The 1971-72 season started out as a rebuilding year for the young Tigers with only two lettermen returning from the previous years' Coast League Champions. The team matured rapidly, winning 7 and losing 3 in the non-league schedule, including the consolation championship game at the Cascade Tournament. The Tigers then moved to league play again finishing in a tie with Reedsport, both teams with a 9 and 3 record. In the district championship game at Siuslaw the Tigers were defeated by the Reedsport Braves. This sent the Tigers to the State Tournament as the number two team in the district. This was the second year in a row the Tigers had gone to the Tournament held in Eugene. Leading the team was senior Harold Browning with first-team All-State, the first time for a Taft player. He also received first team A11-Coast and was chosen as Most Valuable Player. Dave Hopkins received Honorable Mention All-State and first team All-Coast.
