IUNIOR CLASS ln September, 1935, our class began its high school career. That was the year we were represented at Science Day in Ames. Several of the girls also made the trek to Veishea. The next year saw us struggling through Lincoln essays. However, this, our junior year, was the year. We took charge of a pep meeting at which all juniors felt very silly wearing anything from lampshades to baby bonnets. We sponsored a movie, sold tickets to one-act plays and peddled candy to finance the traditional juniorvsenior prom. The 1938 prom was in keeping with the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Although we enjoyed being juniors we will be very proud when we are seniors. SOPHOMORE CLASS Last year's Freshmen are now a Sophomore class of sixty-five members with new ideas about Freshman-Sophomore parties. This year, since the Freshmen are many, the Sophof mores are giving a picnic for them instead of the regular party. Money for the picnic was raised by twenty-five cent contributions from each member of the Sophomore class. The Sophomores participated in the Pep Assemblies for the basketball team this year by sponsoring one meeting. The highlight of the meeting was Baby Snooks and her father, por- trayed by Evelyn Houdyshell and Charles Masemore. lO son, D. Dunlap, L. Kazda, D. Hall, R. Ryan, H. Davis, E. Krezek, H. Booth. FRESHMAN'CLASS Ten years ago, several small children entered the kindergarten department of the Tama Public Schools. That was the start of the Freshman class of l938. A few left and a few new pupils came into the ranks. The class has come through the years successfully and has made much progress. One of the greatest achievements of this class was graduating from the eighth grade and entering the high school department. Many new pupils were added to the roll call when we came into high school. These mem- bers help to make this a bigger and better class. Under the guidance ot the teachers and the sponsorship of Mr. Miller, this class has suc- cessfully finished its first year in high school and is well on its way to the goal, graduation from Tama High School and success. KAY McKAY CLUB The Kay McKay Club was organized four years ago for freshrnan and sophornore girls and tcr any new upperclass girls who were interested in l-lornenialqing. lt provides a chance for the underclassnien to get into some worthwhile club which will give theni an opportunity to rnake desirable friends and develop character. But the boys can be proud of quite a number of things that go to make up a good team. The fact that Tama recovered l8 fumbles to its opponents l9 clearly shows that the team played heads up football all the way. The fellows played at all times in a clean and sportsmanlilce manner. They were penalized very little in comparison with their opponents, and never was an opponent carried off the field due to unnecessary roughness. Tama placed the following men on allrstar teams: lim Sheker, brilliant end, made first all conference team at right end. Mark Metcalf, a big, fast, and tough tackle, made a place on the all conference and honorable mention on the allrstate team. Delmar McFate made the all conference third team at half-back. BASKETBALL The basketball team under the guidance of Coach Miller went to the district tournament this year for the first time. The boys didn't fare so well in the conference battles, winning 4 and losing 6. The two teams that beat the locals twice were Belle Plaine and Brooklyn. One of the team's strong points was the oneness with which they played. No stars, every one a part of a machine to t'urn out basketball games and usually good ones. The two most colorful and spirited games were probably the last two Toledo games. After getting beat the first game, the Tamahawks settled down and showed the Raiders such a defensive game that they just couldn't find the basket or a way to get close enough to drop the necessary sphere through the hoop. Traer put it on the local cagers in the county tournament, but in the sectional, Tama beat Toledo and then outclassed the couny champs in a surprise upset to win the tournament. In the district meet, Perry outplayed the Tamahawks to end the first district tournament at which this school has been a representative. At the first of the year, experience was lacking very much. At the end of the year Coach Miller had the fellows playing like veterans. Charles Weir and lames Sheker made the all- sectional-tournament first team and Douglas Dunlap and Milo Quigley made the second team. All in all you can well be proud of this year's basketball team, a team that won 9 and lost lO and played six one-point games. 20 Top row: Coach Vanderlinden, . Metcalf, Pagel, D. Dunlap, . As in previous years, this affair was marked in the splendid cooperation of faculty, students, and parents. lanet Sweazey is still Gretel to many of the grade children. Under the direction of Miss Long, Edwin Sincox, Beulah Overturf, lim Thill and Frances Scott were transformed to realistic characters of the wellelcnown story. Each of the upper six grades contributed to special chor- uses and supporting chorus. Mothers were responsible for the costumes. High school students collected properties, sketched scenery, and assisted Miss Hauswirth, Mr. Vanderlinden, and Mr. Hurley, who very capably and generously supervised important details of costuming, staging, and lighting, respectively. 22 ONE ACT PLAYS NEIGHBORS THE FLITTERMOUSE CHERRY SPECIAL SPARKIN A NIGHT IN AN INN SAUCE FOR THE GCSLINGS SENIOR CLASS PLAY I C C '2 1 1-1 Q11 11+:y'f-, ,i 1 II .f1.1 'f' ,wifi 1 x 1 111.
