This year's KI-AH-YU attempts to capture the memories of our days at Tahoma. Soon new tides in new places will rise and fall for us and a new dawn will shine... T4H0MA llll ll SCHOOL MAPLE VALLEY, WASHIGM KI-AII-YU STAFF Janet Dunlap, co-editor; Mr. Ziegner, adviser; Vicki Bennett, advertising manager; Pam Thompson, business manager. Marion Niemela co-editor Our thanks go to Mr. Ziegner for his valuable advice, and to Mr. Gatz for his excellent photography. We hope you will enjoy this yearbook as much as we enjoyed putting it out. KI-AH-YU STAFF 4 5 Never in the history of mankind has the need been greater for a more highly-trained society. For your own personal welfare and success in life you must seek additional education. The percentage of non-ski lied labor hired by the Boeing Airplane Company has been sharply reduced in the last four years. Our very survival as a nation hangs in the balance. I challenge the students of Tahoma High School to accept their responsibility — train yourself to the utmost of your own capacity — do your part in helping to preserve our democratic way of life and to insure a world of peace for tomorrow. LYMAN D. STAMPER Three key words appear in the slogan, Education in CHARACTER, HEALTH, and MIND which has been on your report cards the past two years. The degree to which you have responded to our efforts, the efforts of your parents, and the desirable influences of the community, to help you develop to the fullest in CHARACTER, HEALTH, and MIND, will determine your success or failure. I would emphasize, however, that you should not look upon this development as being finished just because your public schooling is finished. While the mold may be pretty well set, there is one aspect of your character which can be brought into play to overcome even the most glaring deficiencies and help you over the rough spots—it is your public-minded, humanitarian attitude of SERVICE to mankind. If it can always be said of you that, Things are a little better because you passed our way your success and happiness will be assured. I hope that will apply to each of you. Congratulations and best wishes. NEIL HELGELAND 8 IN HONOR of his faithful service on the Tahoma School Board, this year's KI-AH-YU is dedicated to Mr. Gilbert Lobdell, who retired in March of this year. He began his services in 1954 and served as Chairman for four years. Active in the Masons, Grange, and other fraternal and civic groups, Gil has been and continues to be an outstanding member of the community. 9 Marion Morse William Ziegner U.S. History, World Journalism, English Survey 12, Speech 10 tinma Herrin English 10, 11, 2600 James Olson Math. The traditional initiation had been eliminated, so in October we held a Halloween dance for the seniors, just to let them know we realized who was boss. This year we attended our first formal dance, the Homecoming, and, for this year— our first try at high school life, we were led by president, Stephanie Young. Coming back as juniors we numbered only 85. The year started off right when we won $40 for having the most parents attending P.T.A. We donated it towards the lighted bulletin board fund. Some of the more talented juniors tried their hand at the all - school play, Rest Assured. We may have been lacking in brain, but at the junior-senior football game we showed we had brawn by defeating the seniors 7-6. Rusty Holder was our president. The class party was held at Lake Meridian. As sophomores we numbered 88 and Suzy Johnson was elected president. Our main money-making project was selling blue and gold Tahoma pens with the basketball schedule on them. Also we participated in the carnival held in the old gym. Although it was fun, we didn't bring in too much money. Our booth, a balloon shave, made 79 cents. We topped off the year with a class party at Lake Sammamish. A few years older and perhaps a little wiser, we are now 67 mighty Seniors. Dennis Shimono was elected president and moneymaking projects included a car-wash, bake sale, and dance. Our play Finders Creepers was a tremendous success and added $240 to our treasury. Three of the most successful dances were held this year: the Girls' Club Tolo, Homecoming, and the Junior-Senior Prom. Senior Week and Baccalaureate have been eliminated but we still have our cruise, this year a night trip on the Silver Swan, and the all-night party planned by our parents. It's been a long haul, but we finally made it. Next in store will be college, jobs, marriage, the services, and maybe a few class reunions. Now, now, my dear SCHOOL IIOIIIH 4 This year's Tahoma School Board proved too busy to have their pictures taken in time for the early-to-press administrative pages. Here they are, however, in—of all places—the student activity section. Perhaps this isn't a bad idea, though, because these hard-working adults make all of our student activities (and everything else we do at Tahoma) possible. Left to right above are Superintendent of Schools Lyman D. Stamper, Director Don Fern, Director Gilbert Lobdell, Director Arley E. Robinson, Director Joseph E. Lorenz, Administrative Secretary Del Krulikoski, and Board Chairman Guy Belleman. These were the Board members as of March, 1963. Four positions were filled then, but too late for this annual. Previously, however, Arley E. Robinson and Gilbert Lobdell (see dedication page) had announced their retirement, and Don Fern was not subject to reelection. Whatever the present composition of the Board is, we are certain that the members are devoting their time and energy to the improvement of education at Tahoma. 49 Back to front, left to right: Marsha Collins, Shirley Names, Ann Gegoux, Lynda Graveley, Charlotte Rohweder, Linda Stevens, Jenny Pewitt, Joan Holder, Theresa Fisher, Esther Johnson, Joyce Ponchart, Janet Becklund, Sharon Miller, Donna Sauer, Sherry Duren, Suzy Johnson (captain) The Drill Team, formed by Miss Liberty, is now advised by Mrs. Harding. This year's Homecoming is considered one of the most successful events of the year. Instead of only one day, one week of activities was arranged. The week started out with the Coronation Concert and dress-up day. The last day of the week was Blue and Gold Day and ended with a victory of 63-49 over Vashon. Saturday, Jan. 26, climaxed the Homecoming week with a banquet and dance honoring the alumni. Vickie Bennett, Girls' Club President, crowns Jerry Maynard Tolo King. The organization has sponsored both 1962 and 1963 Carnivals, and this year's Senior Dance at Ravensdale, also sponsored by PTSA was very successful. Very few PTSA organizations are in existence. Tahoma's unit and one in Spokane may be the only two in the State. Other purposes of PTSA are to relieve teachers of excessive chaperoning duties and to keep parents informed of school work and activities.
