WILSON Youx first year as principal was certainly a hard one. And we as Seniors didn ' t make it any easier for you. In the fall of the year, we presented you with a list of Senior privileges that we wished to have. With all your problems and hardships, you kindly took the time for your busy schedule to consider this list. We held a grudge for a while because we felt you gave us an empty bag, but most of us finally realized the why in your reasoning and most importantly that you hadn ' t just thrown them away, which you surely could have; but you studied them carefully. We complained right much, too -- blindly not seeing that for every- thing you did there was a valid purpose behing your motive. And after all the nightmares we gave you, you still consented to chaperon us on our trip to New York. What a fabulous chaperon we found you to be! And so, we at the last graduating class of Tappahannock High School, the class of 1970, proudly dedicate this annual to the man we feel should deserve some credit and recognition for making the last year one of the best, Mr. Wayne Flip Wilson. Mr. Wilson happily displays his white tie given to him by the SC A. 6 rmi This year ' s SC A took part in many activities. The SCA sponsored Homecoming which turned out to be the best yet. It also sponsored Rat Week and White Christ- mas. Because the newly formed Photography Club was in financial need, the SCA helped sponsor a movie and gave all proceeds to the Photography Club. During the summer of 69, Keith Carpenter, SCA Pre- sident, Tommy Blackwell, District Chairman, and Mrs. Durham, SCA sponsor attended the SCA Summer Workshop where they gained valuable information in producing an effective SCA. The SCA Executive Committee was very proud to be able to take part in solving problems for the new high school to be formed as they worked with the SCA Execu- tive Committee from Essex County High School. 8 Mrs. Durham, SC A Sponsor, lends a helping hand to Homecoming workers . We took activities and planned work that followed the theme. During FHA week we also planned activities that would make other people aware of our purposes. We met with each other twice a month -- one meeting for a program and one to take care of our business. This was a new policy and we found it to be very satisfactory. 18 Lynn Silva and Brooke Kriete work hard on their Related Arts Scrapbook. C. Casey, came to Tappahannock High School. With his guidance and supervision the Dis- tributive Education Program experienced a very suc- cessful year. The purpose of the Tappahannock Distributive Education program is to give instruction in the field of marketing and distribution and to make the stu- dent aware of his basic civil and social responsibi- lities, to himself and his community. Many T.H.S. students enrolled in this course and strove to reach certain high goals. Under the guid- ance of Mr. Casey and various employers, each stu- dens have received good training and experience as a background for any job they undertake in life. In D.E. students are given the chance to explore many career choices in which they learn while they earn. All of Tappahannock ' s Education students pros- pered from having taken this course. They will be able to use the goals, which they achieved, both now and later in their lives. Mr. J. C. Casey welcomes the Sponsors of the D.E. students to the annual banquet. To begin the activities of Homecoming Weekend there was a parade through the town with floats, bands, and the princesses. Following the parade the mighty warriors met the Tigers of Washington and Lee for the Homecoming football game. During the half-time of the game, the principal, Mr. Wilson, welcomed the guests, friends, alumni, and students. The winning floats were announced. The 1st place float was the eight grade, second place went to the eleventh grade, and the third to the Senior Class. Finally the moment for which everyone had so long awaited arrived when Coach Ashton took the micro- phone and introduced the princesses from each grade. Students dance to music provided by the Disciples of Sound. When the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars, then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars. This is the dawning of tire Age of Aquarius . Secretive glances passed from one Senior to another hush hush groups formed to discuss top secret plans. Yes, prom time had definitely arrived. The Age of Aquarius with it ' s overhanging sta rs and tables with candlelight helped to provide a romantic scenery. As the