CONCERT BAND ACIIIEVES FIRST By victoriously winning eighteen firsts in the pre-state music contest, the 1947 concert band made a new record under the direction of R. Ariel Cross. The hand. six brass groups. the woodwind quartet, and Delores 'l'omlinson. Mary Ann Mochal. Sue Hartsell Peggy Dumhauld, Shirly Moran, Phyllis Frahm, and Dorothy Zearfoss. all soloists. and three student directors went on the state contest. The hand gave three very successful 'iioo Club concerts under the sponsorship of the Band Boosters. At all of these concerts. guest artists were present. Aside from hand, constant rehearsing was going on at full speed hy many groups and soloists. The outstanding groups were the hrass sextet. quintet. and quartet, the horn quartet and trio trumpet trio. the woodwind trio. quartet, quintet, and ensemble, clarinet quartet, and drum quartet. Other soloists were Huhert Rehik, lflla Mae Peters. Ann Peters. Betty Sincox, Ben jones. and Betty Frahm. Much of the success ot' these soloists was due to the accompanists. Catherine Damisch, Peggy Dumhauld, Shirley Moran, Floy Ann Kensinger. and Delores Tomlinson. A new activity of the instrumental department this year was six Sunday afternoon musicals. These pro- grams consisted of various soloists and groups. This gave everyhody a chance to show what they could do and provided very good experience for all who participated. They appeared in the Christmas program and were con- sidered one ot' the outstanding groups at the pre-state contest. Ben Jones. and Vernon Neumann were the soloists from this group. Ben jones received a Division II rating. and the mixed quartet composed of jack XVall4er. Ben jones. Sue Hartsell. and Betty Ann lfrahm received .t Division I at the State contest. A new feature ot' the vocal department was the presentation ot' the operetta. An Old Spanish Custom. It w as a very successful performance. The setting of the stage was that of an old Spanish casa on the rancho of Don Jose. The cast included the following: Mary Ann Ivloclial. Ann Peters. Vernon Neumann, Ifll Mae Peters. Betty Ann lirahm. jack XValker. Ben jones jr.. Paul Maiden. Sue Hartsell. Paul Prusha. Raymond An- derson. x The small groups and soloists who received a division I at the state contest. were sent to the national contest at St. joseph, Missouri. where they all won a second division rating.
