We started out as "Green Freshmen" with Mrs. Nale as our sponsor. We had nineteen in our class. We gained and lost Phyllis Delp our first year in high school. We also gained Larry Wirth and lost Margaret Schwab. Mr. Harrison was our sponsor in the Sophomore year. We had sixteen members in our class. We had lost Gladys Wilkey during the summer. We got off to a good start in our Junior year with fifteen "Jolly Juniors" with Mr. Harrison as our sponsor. We are sorry to say that we lost Nancy Propst during the summer. We sold Christmas cards and magazines and had a popcorn stand for our money raising campaigns. We gave a class play, entitled "Hob Goblin House" with Mrs. Boots as our director. As Seniors, we started out our last school year with Mr. Scott as principal and Mr. Harrison as our sponsor. We lost two of our classmates during the summerg Kay Hawn and Pamelia Stakley. Bessie Stakley was lost at the end of the first semester, leaving 12 "Dignified Seniors". Some of our money raising campaigns were the concession stand, selling cakes at the ball games, maga- zine subscription sales, a chili supper, and a scrap drive. We also gave a class play called "He Was a Gay Senorita", directed by Mrs. Brammer. This year we are again proud to have Mona McMurtrey and Pat Hazelwood as Cheerleaders. Jeannette Rowings was chosen the D. A. R. Good Citizen to represent our school in the County Contest. Betty Cole was elected the Basketball Queen of 1956-57. Bob Yater and Bill Bush were co-captains of the baseball team and Larry Colson was the captain of the basketball team for the second year. One of the highlights of our Senior year was our trip to New York. We left Indianapolis by way of Trans World Airlines and upon arriving in New York, we checked into our hotel on Times Square. During that day we toured the Radio and T. V. Studios of NBC at Radio City, attended a show at Radio City Music Hall and enjoyed the sights on Times Square that night. The next day we toured Upper and Lower New York, including many of the famous land marks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and many others. The following day we enjoyed a boat ride around Manhattan Island and visited the United Nations building. We had all day Sunday free to plan as we wished. Many of us saw the famous Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue. We left New York that night on a Greyhound Scenicruiser bus by way of the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Turnpikes. We saw Philadelphia, Valley Forge and Pittsburgh. We returned home a tired, but happy group Monday evening. The closing events of our Senior Year were the Junior-Senior Reception: Senior Day, Friday, May 33 Baccalaureate, Sunday, May 5: and Commencement, Tuesday, May 7. 23 l 1 1 1 X 1 K 1 1 1 1 X , J 1 , 1 ' fv. 1 Wg x 1 ,. N PROPHECY .ff As reporters for the Tangier Chronicle, we were assigned to cover the reunion of the Class of '57 as they gathered at the Tangier High School after ten years of separation. Following is a report of our exp- erience. The first to arrive was the sponsor of their class, Mr. Harrison, who is now sports editor for the New York Times. As we were completing our interview with Mr, Harrison, we saw Larry Colson and Bob Norris. Lar- ry, a former basketball star for Tangier High, told us that he is doing very well as a ballet dancer. His manager, Bob Norris, informed us that Larry is now appearing at the Ballet Russe in New York. We then spotted Jeannette Rowings and went immediately to get an interview with this celebrity. As most of you know, Jeannette was elected Miss Tangier and Miss Indiana, and was then chosen Miss America for 1966. Coming to join her was Pat Hazelwood, a former cheer leader for T. H.S. She told us she is now the chief crane operator for the Cory Construction Company. As we glanced around the room, we saw Bob Yater, another former basketball great at Tangier High In our interview with him, we learned that he is living in a pent house apartment in New York and is he- ad of the Ladies' Lingerie Department at Macy's Department Store. Sitting to the right of us now was Betty and Larry Wirth with their famous quintuplets. We went ov- er and talked with them for a few minutes and they told us that they are now living on a chicken ranch in Wyoming. In addition, they have a weekly radio program called "Chickens for Profit". Just arriving at that moment was the world famous bubble dancer, Lois McCol1am. She told