HI TORY OF THE CRUI E On 19 April 1963, The USS TAUSSIG CDD-7465 sailed out of San Diego harbor and headed for Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. We were in company with the USS KEARSARGE CCVS-335, The USS jOHN W. THOMASON CDD-7605, The USS jOHN A. BOLE CDD 7555, and The USS LOFBERC CDD-7595. After arriving in Hawaii we took part in the recovery of astronaut Cordon Cooper and also participated in an anti-submarine warfare operational readiness exercise. On 4 june we left beautiful Hawaii, and, accompanied by Destroyer Division 253 transited to Sasebo, japan, arriving there on 16 june. To many of us, japan was com pletely new. Others had been here in the past and were happy to return. Our next stop was Osaka, the San Francisco of japan. Many of us saw the exciting japanese baseball games and almost everyone was impressed by the huge department stores We left japan and journeyed to Okinawa where we stopped shortly, and then pushed on to the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. After six days of hurried shopping and frantic fittings, we left Hong Kong, broke but happy, the ship riding a foot lower in the water due to the newly stowed gear. After being chased all over the Pacific Ocean by typhoons, we pulled into Yokosuka on were visits to Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, and Kamakura, and another spending spree at the government facilities on the base. On 4 September, after a much deserved rest, we got underway and steamed to the rest and recreation port of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. This small japanese town appeared poor but the people treated us royally. While there we had about 6000 visitors on board. On 18 September we steamed into the Sea of japan for one week of joint operations with the japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. This was followed by a one week stay in Sasebo, our last visit to that port. We again transited to Yokosuka for a one week upkeep period before heading south to Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands. Following this we made our last trip to japan. This last week of the cruise was spent in frantic attempts to get the ship ready to head for home, get one last look at the beautiful island of Honshu and empty our pockets and jill all available space on the ship with a variety of goods from silverware to tape recorders. At last that great day came. On 21 November, 1963, the TAUSSIC sailed out of Yokosuka, out of japan, and out of Westpac to return to the greatest land of all, the U S. A. On 4 December, after Fourteen days at sea, we sailed into San Diego to complete our journey and end another Westpac cruise. g August 22 for a long awaited and desperately needed two week upkeep period.