dancing began, Seniors happily looked about the world they had created. No detail in making their setting authentic had been overlooked; even zodiac posters were hung. Time, however, soon slipped by. Midnight approached and couples left with a somewhat nostalgic feeling. The Age of Aquarious left a beautiful memory to cher- ish. John Ware does his traditional tap dance. Freshman Elsie Rose points out even seniors make mistakes. ONE-ACT PLAY RECEIVES SUPERIOR RATING So help me if you ' re hiding that spy . . . Once again Mrs. Spindle produced a superior rated play. The setting of The Clod was a border state between the north and the south during the civil war. Keith Carpenter a northern soldier who was running from Bill Watts and Dan Montague, two southern soldiers took refuge in a farm house owned by an old farmer Tommy Blackwell and his wife Glenda Wilkerson. In the end the two south- ern soldiers are killed by the farmers wife. 33 CLASS OF 70 PRESENTS “OUR TOWN” On Friday night, May 8, the senior class presented its annual play. This year the class of 1970 selected Thorton Wilder ' s Our Town . The plot revolved around two fam- ilies, the Webbs and the Gibbs, in the small New England town of Grovers Corners, New Hampshire during the early 1900 ' s. Much imagination was left up to the audience in that there were few props and much pantomime. The cast however was successful in their characterization and the senior play was once again considered a success. Simon Stimson asks the choir to sing softer. The audience asks Editor Webb about Grovers Corners ATHLETICS FIRST ROW: B. Durham, D. Stalnaker, R. Elbourn, B. Watts, T. Blackwell, W. Thompson, W. Ferry, D. Thomas, R. Taylor. SECOND ROW: T. L. WARRIORS DEFEAT ARCH-RIVAL REBELS This year the Warriors were a lot smaller team physically than in past years but this in not really the excuse for the poor season. At first the Warriors were a sound team. They worked hard and had tremendous spirit. But then disaster hit. By the end of the season the Warriors had ten first string players sitting on the bench with injuries leaving many inexperienced players on the field. Because of the many injuries, some of the key players found themselved playing both offense and defense which delivered a big risk for more injuries. The high point of the season was the Rappahannock game which the Warriors won 8 to 6 . With 34 seconds left in the game, quarterback Tomrr Blackwell called a sleeper play in which he connected a pass to Junior Martin for the tieing touchdown. With r 4 seconds left on the clock, the Warriros lined up to kick the extra point. However the War- riors faked the kick and Billy Lumpkin, the kicker, passes to Raymond Elbourn in the end zone for the winning two points. This year Tommy Blackwell was named an All-District Guard. Also Junior Martin received an Honorable Mention for All-District End and Bill Wotts received an Honorable Mention for All-District Halfback. 36 Co- Captains Tommy Blackwell (14) and Bill Watts (21). This year the Warriors acquired a new head bas- ketball coach with high hopes of a winning season. Although the Warriors did not have a winning 69-70 season, they did have a successful season in other ways than winning. Head coach, James Polk, worked with his team and brought forth one of the highest shooting percentages that a Warrior team has had for many years. Guard Randolph Taylor broke a school scoring record and also finished fifth in the league in field goal percentage. Overall the Warriors had a fine team both offensively and defensively and will look forward in hope of a winning season when they combine with Essex High School next year. 40 Harry Clark scores against Richmond County. The 1969-1970 Warrior girls emerge as number one with the great coaching of Mrs. McCloskey. The worked extremely hard during the games and especially at practices where it seemed Mrs. Mac continuously kept them running. The undefeated girls worked together as a team, which led to their victorious season. Each girl tried to help her teammates so they could achieve their goal -- being number 1 ! The team will be losing four starting seniors: Peggy Griggs -- high scorer, Jane Baylor, Glenda Wilkerson, and Billie Ann Elliott, but will be looking forward to another successful season with its remaining starters: Robin Hammond, and Nancy Parrish. Agnes Andrews, Sue Ball, Laurie Brown, and Beverly Daniel backed these girls strongly throughout their winning season. 