BASKETBALL The basketball team under the guidance of Coach Miller went to the district tournament this year for the first time. The boys didn't fare so well in the conference battles, winning 4 and losing 6. The two teams that beat the locals twice were Belle Plaine and Brooklyn. One of the team's strong points was the oneness with which they played. No stars, every one a part of a machine to t'urn out basketball games and usually good ones. The two most colorful and spirited games were probably the last two Toledo games. After getting beat the first game, the Tamahawks settled down and showed the Raiders such a defensive game that they just couldn't find the basket or a way to get close enough to drop the necessary sphere through the hoop. Traer put it on the local cagers in the county tournament, but in the sectional, Tama beat Toledo and then outclassed the couny champs in a surprise upset to win the tournament. In the district meet, Perry outplayed the Tamahawks to end the first district tournament at which this school has been a representative. At the first of the year, experience was lacking very much. At the end of the year Coach Miller had the fellows playing like veterans. Charles Weir and lames Sheker made the all- sectional-tournament first team and Douglas Dunlap and Milo Quigley made the second team. All in all you can well be proud of this year's basketball team, a team that won 9 and lost lO and played six one-point games. 20
