In his ten years as teacher and coach he has inspired us to do better in our studies even as he has inspired his teams to"think with their heads and play with their hearts." MASSEY It is a real pleasure for me to be able to participate in your Fiesta theme for your annual this year. We can truly feel we are having a "Fiesta" when we think of our school and participate in school activities in the right frame of mind. Our school exists for the purpose of helping the students of Taft in any and all ways that help can be given. We can achieve all goals by pulling together, and success in our work truly means a "Fiesta" for everyone. 714 ff777'7e W. W. COPELAND, IR. You have chosen this year's Tracks theme "Fiesta. " Since it is fitting that the Principa1's message in some way adapt itself to the theme, it is apleasure for me to wish you the spirit of fun and gaiety that are an integral part ofthe fiesta. As life goes along and its adversities bump its path, may humor and an ability to smile carry you over ruts and around the detours. May the enthusiasm and warmth of fiesta remain with you always to keep you aware of goals worth achieving and joys worth appreciating. Sincerely, W1 W. W. Copeland, Ir. Zzculfy H. E. This year's team had an unusually "tough" schedule, playing many schools much their superior in enrollment. The Hounds went into the pre-district games a several point under- dog and came out winners statistically, but the score showed from one to seven points the other way. Before district play began the boys became a closely-knit cluster of stalwart souls whose loyalty and devotion to a good cause carried them along the high road of accomplishment to the District 29 AA Championship. The Hounds went on to enter the Regional Play-offs against Mercedes. Although they were defeated, they gained valuable experience. The 1957 band was the only Sweepstakes winner in its class in U. I.L. competition, and the 1958 band is well on its way to duplicating the feat, having won 1st division in Marching competition last December. The band is particularly proud of its new uniforms that were purchased this year by the school board and band boosters. Everyone agrees that they add appreciably to the appearance of the band on the marching field and the concert stage. The highlights of the fall semester was the band's trip to Fort Worth, Texas to see the T, C. U. vs Rice football game and participate in the T.C. U. Homecoming celebration. Although the weather was a bit cold for marching, everyone had a marvelous time, and some students were able to get their first glimpse of snow. The activities of the band include participating at all football games, entering all U. I.L. music contests, and contribudon to the over-all development of school spirit. It shall be the aim of the Taft Band to bring the best in band music to the community of Taft.
