'U-'rv' A variety of small fishing craft, junks, and merchant ships were seen by the crew as the ship made the daily transit in and out of the mouth of the Saigon River in the early days of June. The most familiar sight, however, was the Navy's newest con- tribution to the river, the Swift Boat . Nearly every day the crews of the Swift Boats came aboard the Taussig for a hot meal or a chance to buy from the ship's store. Below, an Army spotter and several South Vietnamese officers land their helicopter on the Taussig's helo deck in order to come aboard for a briefing and a hot lunch.

The Taussig was alongside anoiler for refueling 34 fi it 4 times, alongside an ammunition ship 11 times, alongsidea stores ship 8 times, and had Qmiscellaneous cargo or per- sonnel transfers. Averaging two lines per replenishment, the Taussig took aboard more seamanship lines than moor- ing lines used. The most strenuous and dangerous replen- ishments are those alongside an ammunition ship and the Taussig again illustrated its Number One ranking when it set a new WESTPAC record on the 8th of June when 106 tons of ammunition were transfered in one hour.
