KEY CLUB Community interest has been a virtue since the time of the Greeks. Part of our citizenship learning is the awareness of the world about us, the pride in willing service to others and the sense of achievement acquired in proiects for self-betterment. lt is not surprising to find in Syosset High School many service organizations, serving the community, the school and the home. One of them is the Community Committee, an active, powerful and efficient group which successfully conducted charity drives for the Save the Children Federation, also helped to collect money for the Scholarship Fund and provided a family in Syosset with a Christmas filled with the spirit of giving. The other organization, well-run and bujlt of hard- working members, is the Key Club. This year they received their charter, making them an official arm of the Syosset Kiwanis Club. The club is sincerely interested in town affairs and has made many behind-the-scene contributions toward its well-being. COMMUNITY COMMITTEE 85

Thalian Chapter of the National Honor Society The obiect of the chapter of the National Honor Society is to stimulate scholarship, service, leadership and character. Accordingly, the Thalian Chapter of the N.H.S. of Syosset High School demanded these same qualities of prospective members. In February, I958, the Thalian Chapter of the N.H.S. was established with the initiation of twenty-six of our best students. In October, 1958, the membership was, increased to seventy-three. The Service Corps, a vital asset to the school's operation, worked in cooperation with the faculty and the student body to render service to the school and the community. 84 SERVICE CORPS Tried walking down the hall without a pass lately?

CIVIL DEFENSE JUNIOR RED CROSS 'E WS if-me 1 s i if A , ar' f..l'lYflf C i iv' clvli DEFENSE COMMITTEE ln time of national disaster, of floods, hurricanes or war it is always the civil populace that has the responsi- bility, the will and the strength to rebuild. lt is also public duty to house the homeless, to feed the starving, to attend the maimed and to protect themselves against national or international calamities. Civil Defense has become important because of the terrors of war, the ravages of recent floods and the rapid growth of population and the large scale problems this growth entails. The Civil Defense Committee, aware not only of possible war damage but of these other disasters, would have been able to react efficiently by assigning wardens and nurses to stricken areas. Among the many units coordinate with Civil Defense is Red Cross whose helping hand stretches nationally and internationally. The tremendous amount of money needed to support this organization has been collected in part through the eltorts of the many tireless workers of Syosset High School's Junior Red Cross.
