Even though it took a while and a tremendous amount of hard work on the part of many , it was well worth it. Tates Creek can now be proud of the finest high school stadium in the stateg seating 7,000 spectators. The facility has been the inspiration for a winning season this year and no doubt will be for years to come. During halftime of the game, which T.C. won 15-7, the Homecom- ing Queen and her court were crowned. From left on the opposite page: Beverly Lucas, first attendant, Carol Clark, Queen, Lori Couzens, second attendant, and Mary Pat Wheeler, third attendant. Escorts were Richard Withrow, Tommy Phillips, Ryan Stone, and Doug Ferrell respectively. Vim , 1-1, Presentation of the twenty-two candidates for Homecoming Queen was the most elaborate ever at T.C. The girls, each sponsored by a school organization, paraded around the stadi- um in convertibles. As each girl reached the side opposite the T.C. fans, she met her es- cort and walked down the 50 yard line through the Band, which was in a large "T" formation. The winners were announced and Mr. Thomas, County Judge Robert Stevens, and T.C. 's 1969 Queen, Barbara Stokley, crowned Carol Clark 1970 Homecoming Queen. The game was fol- lowed by a dance in the Student Center with music provided by the Free Reign from Chicago x if ., M ... ,, ,, Qu., t lv' . V f' 'S 1 ,,., i Kg - 9 4 'x x A 1 'mi I l Q, U . The biggest upset produced by the team was the double header that T. C. won over Elizabethtown, 1970 State Champi- ons. Although favored to win the district and possibly the state, T, C. lost to l-lemy Clay in the opener of the district tourney. This year's team set new records with three batters hitting over .400, and a team average of . 346. The team was led in hitting by John Vandermale, Craig Wilkie, and Ben Bransom. Ben, voted most valuable offensive player, hit a tremendous .516 and got 12 home runs, three of which came in one game. Leading defensive players were Bill Papania, and Steve Gilvin. Ed McCaw, the winningest pitcher ever at T, C. , Mike Richie, and Fred Nelson headed the pitching roster. All the boys played as a team , using all their ability and determination to win. Coaches Ron Cole and C. D, Gentry put all these qualities together, and with a little help from the Hershey Choco- late Company, produced the best team ever at 'T.C, ! , 1, .f was . Thomas has spent the last 18 years in the field of educationg He was Tates Creek's first Principal and played an instrumental part in developing Tates Creek into one of the best high schools in the state, Having received his A.B. from Transylvania in 1951 and his M.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1952, Mr, Thomas began his teaching career at Breckenridge County High. Four years later, Mr. Thomas moved to Lafayette where he taught United States History, After teaching for four years, he was made Associate Principal at La- fayette. His next move was to Tates Creek. ' Opening a new high school required a lot of hard work, but Mr. Thomas did not give in. Mr. Thomas remembered when Tates Creek opened in 1965, the student body totaled 625 and lunch was served in the halls due to the lack ofa cafeteria, After serving as Principal for six years, Mr, Thomas made another move. This one led to Co-ordinator of Vocational Education for the Fayette County Schools. lt is with a sense of loss and appreciation for his service to education and Tates Creek High School, that we the Senior Class of 1971 dedicate this the 1971 Com- pass to Mr, A, C. Thomas. We know that he will continue to be a success and wish him the best of everything in his new job. x i e-. wx . 17... , Q" H ., xg JA . ': Q . FEP- .