us that she had just flown in from Las Vegas where she is appearing at the "Bright Night". This Page Sponsored By: This Page Sponsored By: BALL'S FLOWER SHOP R. E. SMITH Rockville, Ind. It seems he invented a non-parkable chewing gum. This im- mediately secured him a good position with the Wrigley Chewing Gum Company and in no time at all he worked his way up to his present position as president of the company. As we were resting, Mona McMurtrey came along. She was another cheerleader for dear old T, H.S. She told us she is now residing in Florida and that she and her husband own and operate a fishing worm fa- IH1. Glancing over our program, we noticed that Bill Bus, another famous T. H. S. athlete, was going to entertain with a selection from Madam Butterfly. Bill, as most of you know is now a famous opera sing- er. He just recently made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera. The speaker of the evening was the Reverend Kermit D. Crum, Pastor of the Ist. Mission Church in San Francisco. Having gotten most of the information we desired, we left just as Reverend Crum was be- ginnihg his talk, since this was to be a private reunion for the class. We were happy to learn that all of the members of the Class of '57 have been successful and to pass this information along to our readers. We wish this group the very best of luck in the future. CLASS HISTORY On a bright fall day in September, a jolly group of twenty-two Freshmen started at Tangier for a battle with education. After getting down to business, we succeeded in electing our sponsor, Mrs. Iona Nale, and the following class officers: Russell Newnum, President, Richard Bond, Vice-President, Harold Grubbs, Sec. -Treas. g and Joe Riley, Reporter. Having this completed, we spent one happy year together helping one another over every ob- stacle that confronted us. Richard Bunnell joined us in December and Bob Stevens came in March. When May arrived, we gave one huge lunge and landed in various directions whereby our vacations were sp- ent to the best advantage. The next year found us once more assembled in the Sophomore intelligence booth. Upon entering school we found that Janet Cadman, Bill Chard, and Roger Propst had left us to further their education elsewhere and Richard Bond left school entirely. This year under the sponsorship of Mr. Grimes, our President was Harold Gr- ubbs, Vice-President, Pete Newnumg Sec. -Treas. , Richard Bunnellg and Reporter, Joe Riley. Richard Bunnell left our school in January, to enter school in Indianapolis. As we left for destinations unknown, the following spring, we fully realized this year was as great a success as before. Coming back as Juniors, we have waded farther into our tasks before us. Janene Pruitt left our group, but Doyne McMahan joined us. This year our sponsor is again Mr. Grimes and we elected class officers as follows- President, Nancy Norton, Vice-President, Pete Newnumg Sec. , Guyann Gleason, Treas. , Harold Grubbs, and Reporter, Norma Hornbeck. With the participation of each individual and the cooperative action of the rest of the school, the Junior Class is preparing itself for future hardships that are sure to follow. We are hoping for success which we are sure to attain if we will never stop trying. 35 f , . , . , . X . V , N. X 1 - v -L x , . + ' . x r ' ' x f, - , Q n .Q f . SPORTS REVIEW Tangier had one of it's best teams in history this year. The Tigers came through with a record of 21 games won and 4 lost with the great coaching skill of Mr. Harrison. The TIGERS also won the first SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in the schools history. The Tigers were beaten out of the Valley Pre- lims in the final game, after downing Rockville and Mecca, by Rosedale with a score of 45 to 42. In the first game ofthe Sectional after trailing Cayuga all the way Bill Bush stepped up to the charity stripe and for the second time in his career dropped in two free throws to give the Tigers a 35 to 34 victory. In the next two games the Tigers had a little easier time downing Newport 62 to 49 and Montezuma '72 to 60. In the final game the Tigers came out with determination in their eyes and downed the Rockville squad by a score of 42 to 36 for the first Tangier High School Sectional Champion ship in history. The young Tigers show some great prospects for next year as they came out with 16 games won and 2 lost as their record. Here is a record showing the games won and lost.
