in the last league game of the season. The team was captained by Ken Mulcahy, who starred at guard, while Chap- man, our giant center, whose height gave him a good edge over his opponents, was high scorer for the season. The team for the major part of the year held first place in the league. Much credit for this is given to Coach V. Dolph's build-up system. This was the first really successful basketball team Teaneck has put on the courts, although she has had championship teams in tennis, baseball and football. Besides the work of Mulcahy and Chapman, there were several others on the team who also stood out. Wild, who was not in the play until mid-season, did an excellent job at forward, while Gloeckler, who alternated at center and guard, played a game that was hard to beat even though he was bothered with an infection on his head. Pines at guard and O'Reilly at forward also played an excellent game. All in all it was the best basketball team Teaneck has had. Though almost all of the regular nine were veterans they did not start with the brand of baseball expected of them. As this is Written early in the season, we expect the team has improved greatly over their Hrst few games. Coach Guiler's boys, though not exceptionally powerful or skillful, nevertheless, held the interest of the fans. "Peanut,' Averill's capers in the infield, and Ray Wild's rapid fire cracks and comebacks carrying over the field delighted the spectators. Freddy Degerick, our pitching mainstay, and Ray Wild, our peer- less catcher, formed an efficient battery. All the fellows on the team worked hard. Several good players who did not do their work, as did the rest of the team, were dropped. The team played a heavy schedule, meeting: DATE PLACE AprH .... .,. Fort Lee .. Teaneck April .,.. ..,.. The boys have the kind of spirit that Coach Dvoryak says "makes a winning team.', Bill Auer, who throws the shot and runs the mile, did not know how to bicycle. Now that he has this down with great efficiency we see him coasting Cas many of the other fellows doj. "Spitz" Gloeckler, our Stall' high jumper, has jumped to new heights. Wfherever you are you hear him talking and fooling with the newer members of the track squad. He was telling a younger boy how to do the roll and the boy did not do it right. "Spitz" throws out his chest and says, "Watch me." "Spitz" jumped and rolled, hit the bar and kept rolling after he had hit the ground. But don't take us wrong now because a slip always does happen to the best of them and Fred is one of the best in Bergen County. Captain Steve Guss, the sprint man, burns up the track when he runs. At the beginning of the season he was running at half-speed and yet he could look back at the others trying desperately to overtake him. Ed Thinglestad, who does the broad jumping and pole vaulting, found two logs one day and making a cannon out of them, proceeded to shoot down the track squad, but along came Coach and saved the boys from the murderous field star. Other members who helped to make the track squad the best ever were Carl Schiffendecker and Ed Weist in the sprintsg Livio Vagnina in the quarter mile, Ray Hansen, John Morrison, Jock Barrie, and Ralph XVetmore in the half-mileg Jack Kitson, Ray Cordes, and Ed Peterson in the mile. Last yearis team was so successful that the arrival of this season was heralded with enthusiasm. Russell Stohn, number one man last year, was lost to the tennis team through baseball. However, George Offer, a veteran of last sea- son, filled his place well. The versatile Mr. Morse was again the mentor of the team. He was assisted by Miss Paulson, who coached the girls. Our seniors may well be proud of this year's team. They played good tennis and showed excellent sportsmanship. Three of the boys and all of the girls on the team were members of the senior class. The team was picked by an elimination tournament held before the opening of the season. The players chosen are as follows: Boys Girlf George Offer Doris Larsen Gerard Riedel Elizabeth Tobey Kenneth Mulcahy Alice Record joseph hdurphy Louhe jordan joseph Lauzon Louise Bayles Victor Schmidt Ruth Dorr james Wilson janet A. Smith Page 106 r- " A "mn" ' AA litre lu WHICH.. c' Rifle Club THE twenty boys and twenty girls of the club are taught correct han- dling of the rifle and the positions for shooting. Good sportsmanship is one of the aims of the organization. A girls' team and first and second class boys' teams entered competi- tion from the high school. The T. H. S. Rifle Club is a member of the National Rifle Associa- tion and many of the members have received medals from the association for having attained varied records of accuracy. Faculty Advisers Mr. Rice Mr. Kroner Mr. Dudley Miss Brewster Page 107 Wrestling ENTERING the second year of interscholastic competition the Blue and White Wrestling team emerged undefeated. Leonia twice and Emerson once furnished the opposition. On the completion of the season they entered the state tournaments. Captain "Duke" Crandall and Ed Peterson reached the Hnals. Crandall was eventually pinned by the state champion and Peterson lost on a time decision. The enviable record of the team and our representation in outside meets, such as the A. A. U., in which Peterson took part, has awakened a wide interest in the sport-so much so as to have one hundred boys participate in a school tournament and to have a number of the squad take part in a matinee at Hackensack. The grapplers under the tutelage of Coach Guiler leave promises of a strong and experienced squad. Four members of the team are expected to graduate, but they leave able substitutes.