42 DISTRICT F CHAMPIONS! The girls began by winning their first three games, but ended up losing the last three, finishing the season with a 3-3 record. The softball team will be losing five first string players, but the players succeeding them will hopefully develop into a better team next year. Patricia Simmons goes to bat to try to bring in some runs. 46 Glenda Wilkerson produces a hit against Rappachan- nock. Debbie Bareford scores for the Warriors. The Captains call the girls together for a brief meeting before going into action. Nancy Connellee prepares to bunt the next pitch. Mr. Robertson calls a ball as Marion Martin scoops the ball out of the dirt. 47 WARRIROS SEND REPRESENTATIVE TO STATE MEET The Warrior track team started the season well with a strong victory over Middlesex High School but soon found the going rough as they met stronger op- ponents following successive defeats to the Rebels of Rappahannock, the Warriors worked hard toward the upcoming district meet. Although the team point leader Harry Clark was not up to par due to illness the Warriors were stull able to compile 14 1 2 points in the district meet. Dann Brown, distance runner for the Warriors, was the only partivipant in the state track meet, coming in 4th in the mile run. The double schedule of girls ' and boys ' basketball games kept the Varsity cheerleaders exceedingly busy but their spirit was never dampened. They provided pep and enthusiasm for each game even though the Warriors were not always on top. Mrs. Montague, sponsor for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, proved to be a tremendous aid as she brought new leadership, ideas, and concern. 52 The Tappahannock Warriors take Miss Victory ' (Bill Watts) for a ride. And we cried! But why the tears -- what were they for? They were for memories that we did not want to be relegated into the past. They were memories of Slaving at the concession stand, chanting We ' re Warriors Born , Constructing an eight foot record player, begging for Senior privileges, memorizing lines from Macbeth, promoting Peace , struggling through College Boards, watching Rico Rizzo walk in Washington, serving at an F.L.B.A. dinner, creating an Age of Aquarius out of the cafeteria, receiving wierd gifts from the Juniors at the Banquet, night- time Senior play practices, autographing the back walls of the auditorium, dreaming of the white lights of Broadway after a magnificent performance of Our Town , taking advantage of being eighteen in New York, listening to a Don ' t you worry bout it Baccalaureate sermon, burning up on stage graduation night and cooling off at the Senior party, and finally realizing that we, the class of ' 70, were the last class that would ever gradu- ate from Tappahannock High School. And so, as we the last graduating class of THS reluctantly depart the smiling faces of the underclassmen, the needed guidance and supervision of our teachers, the friendly halls and walls of THS, with our admiration for our principal, with our outstanding school spirit, with our love for sports and with our love for one another, we trust that the students of THS, will continue to strive, to seek and to find ways to work with all their power to make Essex High School an outstanding replica of Tappahannock High School. 95 Jane Waring Baylor Wright Ferry takes time off from his strenuous studying to be caught by the photographer. On a hot June 12, Forty -three condidates proudly recieved their diplomas from thier principal Mr. Wilson. Dr. Passage was the guest speaker. At the closing, the last graduating Class of THS marched sadly out of the auditorium. Dr. Passage talks to the graduates about their future . Mr. Wilson hands Dan Montague his long awaited diploma. We have loved it, cherished it, admired it, promoted it, cheered it, and have put it upon a pedestal. But now Essex High School must take its place. We must love it, cherish it, admire it, promote it, cheer it and put it upon a pedestal just as we have done for THS. We must support the Trojans dressed in Purple and Gold just as we supported the Warriors dressed in Maroon and Gold, and we will. And so, as THS fades away like a dream, we will always have fond memories of a school that will remain in the heart of every student. 112 BROOKS ELLIOTT TAPPAHANNOCK PHARMACY Phone 443-3101 Building Contractors Offers students a variety Tappahannock, Virginia of items Your Rexall Drugstore Compliments of TIDEWATER FARM SUPPLY ■ (1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ m a m m ■ | ■ ■ J ■ « m m ■ Serving you for over half a century.
