1933-SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF TAKOMA ACADEMY-1958 Takoma Academy had its beginning in June of 1933. At that time the board of management of Washington Missionary College decided that the Academy students should be organized into a separate school. The purpose of this move was to make available to the students more privileges and opportunities for leadership than they had enjoyed as a secondary part of the College. The basement of Columbia Hall, which had been the College gymnasium, was used to house the new school. It was remodeled and partitioned so that sufficient class rooms, library, principal's office, and assembly room were provided. In 1933 Floyd 0. Rittenhouse was called to be the first princi- pal. A separate faculty was employed, and plans were made to ex- pand the curriculum. A Students' Association was organized. Im- mediately, faculty and students started working for accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary School. This was achieved in the fall of 1934. With the exception of one year, when Hubert E. Redding served as principal, Mr. Rittenhouse remained with the Academy until 1940. At this time Conard N. Rees took over the reins and served until 1947. His administration was interrupted by a one year's leave of absence when Wilton H. Wood was the acting principal. During the fall of 1947, J. Paul Laurence became principal and has served for the past eleven years. It was during the administra- tion of Mr. Laurence that the Academy really achieved its in- dependence, when in 1952 the school was moved to its present location on Carroll Avenue. The Academy has far outgrown its quarters and looks forward to the day when a new wing will be added to the present building. Takoma Academy is proud of its tradition of high Christian standards and superior scholarship. We salute our school on this silver anniversary.
