Yet occasionally unique combinations of these assets produce marks of excellence in one particular instructor. With this thought in mind, we, as seniors of Tamalpais High School, wish to dedicate this yearbook, a symbol of our pursuits, our successes, and our failures, to Miss Louise Abbott. Our appreciation for the inspiration and creativity fundamental to the atmosphere of her Senior English classes, and for the encouragement given to us through her counseling, cannot be expressed adequately in one dedication. The true measure of our gratitude will be the maturation of her influence after our graduation, as we move through future pathways of life Staff EDITOR . . Norm Kreuter led the team with the scoring coming on two long touchdowns by Ray Edwards. Tamalpais 13- Napa 19 , . . Seemingly play- ing the first half in a daze, the Indians woke too late to win but looked impressive in a last minute drive. Edwards scored both touchdowns. Tamalpais 6- Marin'Catholic 7 . . . The In- dians lost a heartbreaker to Marin Catholic in their first league game. The only touchdown came on a run by Edwards. Tamalpais 31- Novoto 6 . . . The Redmen, led by sophomore Quarterback Tex Hamilton and a sharp defense, went on the warpath against the Hornets. Pat Morgan received Prep of the Week honors for his strong play. Tamalpais 19- San Rafael 13 . . . A highly spirited Tam team entered the traditional Big Game with intentions of beating their old rival. It was led to victory by Rayfield Edwards, Prep of the Week for his explosive running, and Ed Collins. Tamalpais 13- Vallejo I9 . . . Playing a sur- prisingly weak Vallejo team, Tam could never quite get anything going and came out on the losing end. Tamalpais 7- Redwood 20 . . . Although a spirited Tam team entered the game with high hopes, it was overwhelmed by the Giant tide. TAMALPAIS 31- DRAKE 0 . . . In the official Big Game of the season, the Indians, led by Big Game Queen Gena Dazey, played a slow first half and then exploded for nineteen points in the third quarter to close the season on a happy note. 109 Freshman Football Coach Ed Chavez and Coach Jim Fitz- gerald took a large but enthusiastic group of freshman boys and formed a well-organized precision machine that virtually roared through the season without absorbing a single loss. Coming from St. Mary's High School in Berkeley, Coach Chavez took over a squad that was named pre-season to the favorite's role in the County league, with letterman and regulars Ray Edwards, Conrad Hoetger, Russ Cook, and Bob Hector the nucleus around which he was to build his championship squad. Conn received Prep of the Week for his outstanding effort in this first league game of the season. Charles Bullock was the straw that broke the Wildcats, back in the sec- ond game as he led the Indians to a 48-45 victory. Surrounded by Drake assailants, Ray Edwards, center, prepares to pass to a waiting team mate. DRAKE... 2-0 Tam again played an outclassed opponent in the Pirates from Drake. Scoring two easy victories, the Indians managed to set a league record in the second game by pulling down 64 rebounds. Coach Chavez again used these games to prepare the reserves for the coming years. 120 NOVATO . ., 2-0 Tam proved to be too much for the outclassed Hornets from Novato as the Indians took both games with relative ease. In the first game Ray Edwards could not miss, as he scored 15 points in three quarters. Coach Chavez used both games to give his reserves playing experience. Hinky Kreuter prepares to do battle with the Pirates from Drake, but Stretch Mitchelle comes to the rescue. In the first game Conn led the team in scoring with nineteen points, but Ray Edwards re- ceived 'fPrep of the Week honors for his fine re- bounding. The second game was played after the championship had been won, so Coach Chavez used his reserves liberally. Hinky Kreuter shows some of the form that took the sting out of the Hornets. REDWOOD . . . 2-0 Against Tam's arch rivals, the Giants from Red- wood, the Indian basketball team gained revenge for the football loss in the fall by scalping the Giants twice. Bob Hector turned in a fine floor game in the first game, and Russ Cook received Prep of the Weeki' for his fine play in the second game as he led the In- dians to a 63-46 trouncing. Ray Edwards and Charlie Bullock also turned in fine performances. 121 LIGHTWEIGHT BA SKETBA LL TEAM Coach A1 Ahlsten In his first year as coach, Al Ahlsten had one of the more successful Lightweight Basketball seasons of recent years. He completed the league season with a respectable five and five record. This year's team had only one senior in comparison to five freshmeng this fact promises good things in the years to come. Inexperienced juniors proved themselves throughout the season as Bob Melburn, Danny Mayer, and Mike Zifcak turned in excellent performances many times. What this year's team lacked in height and ability, they ably compensated by drive and determination. I think our great desire and consistency have led us to thc Tournament of Champions. Thus Coach Chavez summed up Tam's first M.C.A.L. basketball championship season. Although Tam lost both games it played in the tour- nament, the team represented Marin County with credit, the rooters winning the coveted Spirit Trophy. Lightweight divers i A Diving Coach Jim Fitzgerald Rick Reels Sandy English Tam's Varsity diving team is expect- ed to make a clean sweep of it in the league race this season. A combination of Sandy English and Rick Reels, both excellent divers, could very easily prove to be the deciding factor in any swim meet. Lightweight divers are also quite strong this year with Cary Carillo lead- ing the way. VARSITY SWIMMING Varsity Swimming Captain Kirk Laurie Captain Bill Emerson Tam's Varsity swimming team, after tying for the league championship with Redwood last year, is back this season attempt- ing to duplicate its last effort. Led by Bob and Jack Mosher, Kirk Laurie, Bill Emerson and Rick Snow, the team hopes to win the first Marin County Athletic League