COMMANDI OFFICER COMMANDER ROBERT E. ADLER, USN Commander Robert E, Adler entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1947, and in June 1951, was graduated and commissioned an Ensign. Immediately following graduation he served for two months as an instructor at the Academy. From September 1951 to August 1953 he was stationed aboard the attack carrier USS TARAWA QCVA 401 as the assistant navigator. From September to February 1953, he was attached to USS LSMR 525 as Executive Of- ficer and navigator. From March 1955 to June 1956, Commander Adler served as Command- ing Officer of the coastal minesweeper USS KINGBIRD QMSC 1945. Entering the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in July 1956, he was graduated in July 1959 with a master of science degree in electrical engineering. While at the Post Graduate School he received an award from the Institute of Aeronauticl' Sciences for his contribution to research In June 1959, he reported aboard the destroyer USS BLANDY QDD 9435 and served as o erat' ff' ' ' p ions o icer. Departing the BLANDY in February 1961, Commander Adler became Executive Officer of the USS NORRIS QDD 8493. In August 1962, he reported to the London branch of the Office of Naval Research and was designated science liaison officer. While serving there he received the Navy Com- mendation Medal. In March 1966, Commander Adler reported to the staff of Commander FIRST Fl eet and for the next two years served as surface operations officer. While serving there he received a gold star in lieu of a second award of the Navy Commendation Medal. Commander Adler assumed command of the USS TAUSSIG QDD 7465 on June 5, 1968.

COMMANDI OFFICER CAPTAIN SAMUEL L. GRAVELY, JR., USN , if if' 1 ef Captain Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., USN, attended Armstrong High School and Virginia Union University prior to entering the U.S., Navy as an Apprentice Seaman in 1942. In October, 1943 Captain Gravely was selected to attend an officer training program at the University of Cali- fornia at Los Angeles. Upon completion he was assigned to Columbia University Where he com- pleted Midshipmens school and was commissioned an Ensign on December 14, 1944. Captain Gravely's naval service includes service during World War II, the Korean War, and the present Vietnam conflict. He has served on the following vessels: USS PC 1264, USS IOWA QBB 615, USS TOLEDO QCA 1335, USS SEMINOLE QAKA 1043, USS THEODORE E. CHAND- LER QDD 7175, USS FALGOUT QDER 3241, and USS TAUSSIG. Captain Gravely commanded the latter three Destroyers. His shore assignments have included duty as -Assistant to the Officer in Charge, US Naval Recruiting Station, Washington, D.C., District Security Officer, Staff Commandant Third Naval District, New York, and Program Manager for the National Emergency Airborne Command System of the Defense Communications Agency, Arlington, Virginia. He also attended Naval War College in 1963-1964. Captain Gravely wears the following medals and decorations: Joint Services Commendation, World War II Victory, American Defense, United Nations, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, U.S. Naval Reserve, Korean Service ftwo starsl, China Service, National Defense, Armed Forces Expeditionary, and Vietnam Service. Commander Robert E. Adler relieved Captain Gravely as Commanding Officer of the USS TAUSSIG on June 5, 1968.

U n His first duty was in the pre-commissioning detail for the USS TULARE Q D po her commissioning in January 1956, he served variously as Signal Officer, Communica- tions Officer, Assistant Engineering Officer, and Gunnery Officer, In August 1958, he was ' ' USS GURKE QDD 7831 in detached and proceded, via Air Intercept Controller course, to San Diego, serving for two years as CIC officer, Operations officer, and Navigator. In S t b r 1960 LC DR Lotton reported to his first shore duty as Surface Plot Officer! ep em e , Admiral's Operations Briefer on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, ' ' ' USS JOHN in Pearl Harbor. In 1962, he served as Executive Officer and Navigator on WILLIS QDE 10275, This tour was cut short in July 1964 for attendance at the U.S. Naval P t du te School Monterey, California. Completing the Personnel Management Course os gra a , in August 1965 LC DR Lotton was assigned as the Officer Data Section Head in the Bureau of Naval Persohnel, On December 8, 1967, he was ordered to the USS TAUSSIG as EX- ecutive Officer. LC DR Lotton wears the National Defense and Vietnam Service Medals. He was pro- moted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander July 1, 1964.
