SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Carol Ann Pagel President Mary Long Secretary CLASS FLOWER- -White Roses Vice President Herman Sieck Treasurer CLASS COLORS--Navy and White CLASS MOTTO-- We have crossed the bay, the ocean lies before us. The senior class of 1956 entered Tama High School as the largest class that has entered this school to date. Many of the students entered right into high school life by joining clubs, music groups and sports activities. Our first party was given in April and its theme was April Showers . This theme was carried out by decorating the gym with rain drops and umbrellas. As sophomores we had begun to feel at home in THS. A sock-hop was given as our Valentine party and was well at- tended. The junior class play was a mystery entitled Drums of Death . As juniors we also gave the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The Blue Ange1 was our theme and caricatures of angels on clouds were seen on the gym walls. Strips of blue crepe paper sprinkled with silver stars were draped from the ceiling. Don Hoy's orchestra helped finish the set- ting. The Inner Willy was the name of the senior class play. This was the last event in which the seniors entertained their families and friends in the audi- torium of THS. Our class has come a long way from the largest class that has ever entered Tama High. We have lost many of our classmates through the past yearsg but those of us who have strived for our diplomas will always carry a feeling of accomplishment. We have proven ourselves to the school by having many of our classmates participate in music, speech, and athletic activities. Four of our seniors were on the '56 bas- ketball team thatwent as far as the dis- trict meet atlowa City. Ofthese and all the rest of our class, we are proud to say we have crossed the bay, the ocean lies before us . JUNIOR 0 6 y -1- Charles Granger,Jean Backen, Mr. Dim- ir Top Salesmen and Sponsor Small in size but large in volume, the Junior Class was voted Loud Mouths of T.H.S. The Junior Class float won first prize at Homecoming with an original theme, Rock Around the Clock. We Shook the Family Tree, our play, combined with a lot of hard work and lots of fun, turned out to be a suc- cess under the direction of Mrs. Can- ney. The Class party, Christmas in the Air, was very beautifully deco- rated and well attended. Doug Foley and Violet Starits were crowned King and Queen. Amagazine sale was used in mak- ing money for the Prom and also was very successful. Jean Backen and Charles Granger were top salesmen and Leroy Betz was the mystery sales- man. Karen Sturtz found the lost dog. ,.,4d Carnival Concession CLASS Leroy Betz and Karen Sturtz, Mystery Salesman and Dog Winner The class had two concessions at the school carnival. They were the Dart Throw and the Refreshment Stand. The Dart Throw was the best attended concession during the night. Throughout the year the class has made money by selling refreshments at school activities. Candy Land was the theme for our Prom this year. It was very color- fully decorated and was one of the bestin the history of the school. Del Clayton provided music during the dinner and for the dance following. The members of the class placed several in the OwlClub as wellas have many of their members participated in extracurricular activities. The sophomores were represented in nearly every extra-curricular activity this year. The class officers were president, Anne Inglesg vice-president,Butch Loftusg secretary-treasurer, Mary Forrester. These people did a fine job of directing the business affairs of the class. The sophomores joined with the freshmen for the party Showboat . Butch Loftus and Mary Forresterwere crowned king and queen. To help finance theparty the sophomores had a refreshment stand at two basket- ball games. The girls also hada candy sale and the boys donated money. In this class of 62 sophomores there are A-1 scholars, musicians, speakers, and basketball, football, and baseball players. All of these go to make up one of the best sophomore classes that Tama High School has ever had. Larrie Kasal and Darwin Zhorne were crowned king and queen of the freshmen party held last fall. Faith Lewis, Karen Cooper, Leroy Kellogg and Larry Riffle were attendants. For the first time freshmen sold at two bas- ketball games. Though they had their troubles they had their fun and earned money, which went toward their party. The freshmen will never forget the speech c onte st with which they helped. Some were timers, others were guards, and others took or sold tickets. Gene Zhorne was one of those performers that came thru when team points were really needed. Some of his accomplishments are: lst and 2nd in the High and Low Hurdles at the 1955 State Indoor meetg 2nd in the Highs at the State Outdoor meet: lst in the Lows at the 1956 State Indoor meetg 2nd in both the Highs and Lows at the State Outdoor meet plus the fact that he bettered the State High Hurdle record for Class He holds the county and conference records in both the Highs and Lows. La Vern Zobel was definitely one of the States best High Jumpers. His jump of 6'3 at the State A. A. U. meet will stand for some time. Some of his accom- plishments are: lst at the 1955 State Indoorg lst at the 1955 State Outdoor: tie for lst at the Drake Relaysg and a new record at the 1956 State Indoor meet. Bob Crabtree is definitely worthy of mention because of contributions to track the last three years. ln many of the meets he finished 2nd to Zhorne. He won the 1956 Conference Discus throw and has contributed many points toward the success of the track team. Chris Youngbear as a Sophomore now, shows every indication of becoming one of the States better milers. He has finished in 1st place in the last four meets of the season and was 3rd at the 1956 State Outdoor. LOFTUS GROCERY, CANDY KITCHEN AND TAVERN -16 X,, , g A f-A G., av., l...,.,,, 4 savvy.-Q. Probaly one of the outstanding feats of the year was the performance of only five members at the district meet which brought T.H.S. another tro- phy. All five qualified, in one or more events, for the State Outdoor Meet. In the field events, H. Sieck won the discus: with a throw of 1l8'6 and Bob Crabtree taking forth. Gene Zhorne tied for first in the High Jump and B. Crabtree tied for third also in the High Jump. Gene also won both the High and Low Hurdles with Bob Crabtree taking second in both events. Bob Waseskuk won first in the Broad jump with a jump of 18'6 . In the running events Chris Youngbear took a first place in the mile, 4.45 time, which was his best for the year. During basketball s e a s o n they worked hard to raise money to buses to out-of-town They had candy sales during the noon hours, and sold mega- phones at home games. Through these means they were able to take a pep bus to all the County Tournament games. The queen, Madonna Spickert and her attendants, Mary Ann Willett, Mary Lou Hofer, Gerie Dufour, and Janice Johnston were all chosen from the senior class by the student body. At the half-time of the Tama-Brooklyn game the queen and her attendants were driven onto the field in con- vertibles supplied by Mr. L.L. Wallace and Dr. A. J. Went- zien, while the football boys formed a line from the side- lines to the center of the field, through which the queen and her attendants passed, es- corted by the king, football captain, Eugene Zhorne, and his attendants, Ralph Went- zien,Bob Turner,BillSpooner, and Bob Waseskuk. They then formedasemi-circle,and Eu- gene placed a crown of red roses on Madonna's head, and presented her with a corsage of yellow pom-poms tied with ablack and gold tie. The other attendants then followed suit. The band played the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi while the queen and attendants were escorted back to the cars. HOMECOMING The homecoming was kicked aff by a roaring pep assembly in which the four classes pre- sented their floats. The junior class for the second year in suc- cession won a toy football for the best float. It was a large football made of black and gold paper mache'. On top of this was a miniature football field with players representing Tama and Brooklyn. In the background was a score board that went around and its slogan was Rock Around Brooklyn . The juniors also won the loud-rnouth contest, whichis held at the homecoming pep assembly each year. The cheerleaders give a yell with each class to see which can yell the loudest and this same class won it last year. The homecoming game it- self between Tama and Brooklyn was quite avictory for Tama as they won with a rousing score of 31-O.