Swimming championship. Kirk Laurie and Bill Emerson captain the team. Coach George Gustafson has nothing but praise for his fine team, but he especially singles out the improvement of senior Ken Schultz and freshman Jack Martin. Bob Harrison, Captain Steve Dazey, and Captain Lloyd Potts have repeatedly taken first places in all meets. This year's team could quite easily be another of Gus' cham- pionship B teams as they are breaking all records in winning. The light- weight team is the driving force behind the varsity, too. These are the boys who will someday be the varsity squad. Coach Gustafson would like to make a sweep of all the classes of swimming in the first Marin County Athletic League season. Lightweight Swimmin Varsity Baseball Tam's Varsity baseball coach, Ray Bell, feels that 1960 may be a re- building year. With only two seniors returning to the squad, Dave Broome and Frank Brunini, no experienced pitchers and virtually an all-junior team, Coach Bell is rather pessimistic about his chances in the league race. But if the team were to hit its stride before the league season opened, they might continue on to win the championship. At any rate the prospects for next season will be very bright. On the mound for the Indians are juniors Russ Adams, Norm Kreuter and Bill Daniels with Bob Melbern behind the plate. Looking good in the field are seniors Lou Piver and Dave Broome, juniors Butch Herr, Ed Collins, Danny Meyer, Bill Hur- ley. Coach Bell hopes that any injury to key player Frank Brunini will not seriously affect the teamls league chances this season. Coach VARSITY BASEBALL Captain Ray Bell Dave Broome 131 132 ! Although inexperienced and young, they play a hustling brand of baseball and should make a good showing in league play., Their per- formance this year indicates that the future of var- sity baseball is looking especially good as we go to press. Russ Boates, Tex Hamilton, Micky Johnston, and Pete Hindley are the prospects for next season's varsity who appear outstanding in league play this year. l VARSITY TRACK Varsity Track Tam's Varsity Track Team, centering around the nucleus of Ray Ed- wards, Bob Hector, and Russ Cook are expected to fare well in the league race, although the team lacks needed depth in many departments. Coach Glidden Benefield is rather optimistic concerning the team's chances. He feels that if his nucleus can win first places, then the team can win by fol- lowing up with second and third places in several events. Bob Hector is breaking records in the high hurdles, Ray Edwards is doing well in the sprints and high jump, Russ Cook is looking good in the shot, and Mike Sweeney is breaking all records in the 880. Coach Benny feels that there is sufficient talent on the team to compensate for the lack of depth and ex- pects to add another league championship to his already large list, this one being the new Marin County Athletic League championship. Coach Glidden Benefield Coach Al Ahlsten 136 E Class B Track Lightweight Track Coach Al Ahlsten seems to have turned out a championship squad in this year's lightweight team. Tam, always strong in the NB division, has gathered a group of boys who have as yet to taste defeat. Coach Ahlsten predicts that, This year's team will win the championship without much trouble? Led by record-breaking John Harris, Lonnie Carter and Ev White, the team could very well make Coach Ahlsten's prediction become truth. The 'KC' squad, unusually large compared to that of previous years, could very well turn in a championship season of its own and make a clean sweep for Tam in all three divisions. Class C Track Standing- Little, Nelson, Mc Creary, Reed, Neilson, Jennings. Kneeling: Hope, Batz, Bandes, Gustafson, Smith. Varsity Cross Countr Cross Country Coach Glidden Benefield Led by record-setting Bob Hope, the 1959 version of the Tamalpais Varsity Cross Country Team came in second in the new Marin County Athletic League. Although Bob, only a junior , broke records throughout the season, the team lacked the needed depth in reserves necessary to be a strong league contender. With Bob Hope and a number of other lower classman retuming next year, Coach Benefield may very well have another strong team in the making. Record Setter Bob Hope '37 Mike Cooke Mathew Simone Tim Dreyfus Coached again this year by Paul Wata, the golf team should have a greatly improved team over last season. The par breakers will be led by two experienced seniors in Mathew Simone and Richard Neeleyg this will be the third varsity sea- son for both. The remainder of the team will be composed of senior Tim Dreyfus and junior Mike Cooke, who has im- proved enough from last year to make the varsity club. In regard to the season, Coach Wata says, I wouldn't be sur- prised if we finished the season without losing a single match? The team has the potential to fulfill Coach Watais prophecy. Dick Neely Golf 138 Coach Paul Wata 'Q f a it 3' Q l Mail , 3 Brian Laurie Captain Dennis Langhoff Under the guidance of a new coach, Al Powers, the Varsity tennis team will be attempting to repeat the league championship they won in 1959. Captain Dennis Langhoff, only a junior, will once again be heading the team as the first singles man. Junior Bob Hope holds down the second position, with Senior Tom Mathews ably supporting the third Spot. Juniors Steve Clark and Brian Laurie, Sophomore John Christiansen and Senior Ray Grin- sell round out the team. With only two seniors on the team, this year's Varsity looms as a strong threat in the league next season. As to this season, Coach Powers was not being optimistic when he said, I think we can take the league with relative ease. From our first year at Tamalpais, her interest and wealth of information have nurtured in us a desire to learn and grow in an ever-changing world. In the yearbook class we were not students of subject matter, for we created our own. Instead we were students of creative thought with her. With Mrs. Martin's inspiration we were able to develop this presentation of the 1960 PAI.
