DEDICATIO A23 We the members of the class of 1954 dedlcate thls thtrty second volume of the Iuka to our frrends the Mes quakre trrbe of Tama Iowa The people of Tama so adjacent to the only Indran reservatron 1n the state cannot reflect upon the hrstory of therr crty and state wrthout assocratmg rt w1th that of the Mesquakre Indtans who have played such a promr nent part rn the lrfe of the early settlers of our state Only a part of these people ltve on the reservatron here The rest are rn Oklahoma The tr1be was d1v1ded after the government moved them to Kansas rn 1842 A partof the trrbe drd DOI l1ke Kansas and moved back to Iowa Others were sent later to Oklahoma The members of the trxbe rn Iowa bought 3200 acres of land rn Tama County and have 120 famrlres now l1v1ng on thrs reservatron The 520 people raxse gardens next to thelr yards and rn these they supply most of thelr food In days gone by when there were no schools the chrldren had to be taught by therr parents and grandparents They now go to school rn a large whrte school house There are 99 puprls that study scrence language spell mg sewmg arrthmetxc art and mustc When they graduate from th1s grade school many come to our hrgh school Many of these lndtan students are outstandrng rn sports and art as well as scholastrc abrllty They are a pleasure to work w1th and have added greatly to the betterment of our school Not to be overlooked IS the annual pow wow held each August Many people from allover the Unlted States travel to Iowa durmg August Just to see thls colorful event They buy the beadwork made especrally for the pow wow and have great fun jornmg 1n the danclng and festrvrtles kln commemoratxon of these people and thetr efforts to make th1s a better communrty we ded1cate the 1954 lu a 2
